The transition I warned about earlier this week is officially underway. As temperatures climb across the UK, the massive snowpack from the recent cold snap is liquefying. When you combine that rapid melt with fresh rainfall on already saturated ground, you get a recipe for the widespread hydrological pressure we are seeing tonight.
As of late Sunday evening, the Environment Agency has activated over 85 Flood Alerts and 4 severe Flood Warnings, signaling that for many areas, flooding is no longer a possibility—it is expected.
The “January Thaw” in Numbers
The sheer volume of water entering the river systems is staggering. Current high-priority zones include:
- River Severn & River Teme: Warnings are live for Severn Ham, Tewkesbury and Stanford Bridge. These are critical catchments that react slowly but powerfully to upstream melt.
- The Midlands: Areas like Halesowen (Illey Brook) are already seeing localized flooding.
- Widespread Alerts: From the Lower Derwent in Derbyshire to the River Ouse in Cambridgeshire, over 80 regions are currently under watch as water levels continue to overtop banks.
Why This Thaw is Different
Usually, a thaw is a welcome relief from the ice. But for the UK’s current infrastructure, this is a “compound event.” The ground is currently like a soaked sponge; it cannot absorb another drop. Every liter of melted snow is heading straight into the drains and river networks.
If you live near a watercourse, the “wait and see” window has closed. It is time to move to your active flood plan.
Immediate Action Checklist (High Alert)
If you are in an alert or warning zone, do these three things in the next hour:
- Deploy your ‘Blackout Box’: Flooding often takes out local substations. Ensure your emergency lighting (torches/lanterns) and power banks are at the top of your kit. (See our Blackout Box Guide if you’re missing items).
- The “Upstairs” Rule: Move sentimental items, small electronics, and important insurance documents to the first floor.
- Vehicle Security: If you are in a low-lying area, move your car to higher ground now. More cars are lost to “unexpected” flash flooding during thaws than during heavy rain alone.

With weather events like this, the situation changes every 30 minutes. We have seen how social media algorithms can “bury” urgent local alerts.
To ensure you get our direct updates and resilience guides without relying on a feed, join our private broadcast channels. We’ve set these up specifically for events like tonight:

The bottom line: We predicted this thaw, and now it’s here. Stay dry, stay high, and keep your comms lines open. 🛡️
