From Flash Freeze to Flood: Your Guide to the Great Thaw

Storm Goretti isn’t finished with us yet. As the record-breaking -12°C temperatures begin to rise, the 65,000 homes that lost power are facing a new crisis: The Great Thaw.

When feet of snow and ice melt rapidly, the water has nowhere to go but down—and if your home isn’t ready, it’s coming inside. Here is your emergency checklist for dealing with melt-water and the “silent killer” of UK homes: frozen pipes.

🌊 Phase 1: The Melt-Water Maneuver

Snow looks pretty until it turns into thousands of gallons of water sitting against your brickwork.

1. Clear the Drains

Take a shovel and clear a path for water to reach your external drains and grates. If they are blocked by ice or compacted snow, the water will pool against your house, leading to rising damp or cellar flooding.

2. Monitor the Alerts

Melt-water happens fast. Keep the Environment Agency Flood Map open. Amber alerts for wind are over; now we watch the river levels.

3. The “Insurance First” Rule

If you see water starting to pool near your doors: Take “Before” Photos immediately. Insurance companies are notorious for disputing flood claims. High-quality photos of the snow levels and the initial water ingress are your best weapon for a successful claim.

4. Protect the “Unreplaceables”

Move your “Grab Bag” of vital documents to the highest point in the house. This includes:

  • Birth certificates and Passports.
  • Insurance policies.
  • Physical photo albums.
  • Hard drives/Backups.

❄️ Phase 2: The Pipe Crisis (Find Your Stopcock NOW)

As ice forms inside pipes, it expands. If a pipe cracked during the freeze, you won’t know until the ice melts and the water starts flowing again.

🔍 Where is your Stopcock?

If you don’t know where your internal stopcock is, find it now. It’s usually under the kitchen sink, in a hallway cupboard, or under the stairs.

🛠️ The “Function Test” (Do this today)

  1. Turn it off: Rotate it clockwise.
  2. Check the tap: Turn on your kitchen cold tap. If the water stops after a few seconds, it works.
  3. Turn it back on: Rotate anti-clockwise.
  4. WARNING: If the valve is stiff, do not force it. You risk snapping the head off and causing an instant flood. If it won’t move, call a plumber immediately to have it serviced or replaced.

🔎 What does a frozen pipe look like?

Look for pipes that appear “frosted,” have a visible bulge, or feel ice-cold to the touch. If a tap isn’t working, the blockage is likely in an uninsulated stretch of pipe (loft, crawlspace, or north-facing wall).
