Whelford, Gloucestershire — Iran Link Probed After Suspected Bomb Plot Near RAF Fairford

Status: Developing. Five men have been arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act after three vans were found near RAF Fairford, the base US bombers have used for strikes on Iran. Counter-terrorism police are now examining whether Iran was behind it, the Guardian reports. Its understanding is that material found in the vans was initially judged consistent with improvised explosive devices. Tests are ongoing to see whether the devices were viable. Police say nothing is being ruled out.

The plot appears to have been stopped by chance. A local resident driving home just after midnight on Sunday saw three white vans and a group of hooded, masked men on a country lane. She called 999, and armed police arrived within minutes. She told the BBC she had first tried the base’s own police line and got no answer.

For the people of Whelford, the night was a real evacuation. Eighty-five households were woken by police and told to leave straight away. Many arrived at the leisure centre in Cirencester still in their pyjamas. They were told they could not return on Sunday night, and Cotswold District Council arranged overnight rooms for anyone with nowhere to stay. A 400m cordon remains around the vans, and police say a large presence will stay in the area for the next few days.

North Yorkshire, Northumberland & Somerset Coasts — High Tides Bring Coastal Flood Alerts

Status: Confirmed. The Environment Agency issued coastal flood alerts over the weekend as high tides, strong winds and big waves hit several stretches of coast. The alert for the North Sea coast from Staithes to Whitby, including the tidal River Esk and Sandsend, warned of flooding on coastal roads and footpaths from 3:30am to 7am this morning. Alerts were also in force along the Northumberland coast, at Withernsea, Easington and Kilnsea, at Shoreham Harbour, on the north Morecambe Bay coast and at Porlock Weir in Somerset.

There are no Met Office weather warnings in force this week. The BBC Weather forecast has fog patches for this morning’s commute and a warm Tuesday, with highs of 20C to 26C in England and Wales. Rain then moves in from the west on Tuesday afternoon, with strong winds and gales on exposed coasts and hills, reaching the east on Wednesday. The drought-hit parts of central, southern and eastern England may get far less rain than the west.

If you walk or drive coastal roads at high tide, check the flood alert map first. Spray and waves can come over sea walls with little warning.

Macclesfield & Cheshire — Five Courier Scams in Eight Days Target Elderly Residents

Status: Confirmed. Cheshire Police have warned of five attempted courier frauds in eight days this month, all targeting elderly people, the Manchester Evening News reports. In one case in Macclesfield, a man posing as a Greater Manchester Police officer told a pensioner that staff at her bank were suspected of fraud and that her cards were needed for the investigation. A “courier” then came to her home and collected two debit cards and a credit card. She became suspicious and her bank cancelled them before they could be used.

The callers pretended to be police from GMP and Coventry, and staff from Lloyds and NatWest. Police believe they are all part of the same organised gang. No police force or bank will ever send someone to collect your cards, PIN or cash. If you get a call like this, hang up and ring your bank on the number on the back of your card, using a different phone if you can.

Westham, Weymouth — Underground Fault Cuts Power to 511 Properties

Status: Confirmed. A fault on SSEN’s underground network cut power to 511 homes and businesses in the Westham area of Weymouth early on Sunday, the Dorset Echo reports. Streets affected included Chickerell Road, Abbotsbury Road, Knightsdale Road, Dennis Road, Quibo Lane, Shirecroft Road and Southview Road. SSEN aimed to restore supplies by lunchtime. Faults like this come without warning, so a working torch and a charged power bank are worth keeping where you can find them.

Crawley, West Sussex — Burst Main Leaves About 9,000 Homes Without Water

Status: Ongoing. A burst water main in the early hours of Sunday flooded roads around the Southgate roundabout in Crawley and left about 9,000 Southern Water customers with no water or low pressure, the BBC reports. Woolborough Road, Holmcroft, Southgate, Tilgate and Furnace Green were affected. Southgate Avenue, Crawley Avenue and part of the A23 were closed, underpasses flooded, and the County Mall shopping centre shut for the day.

By Sunday evening most supplies were back, and the damaged pipe had been replaced. Southern Water opened a bottled water station at The Hawth theatre and delivered water to customers on its Priority Services Register. One 82-year-old resident said he had paid £22 for bottled water in a shop. When supplies return, water may be cloudy or discoloured. Run the tap until it clears, and try again after 20 minutes if it doesn’t.

A few days of stored drinking water at home means a burst main is an inconvenience, not a scramble to the shops.

Catania, Sicily — Mount Etna Ash Grounds Flights, Including From Manchester

Status: Developing. Catania Airport in Sicily suspended all flights after Mount Etna sent a 4km-high ash cloud into the sky on Saturday, the Manchester Evening News reports. A Manchester flight was cancelled as the disruption ran into a second day, with operations suspended until midnight on Sunday. Anyone flying to or from eastern Sicily this week should check with their airline before setting off for the airport, and keep travel insurance and booking details to hand.

Aberdeen & Elgin — NHS Grampian Declares Critical Incident Over A&E Pressure

Status: Ongoing. NHS Grampian has declared a critical incident because of “extreme pressure” on the A&E units at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin, Herald Scotland reports. The health board blamed today’s local public holiday, a lack of hospital beds and pressure on care in the community. Ambulances may be sent to other areas where necessary. Patients have been warned of longer waits and possibly further travel for care. Families are asked to collect relatives promptly when they are ready to go home, to free up beds. For anything that isn’t an emergency, call NHS 24 on 111 or see a pharmacist first.

Status: Monitoring. A novice metal detectorist on holiday found a possible piece of old ordnance on Caister beach on Saturday afternoon, the BBC reports. HM Coastguard closed the beach, and bomb disposal specialists are deciding whether to detonate it. Old explosives still wash up on UK beaches every year. If you find anything that looks like a shell, mine or bomb, don’t touch or move it. Keep people well back and call 999, asking for the coastguard.

England — Most of Our Staple Crops Are Grown Where Drought Risk Is Highest

Status: Confirmed. Most of England’s staple food crops are grown in areas with a moderate to very high risk of drought, according to an analysis by the investment fund Rebalance Earth reported by the Guardian. That covers 77% of wheat, 75% of barley, 74% of oilseed rape, 70% of sugar beet and 67% of potatoes. About a quarter of staple crops, including 30% of wheat and barley, are grown in areas at acute risk.

This lands in a year when drought has already cut the harvest, and when the driest regions in the east and south are forecast to miss most of this week’s rain. Lower yields mean higher prices in the shops, not empty shelves, but they strengthen the case for a cupboard of long-life basics bought steadily rather than in a rush.

Great Britain — Energy Price Cap Rises on Wednesday, With a Bigger Jump Forecast for January

Status: Confirmed. The energy price cap goes up on Wednesday 1 October, from £1,663 to £1,723 a year for a typical household on a standard variable tariff, the Birmingham Mail reports, citing Uswitch. Uswitch’s own smart meter data shows 1 October is almost exactly when heating use starts to climb. Forecasters expect the January cap to reach around £2,152, about 25% higher again. Submit a meter reading on or just before 1 October, so you aren’t billed at the new rate for energy used before it.

Northern Ireland — Diesel Averages 189.9p as Prices Head Towards £2

Status: Confirmed. As previously covered (26 September), diesel is heading for record highs. In Northern Ireland, the Consumer Council’s latest weekly check puts average diesel at 189.9p a litre, up from 185.6p a week earlier, and petrol at 166.0p, up from 164.1p, Belfast Live reports. Petrol is at its highest since September 2022. The rise is being driven by the Middle East conflict and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Great Britain — Bluetongue Cases Pass 2,000 for the Season

Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (27 September), bluetongue is still spreading. The total has now passed 2,000, with 2,029 confirmed cases in the 2026 to 2027 season, according to APHA and Defra: 1,706 in England, 285 in Wales, 38 in Scotland and none in Northern Ireland. Another 41 cases were confirmed in England on 26 September, in Cornwall, Devon, Lancashire, North Yorkshire and Somerset, mostly in sheep. No cases of the BTV-8 strain have been found this season. Bluetongue doesn’t affect people or food safety. Livestock keepers should report suspected cases to APHA straight away.
