Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Police Scotland has declared a major incident and evacuated the village of Nethy Bridge as the 10-day Cairngorms wildfire changes direction, while a huge fertiliser explosion and fire at an industrial site in Rettendon, Essex, triggered its own major incident and evacuations overnight — early reports suggest no casualties at either scene. A yellow heat-health alert remains in force across much of England until 9am tomorrow, with highs of 30°C still possible in the south before cooler, wetter weather arrives. If you’re near either fire zone keep windows shut and follow local advice, and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours through today’s heat.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

England — Yellow heat-health alert until Sunday morning

Status: Ongoing. A yellow heat-health alert from the UK Health Security Agency remains in force for the East Midlands, East of England, London, the South East, South West and West Midlands until 9am tomorrow, according to the Guardian. Highs of 30°C are possible in the south and centre today before cooler, wetter conditions move in from the north-west this weekend. Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours and avoid strenuous activity between 11am and 3pm.

Scotland — Wildfire smoke advisory for Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen city

Status: Ongoing. A change in wind direction has carried smoke from the Cairngorms wildfire as far as Aberdeen, 59 miles away. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has advised residents and businesses across Aviemore, Inverurie, Banchory, Kintore and Aberdeen city to keep windows and doors closed over the weekend. Full detail on the wildfire itself is in the Industrial & Environmental Hazards section below.

Outlook — Heat set to build again next week

Status: Monitoring. After a cooler, damper weekend for many, the BBC reports temperatures are set to climb again from Tuesday, potentially reaching 30–35°C in parts of England and Wales by next weekend — enough for what could become the UK’s fourth heatwave of the year.

See our Special Report “Heatwave Safety: What to Do When the UK Overheats” first published on 10 July 2026.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

Democratic Republic of Congo — UK healthcare worker medically evacuated as Ebola precaution

Status: Monitoring. The UK government has worked with the NHS and international health partners to medically evacuate a humanitarian worker who had been treating Ebola patients in the DRC, following a potential healthcare-related exposure, according to the UK Health Security Agency. There is no wider risk to the UK public; this is a standard precaution while the individual is assessed.

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts

UK-wide — Hotel Wi-Fi DNS hijack targeting Microsoft 365 logins

Status: Ongoing. Security researchers have identified attackers changing DNS settings on hotel and conference-centre Wi-Fi routers to redirect guests to fake Microsoft 365 login pages, according to BleepingComputer. With peak summer travel under way, anyone connecting to hotel Wi-Fi should avoid entering Microsoft, email or banking passwords on any page that looks slightly different from usual, and use mobile data for anything sensitive.

Global — Microsoft 365 outage resolved, cause confirmed

Status: Confirmed. Microsoft has confirmed Thursday’s widespread Microsoft 365 and Azure outage, which disrupted services for UK businesses and users, was caused by a bug in its automated network maintenance system that removed more IP routes than intended, according to BleepingComputer. Services have been restored; no action is needed from users.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

UK-wide — EU border system delays hit peak getaway weekend

Status: Ongoing. With an estimated 2.2 million Britons travelling abroad between Friday and Monday as the school summer holidays begin, the EU’s new digital entry-exit border system (EES) continues to cause longer processing times at some crossings, according to the Guardian. Travellers heading to the EU by ferry, Eurotunnel or air should build in extra time at the border and check their operator’s status page before setting off.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Status: Confirmed. No active electricity margin notices, capacity warnings, or grid stress alerts have been issued by NESO (National Energy System Operator) for Great Britain today. No household impact from the power grid is expected, though demand may rise again if temperatures climb further into next week.

💧 Water & Utilities

Ditchling and Burgess Hill, East Sussex — Burst mains cut supply to 1,000 properties

Status: Ongoing. South East Water says nearly 1,000 properties in Ditchling and Burgess Hill are without water or on low pressure after two separate burst mains, according to the BBC. Some businesses, including a dental clinic, have had to buy in bottled water to keep operating, and road closures are needed on Queens Crescent and Oldlands Avenue to complete repairs. South East Water is arranging bottled water deliveries for affected customers; anyone on higher ground in the area should expect lower pressure until repairs finish.

England & Wales — Hosepipe bans and drought (standing update)

Status: Ongoing. As previously covered (24 July), a drought remains in force across North Wales and the Upper Severn river basin, with prolonged dry weather status across large parts of England and hosepipe bans now affecting more than 20 million people across eight water company areas. No further companies or regions have joined the restrictions today, according to the BBC.

England — Water company executive pay rises amid hosepipe bans

Status: Confirmed. Water company bosses’ total pay rose over the past year despite a government bonus ban and public anger over bills and pollution, according to the Guardian; Anglian Water’s chief executive received £1.9m including a £500,000 “retention payment”, while United Utilities’ chief executive received £2.5m. This has no direct action for households today, but is useful context if your water company is currently restricting your hosepipe use.

🏦 Banking, Finance & Cost of Living

UK-wide — Mortgage rates stay elevated as Middle East tensions deepen

Status: Ongoing. As previously covered (24 July), average UK mortgage rates have climbed back to a one-month high as renewed Middle East tensions push oil prices above $100 a barrel; the average two-year fixed deal now stands at 5.59%, still below April’s Iran-war peak of 5.9%, according to the BBC. A further escalation overnight — a Houthi blockade claim against Saudi oil exports and expanded US strikes on Iran (see our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker) — makes near-term relief on borrowing costs unlikely. Anyone due to remortgage this year is being advised by brokers to lock in a current deal rather than wait.

🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity

Status: Monitoring. A minor G1 geomagnetic storm remains in an extended warning window from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, with a geomagnetic K-index of 4 possible. This is not expected to cause any grid, GPS or HF radio disruption for UK households, and aurora visibility is unlikely outside far northern Scotland.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

Status: Ongoing. Bluetongue virus (BTV-3) cases in England and Wales have risen to 24 for the 2026–27 season — 21 in England, including Devon, Somerset, Cheshire and Staffordshire, and 3 in Wales, in Newport and Powys — according to APHA. The whole of England remains in a bluetongue restricted zone, and warm weather has reactivated the midges that spread the virus. There is no risk to human health or the general public; the main household-relevant impact is for anyone keeping livestock, who should check current movement and germinal product licensing rules.

🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports

Middle East — Houthi blockade claim against Saudi oil exports

Status: Developing. Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels have claimed a missile attack on the Saudi city of Jizan and declared a maritime blockade of Saudi oil exports, while the US has expanded strikes against Iran and Houthi targets, according to the Guardian. Oil prices topped $100 a barrel this week on the back of the escalation. There is no evidence yet of a direct impact on UK fuel deliveries, but the Red Sea remains a key shipping chokepoint and the situation is being watched for further fuel and freight cost pressure — see our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker.

🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards

Highlands, Scotland — Major incident declared, Nethy Bridge evacuated

Status: Developing. Police Scotland has declared a major incident after a change in wind direction increased the risk of the 10-day Cairngorms wildfire spreading towards the village of Nethy Bridge, according to the BBC. All Nethy Bridge residents have been evacuated as a precaution and directed to a respite centre at the Macdonald Aviemore Hotel, with access roads into the village closed. More than 100 firefighters remain on scene, and smoke from the fire is now visible as far as Aberdeen, 59 miles away.

Rettendon, Essex — Major incident after industrial fire and fertiliser explosion

Status: Ongoing. A major incident was declared after a fire tore through an industrial site near Rettendon, south of Chelmsford, triggering a large explosion when stored fertiliser ignited, according to the BBC. More than 100 firefighters attended at the peak of the incident; Essex County Fire and Rescue Service says there is “no wider risk to the public” and everyone at the scene is safe, though nearby residents were evacuated and advised to keep windows closed as smoke spread. The cause is under investigation.

Peak District, Derbyshire — Tintwistle Moor wildfire enters second month

Status: Ongoing. The Tintwistle Moor wildfire, declared a major incident on 13 July, is continuing more than a month after it began and has now burned an estimated 606 hectares — comparable in scale to the Saddleworth and Fylingdales wildfires of recent years, according to the BBC. Firefighters say the blaze won’t be fully extinguished until significant rain falls.

🔔 Other UK Household Risk Alerts

No genuinely uncategorised household risk stories were identified today outside the sections above.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ If you live near moorland, forest or dry grassland — especially in the Highlands, Peak District or Essex — know your evacuation route and where you’d go at short notice
  • ☑️ Keep a bag with medication, documents, phone charger and a little cash near the door in case you need to leave in a hurry
  • ☑️ Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours today — the heat-health alert runs until 9am tomorrow, with highs of 30°C possible in the south
  • ☑️ If your area smells of smoke (Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen city or Essex), keep windows and doors closed

  • ☑️ Travelling abroad this weekend? Build in extra time at EU borders and check your ferry, Eurotunnel or airline’s status page first

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

If you’ve never actually timed how long it would take your household to grab the essentials and leave, today’s a good day to try it — Nethy Bridge residents in Scotland had to evacuate at short notice this weekend, and a five-minute practice run now beats a panicked scramble later. Keep torches, medication and phone chargers in one place so nobody’s hunting for them in the dark or in smoke.
