📰 Quick News Brief

England’s drought is still deepening as autumn arrives, with reservoirs at just 55% full and the south-east recording its driest July-to-September on record, so water saving at home matters now, not just in summer. Women who rely on HRT patches face wider shortages, with Estradot now affected alongside FemSeven Conti, and pharmacists are urging anyone struggling to get their usual brand to speak to their GP or chemist rather than self-medicate.
🔝 Leading Story
Southern England and Wales — Drought Deepens as England’s Reservoirs Fall to 55%
Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (14 October), water firms in the south are asking for powers to restrict business water use. New Environment Agency figures now show how deep the problem runs, reports Water Magazine. England had just 65% of its normal September rainfall, and reservoir storage stood at 55% at the end of the month, 19% below normal for the time of year and lower than this point in 2025. Three-quarters of reservoirs are notably or exceptionally low.
July to September was the driest on record for the south-east, Hertfordshire and North London, and the Thames area. All 16 groundwater monitoring sites in the south-east recorded falling levels. Groundwater at Carisbrooke Castle on the Isle of Wight was the lowest for September since 1989, and at Chipstead in the North Downs the lowest since 2006. The Thames at Farmoor and the Arun at Alfoldean had their third-lowest September flows on record.
In Wales, Natural Resources Wales says south-east Wales and the north and upper Severn catchments remain in drought, with south-west Wales still recovering. Soil in the south-east is so dry that autumn rain is soaking in rather than refilling rivers and aquifers.
Household impact: with groundwater still falling going into winter, restrictions in the south and south-east could run well into next year. Using water carefully now and keeping a stored supply at home is sensible, especially in Sussex, Kent, Hampshire, Surrey and the Isle of Wight.

💰 Scams
UK-Wide — Fake Job Texts Target Young Adults
Status: Confirmed. Nearly half (47%) of 18 to 24-year-olds have received a message offering a job they never applied for, according to research by Virgin Media O2, reports WalesOnline. Some texts promise hundreds of pounds for an hour’s work a day, but others look like an ordinary message from a recruitment agency. Victims are tricked into paying a “fee”, sending money or clicking links. Half of the young adults surveyed said they worry about missing a real opportunity if they ignore these messages.
Household impact: if anyone in your family is job hunting, tell them never to pay to get a job and to check any unexpected offer by contacting the company directly, using contact details they’ve found themselves.
📻 Emergency Alerts & Communications Infrastructure
Great Broughton, North Yorkshire — Five Weeks Without Broadband Cut Off Elderly Residents’ Personal Alarms
Status: Ongoing. Seven homes on Lowcross Drive, Great Broughton, have had no broadband since 4 September, leaving some elderly residents unable to use internet-linked personal alarms, reports the Northern Echo. Many neighbours are in their 80s, four of the seven have alarm pendants, and one resident has fallen since the outage. Openreach says a third party damaged its cable while trying to unblock a duct. It expects a permanent repair within days. Provider Quickline has fitted free temporary connections to five of the homes, which restored their alarms.
Household impact: as landlines move to digital, more care alarms depend on broadband and mains power. If you or a relative use one, ask the provider what happens during an outage, and keep a charged mobile phone within reach as a backup.

Catterick Garrison and Chesterfield — Army Chef Jailed for Making Explosives and a “Homemade Cannon”
Status: Confirmed. British Army chef Mark Broadhurst, 28, has been jailed for almost four years after police found explosive substances and weapons at his Chesterfield home and gunpowder and a crude homemade cannon in his barracks at Catterick Garrison, reports the Manchester Evening News. Sheffield Crown Court heard he shared extreme right-wing messages online, talked about raising a militia and said he wanted to be “in history books” for terrorism. Counter Terrorism Policing became aware of him while investigating other members of extremist groups.
Household impact: the case is a reminder that the public’s reports matter. If you see something online or in your community that worries you, report it to the police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
London Paddington, Slough and the Thames Valley — No Trains Into Paddington Over Christmas
Status: Confirmed. Network Rail is starting a £27.8 million upgrade of Dolphin Junction near Slough, one of the busiest sections of the Great Western Main Line, reports the Reading Chronicle. Lines to and from Paddington will close on 28 and 29 November, then again from Christmas Day to 3 January. Great Western Railway trains will start and end at Reading or run via London Euston, with Waterloo and Marylebone as alternatives. Normal GWR services to Paddington are due back on 4 January, with the Elizabeth line and Heathrow Express returning from New Year’s Eve.
Household impact: if you’re travelling to or from the West Country, South Wales or the Thames Valley over Christmas, plan your route and book early, because diverted trains will be busier than usual.
🧑⚕️ Health & NHS Updates
UK-Wide — HRT Shortage Widens to Estradot Patches
Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (14 October), FemSeven Conti patches are out of stock until late November. The Department of Health has now confirmed that Estradot patches are also affected by manufacturing or distribution delays, reports BBC News. Women are being warned not to self-medicate. Belfast pharmacist Paul Irvine said switching brands can bring side effects or work less well, so advice matters. The Royal College of GPs in Northern Ireland said pharmacists can only substitute the exact same active ingredient at the same dose.
Household impact: if you use either patch, order your repeat prescription early and talk to your pharmacist or GP before you run out. If a substitute doesn’t suit you, go back to your GP rather than trying something else on your own.
Kenya — Second Ebola Case Confirmed as Outbreak Spreads Beyond Congo
Status: Developing. Kenya has confirmed a second Ebola case, a close relative of a businessman who died on 5 October after travelling from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda without being detected, reports BBC News. The new patient was already in quarantine. Kenya says there is no evidence of wider spread, and 108 contacts are in quarantine while 15 more are still being traced. The outbreak in Congo, which began in May, has killed more than 4,000 people this year. It’s caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which there is no approved vaccine or treatment.
Household impact: the first patient passed through airport screening undetected, which shows the limits of temperature checks. If you’ve been in Central or East Africa and feel unwell with a fever, phone NHS 111 and mention your travel before going to a GP surgery or A&E.
🏭 Industrial Hazards
Ilkeston, Derbyshire — Large Timber Fire Closes Hallam Fields Road
Status: Ongoing. Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service spent all of Wednesday tackling a fire in a large pile of timber at the Donaldson Timber site on Hallam Fields Road, reports Rayo. The fire was reported at 1.44am. Three fire engines and an aerial ladder platform were sent. Part of the road is closed, and nearby residents have been told to keep windows and doors shut because of the smoke. No injuries have been reported.
Household impact: if you live near a fire and are told to keep windows shut, also turn off extractor fans and any ventilation that draws air in from outside.
Anderston, Glasgow — Car Fire in Underground Garage Next to Petrol Station Forces Residents Out
Status: Confirmed. A car caught fire in an underground garage off Ashley Lane, beside the Sainsbury’s petrol station on Woodlands Road, on Wednesday evening, reports the Glasgow Times. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service sent six appliances, a high-reach appliance and a specialist appliance. Nearby residents were reportedly evacuated while crews worked, according to the Daily Record. Woodlands Road was closed between Charing Cross and Arlington Street and reopened at about 10.30pm.
Household impact: a fire under a building can force you out with no warning. Keep keys, phone, medication and a coat where you can grab them on the way out at night.
Brislington, Bristol — Firewater From Industrial Fire Confirmed in Brook Where Eels Died
Status: Confirmed. The Environment Agency has confirmed that chemicals from firewater runoff entered Brislington Brook after a fire at a nearby industrial estate on 1 September, reports BBC News. About 50 critically endangered European eels and other fish were later found dead downstream. The agency said the deaths may have come from several chemicals acting together. Chemicals had been stored in a disused factory unit. Avon Fire and Rescue Service says it blocked drains and contained runoff where it could, and used no firefighting foam.
Household impact: water used to put out an industrial fire can carry chemicals well beyond the site. If you live downstream of an incident, keep children and pets out of the water until the Environment Agency gives the all-clear.

England, Scotland and Wales — Peanut Butter Bar Recall Extended to Sainsbury’s Stores in Wales
Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (14 October), Halo Foods is recalling Skinny Crunch Light Peanut Butter Bars that were packed in Skinny Whip Toffee bar wrappers, which don’t list peanuts. An update from the Food Standards Agency adds selected Sainsbury’s stores in Wales to the shops affected, alongside Sainsbury’s in England and Asda in England and Scotland. The affected batch is 5 x 20g packs, batch code 6238 (08:30 – 10:30), best before August 2027. Anyone with a peanut allergy should not eat them and should return them for a full refund.

England and Wales — Water Bills Set to Fall for Yorkshire and Thames Customers but Rise for Others
Status: Developing. Ofwat’s draft figures say water companies that missed performance targets in 2025-26 must return money through lower bills, reports The Guardian. Yorkshire Water customers could see an average £27 off and Thames Water customers £7. Dŵr Cymru (Welsh Water), South West Water and United Utilities must also pay back. Companies that met their targets get a reward paid for by customers. Northumbrian Water bills could rise by an average of £21 and Severn Trent by £8. Ofwat decides by 15 December, and changes apply from 1 April 2027.
Household impact: any change is small and over a year away, while bills are already rising to pay for new pipes and reservoirs. If you’re struggling, ask your water company about its social tariff.
UK-Wide — Households Paid an Extra £13,961 on Bills Since 2021
Status: Confirmed. The average UK household has paid an extra £13,961 on mortgages, loans, energy and water bills since 2021, about £2,792 a year, according to the Trades Union Congress, reports The Guardian. The report comes as typical energy bills are predicted to reach £2,000 a year from January, with the Budget due on 28 October.
Household impact: if energy bills do rise in January, fixed costs will bite hardest in the coldest months. Building a small buffer of food, fuel and savings now spreads the cost before winter.
🏦 Banking & Finance
UK-Wide — Economy Unexpectedly Grows 0.1% in August
Status: Confirmed. The UK economy grew by 0.1% in August, beating City forecasts of a 0.1% fall, according to Office for National Statistics figures reported by The Guardian. Growth was 0.4% in July, and consumer spending fell in August as energy costs rose. Government borrowing costs have risen sharply ahead of the 28 October Budget.
Household impact: little changes day to day, but higher borrowing costs feed into mortgage and loan rates, so check when any fixed deal ends.

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day
Groundwater in the south-east is still falling, so start your water store now. Rinse out a few clean plastic bottles, fill them from the tap, label them with the date and keep them somewhere cool and dark. Two litres per person per day for drinking is a good starting point. Swap them for fresh tap water every six months.
