England — Amber Heat Health Alert Expanded

Status: Confirmed. The UK Health Security Agency expanded its amber heat health alert on Thursday to cover every region of England except the north-east, meaning significant impacts on health and social care services are likely. Temperatures surpassed 35°C in Surrey on Thursday — the eighth day this year above 34°C, breaking the previous annual record set in 2020 and 1976. The Guardian reports the Met Office expects high temperatures to persist through much of next week, which could make this one of the longest-lasting heatwaves since 1976 — when prolonged heat killed 250 people.

MHRA Recall — Phenoxymethylpenicillin Oral Solution Mislabelled

Status: Confirmed. Bristol Laboratories has recalled batch 7124002 of Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg/5ml Sugar Free Oral Solution after some bottles inside correctly-labelled cartons were found carrying a 125mg/5ml label instead — a mismatch that could lead to a child receiving the wrong dose of this common childhood antibiotic. The MHRA has told pharmacists to quarantine remaining stock and contact patients dispensed the batch, prioritising anyone dispensed it in the last week. If you’ve already used the medicine there’s no need to take action unless side effects are experienced — but check the label on the bottle matches the dispensing label, and contact your pharmacy if it doesn’t.
