Storm Goretti Survival Guide: How to Prepare for the Amber Alerts

The Met Office has officially upgraded warnings for Storm Goretti. We are now facing a “multi-hazard event” with Amber Warnings issued for both extreme wind and heavy snow.

This isn’t about panic; it’s about practical steps you can take in the next few hours to ensure your household is resilient, warm, and safe.

🚨 The Critical Warnings (Thursday 8 Jan)

  • Amber Snow Warning (Wales & Midlands): Valid 8pm Thu – 9am Fri. Expect 10–15cm of snow widely, with up to 30cm (1 foot) on higher ground. Rural communities are at high risk of being cut off.
  • Amber Wind Warning (Cornwall & Scilly): Valid 5pm – 11pm Thu. Gusts of 80–90mph are possible. There is a legitimate “Danger to Life” from flying debris and large waves.
  • Yellow Warnings: Cover almost the rest of England and Wales for snow, ice, and rain.

⚡ Power & Heating: Your Top Priority

With 80mph winds in the South and heavy, wet snow in the Midlands, the risk to overhead power lines is significant.

  • Charge Everything NOW: Don’t wait until tomorrow morning. Charge power banks, torches, and Kindles today.
  • The “One Room” Strategy: If the power goes out, pick one room to keep warm. Close all other doors, hang blankets over curtains, and keep everyone (including pets) in that single space to preserve body heat.
  • Boil the Kettle: If you see the lights flicker, fill your largest Thermos with boiling water. You’ll want a hot drink or a “Pot Noodle” style meal if the cooker goes dead.

🚗 Travel & Vehicle Prep

The advice from the RAC and Police is clear: Avoid travel in Amber zones.

  • The 5pm Deadline: Aim to be home by 5pm on Thursday. Conditions will deteriorate rapidly after sunset as rain turns to heavy snow.
  • Clear the Roof: If you must drive Friday morning, clear all snow from the roof of your car. If it slides forward under braking, it will blind you; if it flies backward, it’s a hazard to others.
  • Winter Kit: If you are heading out, ensure you have a shovel, a spare coat, and a physical map. Don’t rely on phone GPS in a storm where masts might lose power.

🏠 Immediate Home Actions

  • Secure the Garden: 80mph winds will turn a trampoline or a plastic garden chair into a missile. Move them into a garage or strap them down tonight.
  • Check Your Stopcock: Frozen pipes are a major risk during the “thaw” after this storm. Make sure you know exactly where your internal stopcock is so you can turn the water off fast if a pipe bursts.
  • Vulnerable Neighbours: Take 2 minutes to knock on a neighbour’s door. Ensure they have enough milk, bread, and their heart/blood pressure medication to last until Saturday.

📌 Storm Goretti: 24-Hour Checklist

☑️ Water: Fill a few 2L bottles with tap water in case of local pipe bursts.

☑️ Cash: Keep £20–£40 in cash. If local shops lose power, card machines won’t work.

☑️ Food: Ensure you have “no-cook” food (tuna, crackers, peanut butter) for 48 hours.

☑️ Light: Place torches in easy-to-reach spots (don’t rely on phone lights).

🧠 Prepper Tip of the Day: The “Cold Sink”

If you are worried about your fridge/freezer during a power cut, do not open the door. A full freezer will keep food frozen for 48 hours if left shut. If you have space today, fill empty plastic bottles with water and freeze them—they act as “ice bricks” to keep the temperature down if the power fails.
