Coventry — Hospital Trust Declares Critical Incident

Status: Confirmed. University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW), which runs University Hospital Coventry, declared a critical incident on Wednesday due to “severe and sustained pressure” on emergency services and limited bed capacity, with wait times running well beyond six hours. Chief Nursing Officer Tracey Brigstock asked anyone in the area to use the emergency department only for life-threatening situations, and to use NHS 111, a GP, or an urgent treatment centre for anything else.

England — Pharmacies to Treat Five More Conditions From Autumn

Status: Confirmed. NHS England has confirmed that hundreds of pharmacies will be able to treat migraines, acne and three other everyday conditions from this autumn, without a GP referral first — bringing the total number of conditions pharmacies can treat to 12. It’s a genuine option worth remembering next time A&E or your GP has a long wait, like Coventry above.

UK Airports — Nats Failure Ruled “Avoidable”, Independent Probe Ordered

As reported yesterday (9 September), a technical fault at Nats’ Swanwick control centre has now cancelled more than 2,000 flights and disrupted an estimated 330,000 passengers over three days, with knock-on delays continuing into today at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told the Commons the failure was “not unavoidable” and has ordered an independent review by the Civil Aviation Authority, alongside Nats’ own internal report due within a week. It’s the third major Nats system failure in three years. The CAA says the disruption is likely to count as “extraordinary circumstances”, meaning most passengers won’t be entitled to compensation for delays or cancellations — only the legal duty of care (meals, hotels, rebooking) applies. UK — Petrol Up 5p a Litre in a Week as Oil Nears $100 a Barrel

Status: Confirmed. As previously covered (7 September), fuel prices are continuing to climb. The RAC says the average price of unleaded has risen 5p a litre in the past week alone — the steepest weekly jump since April — to 167.17p, with diesel up the same amount to 188.63p. Brent crude has returned to $100 a barrel for the first time since July after US forces struck Iranian tankers and Houthi forces attacked Saudi oil facilities this week. Scotland — CalMac Ferry Vented 700kg of Flammable Gas Mid-Crossing

Status: Confirmed. It emerged this week that the CalMac ferry Glen Sannox vented around 700kg of methane over 12 minutes during a crossing to Arran with 82 passengers aboard, automatically shutting down its main engine mid-journey. The incident happened in June 2025 but was only disclosed publicly this week, when Transport Secretary Stephen Flynn told a Holyrood committee he hadn’t been briefed on it. CalMac says the vessel remains safe to operate and that “lessons were learned” and remedial action taken, but it’s a reminder that even routine ferry crossings carry hazards worth being aware of if you travel by sea, especially to island communities with no alternative route home.
