Daily UK Prepper News — 9 September 2026

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Air traffic control chaos has run into a second day, with NATS cancelling more flights this morning and the transport secretary demanding answers from its chief executive after ruling out a cyber attack. Mortgage rates have risen at most major UK lenders this week after long-term government borrowing costs hit their highest level since 1998, adding hundreds of pounds a year to typical new deals. If you’re flying from a UK airport in the next few days, check your flight status directly with your airline before you travel.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

No Met Office weather warnings — yellow, amber or red — are currently active anywhere in the UK, and none are forecast over the coming week according to the Met Office.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

No FSA or MHRA product recalls fall within today’s two-day reporting window. No new food safety or medicine recalls have been issued in the last 48 hours.

England — Routine Infection Surveillance Data Published

Status: Monitoring. The UK Health Security Agency has published its routine monthly data on MRSA, MSSA, Gram-negative bacteraemia and C. difficile infections by NHS trust — a standing surveillance release with no new outbreak or operational change for households to act on.

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts

Status: Monitoring. No large-scale cyberattack on UK national infrastructure or services was confirmed in the last 24 hours. Routine phishing and credential-theft campaigns targeting Microsoft 365 accounts continue to be reported by security researchers — a near-daily pattern rather than a new incident — and NCSC’s reports and advisories page carries no elevated threat-level change today. As always: be wary of unexpected emails asking you to “verify” a Microsoft or banking login.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

UK-Wide — Air Traffic Control Fault Disrupts Flights for a Second Day

Status: Ongoing. Nearly 2,000 flights were cancelled on Tuesday after a technical fault hit NATS, the UK’s air traffic control provider, with a further 153 flights axed today according to aviation analytics firm Cirium. Tens of thousands of passengers have been affected, with queues building again this morning at Heathrow and other major airports. NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe has apologised and admitted the fix took “longer than hoped”; he has been summoned to a meeting with the transport secretary today, who is expected to confirm a cyber attack was “categorically” not the cause. If you’re due to fly from a UK airport in the next few days, check your flight status directly with your airline rather than travelling on the assumption it’s running as booked, and keep chargers and snacks to hand in case of a longer-than-expected wait at the terminal.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Status: Monitoring. No grid warnings, planned outages, or infrastructure issues with a wider household impact have been confirmed today.

💧 Water & Utilities

Status: Ongoing. Hosepipe bans remain in force across affected parts of England and Wales following this summer’s drought, with no new bans lifted or imposed confirmed today. For what’s still allowed and what isn’t under a Temporary Use Ban, see our Hosepipe Ban Exemptions guide below.

🏦 Banking, Finance & Cost of Living

UK-Wide — Mortgage Rates Rise as Government Borrowing Costs Hit 28-Year High

Status: Confirmed. Nearly all major UK mortgage lenders have raised the cost of home loans in the last few days, according to the BBC, after a fresh sale of 30-year UK government debt this week priced at a yield of 5.82% — the highest since 1998. Someone borrowing £250,000 on a typical two-year deal is now paying around £120 a month more than they would have done back in March, and someone remortgaging a five-year deal could face over £5,000 a year more under current rates. Analysts say it’s unclear whether more rises are coming, driven partly by global uncertainty linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict — see our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker — and brokers are urging anyone whose fixed deal ends within the next six months to seek advice and lock in a new rate now rather than waiting.

🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity

Geomagnetic Storm — G2 (Moderate) Predicted Today

Status: Developing. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts a G2 (moderate) geomagnetic storm for today, following a G1 (minor) storm yesterday, with conditions expected to ease back below G1 by tomorrow. At G2, minor fluctuations to power grid voltage are possible and aurora may become visible from northern Scotland on a clear night — HF radio and GPS users in northern areas may notice brief disruption. No household action is needed.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

England — Bluetongue Virus: No Change to Restriction Zones

Status: Monitoring. APHA confirms no new restriction zones or case confirmations today — the current risk level and vaccination guidance remain unchanged from recent days.

Great Britain — Avian Influenza: Ongoing Wild Bird Surveillance

Status: Monitoring. APHA‘s routine wild bird surveillance shows no new development requiring a change to current guidance for poultry keepers.

🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports

Status: Monitoring. No significant disruption at Dover, Felixstowe or other major UK ports has been confirmed today, and no strike action or customs system issue is currently affecting household food, fuel or goods supply.

🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards

Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire — Warehouse Fire Involving Dangerous Chemicals

Status: Ongoing. Crews are continuing to damp down a fire at a warehouse on a former airfield in Dalby Road, Melton Mowbray, which broke out on Monday night, according to the BBC. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service says the two-storey building was known to contain a large quantity of combustible liquids and other potentially dangerous chemicals; ten fire appliances plus aerial ladder platforms were sent at the height of the blaze, and nearby residents were told to keep windows and doors closed because of smoke. It’s a reminder of how quickly an industrial fire near homes can escalate — if you’re ever advised to close windows and doors because of smoke or fumes, do it immediately rather than waiting to see how bad it gets.

Cambridgeshire — Holme Fen Peat Fire Stood Down After 31 Days

Status: Confirmed. Firefighters have confirmed they are ready to withdraw from Holme Fen nature reserve near Peterborough, according to the BBC, after tackling a peatland fire that started on 8 August and burnt roughly half the reserve. At its peak more than 100 firefighters were deployed, described by Cambridgeshire’s assistant chief fire officer as “the biggest incident the county had faced in many years.” Peat fires can smoulder and spread underground for weeks with little visible smoke, which is part of why this one took so long to bring fully under control.

Harpurhey, Manchester — Man Critical After Suspected Gas Explosion

Status: Confirmed. A man remains in a critical condition after a suspected gas explosion at a house on Ash Road, Harpurhey, yesterday morning, according to local reports. Nearby residents were evacuated and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service put a cordon in place, with Rochdale Road partly closed. If you ever smell gas in or near your home, get everyone outside, avoid switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999 — don’t wait to see if the smell clears on its own.
