Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Drought has now been formally declared in North Wales and the Upper Severn, with more than 20 million people across England and Wales under hosepipe restrictions as July heads for its driest month in nearly 190 years. Multiple wildfires are still burning across Wales, including a 951-hectare blaze in the Rhinogydd mountains and a 220-hectare fire at Blaenavon sending smoke as far as Cardiff and Newport, with residents told to keep windows and doors shut. Middle East tensions are also feeding through to household finances, with oil back above $100 a barrel and UK mortgage rates rising to a one-month high.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

UK-wide — No Active Warnings

Status: Confirmed. The Met Office currently has no yellow, amber or red weather warnings in force anywhere in the UK for the coming week. There is no immediate severe weather risk to households today, though the underlying hot, dry pattern behind this month’s drought and wildfires (see Water & Utilities and Industrial Hazards below) remains in place.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

England — MHRA Medicines Defect Notification: Tuzulby (methylphenidate)

Status: Confirmed (issued 23 July, Day 2 of reporting window). Neuraxpharm UK Ltd has notified the MHRA that certain batches of Tuzulby prolonged-release chewable tablets (20mg, 30mg and 40mg) are missing safety information from the Patient Information Leaflet and Summary of Product Characteristics. Households managing a child or adult on this ADHD medication should check the batch details on the MHRA notice and speak to their pharmacist if unsure.

No Food Standards Agency alerts met today’s reporting window — see our recall-check process for how this is verified daily.

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts

South-West England — Iranian Threat Against UK Base Hosting US Operations

Status: Developing. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has declared any UK base used to support US operations against Iran a “legitimate target”, after confirming a base in south-west England has been used to launch US “defensive” strikes. The Guardian reports the government has said the UK is “ready to defend itself”; the arrangement with the US has not changed under new PM Andy Burnham. There is no evidence of an imminent attack on UK soil, but this is a genuine escalation worth monitoring given ongoing US-Iran strikes — see our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker for the wider picture.

International — Russian State-Backed “LAUNDRY BEAR” Phishing Campaign

Status: Monitoring. The NCSC and international partners have exposed a Russian state-backed group running a “zero-click” email exploit against organisations using Zimbra webmail software, targeting defence, government, energy and media sectors. This is an organisation-level threat rather than a direct household risk, but it’s a reminder that state-linked cyber activity against UK-linked targets remains elevated.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

No significant nationwide transport disruption reported today. A handful of local road closures are under way this week for routine drainage, resurfacing and level-crossing works in Fife, Darlington, Oldham, Sidmouth and Keighley — all below the threshold for wider household impact.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Status: Confirmed. NESO (National Energy System Operator) has no active electricity margin notices, capacity warnings, or grid stress alerts for Great Britain today. No household impact from the power network at this time.

England & Wales — Drought Declared, Hosepipe Bans Now Cover 20m+ People

As reported yesterday (23 July), drought had been looming for days — it is now official. Status: Confirmed. Natural Resources Wales has formally declared drought status in North Wales and the Upper Severn river basin, with rivers including the Clwyd, Wye, Alwen and Conwy at exceptionally low, in some cases record-low, levels for July. The BBC reports eight water companies have now announced hosepipe bans — seven in southern and eastern England, one in Wales — covering more than 20 million people. The rest of Wales and large parts of England (East Anglia, the West Midlands, Devon, Cornwall, Hertfordshire, London and the South Downs among them) are in the milder “prolonged dry weather” category, one step below drought. Households under a ban cannot use a hosepipe for gardens, cars, windows or paddling pools — check with your own supplier for exact rules and exemptions, as they vary company to company.

If you want a simple way to keep drinking water on hand regardless of what your supplier does next, a decent filter bottle means you’re never relying solely on the mains.

🏦 Banking, Finance & Cost of Living

UK-wide — Mortgage Rates Rise as Middle East Tensions Push Oil Past $100

As previously covered (20 July), oil prices have been climbing through the week as the conflict widens. Status: Confirmed. Brent crude broke back above $100 a barrel on Thursday for the first time since May, after Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea reopened fears over a second supply chokepoint alongside the Strait of Hormuz — full detail in our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker. The knock-on effect has reached mortgages: the BBC reports the average two-year fixed rate has risen to 5.58%, back to where it was a month ago, as lenders price in a lower chance of Bank of England rate cuts. More than 100 mortgage deals have been temporarily pulled while lenders reprice. If you’re due to remortgage in the next six months, brokers are advising borrowers to lock in a deal with their existing lender now rather than wait for further falls.

🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity

Status: Monitoring. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has extended a minor (G1) geomagnetic storm watch, with a Kp-index of 5 expected. This is a low-level event — no impact expected on UK power, GPS or communications. Aurora may be faintly visible from far northern Scotland on a clear night, but this is a background item rather than a household concern.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

No significant UK household impacts reported at this time. No new notifiable disease outbreaks, movement restrictions, or zone changes from APHA today.

🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports

No direct disruption reported at UK ports today. The household-relevant impact of the widening Red Sea shipping risk is fuel and energy pricing, covered in Banking, Finance & Cost of Living above rather than repeated here.

🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards

North & South Wales — Multiple Active Wildfires, Smoke Advisories in Force

Status: Ongoing. Wildfires continue to burn across Wales, with Welsh government “crisis management arrangements” still active. The BBC reports an estimated 951 hectares burned at Rhinogydd in Gwynedd (a specialist firefighting helicopter was being deployed there this morning) and 220 hectares at Blaenavon in Torfaen, with smoke reaching as far as Cardiff and Newport. A further fire broke out on Kilvey Hill in Swansea on Thursday night. Residents near any of these sites are advised to keep windows and doors closed, and North Wales Police have warned that entering cordoned-off areas “may constitute a criminal offence.” Officials say there is currently no threat to life or property, but the Blaenavon fire is expected to keep burning for several days.

See our Special Report “UK Wildfire Risk” first published on 30 June 2026.

📻 Emergency Alerts & Communications Infrastructure

No changes to the UK Emergency Alert system, and no major network or broadband outages reported today.

🔔 Other UK Household Risk Alerts

England — National Drowning Prevention Strategy Launched

Status: Confirmed. The government has launched a national strategy to tackle rising open-water drowning deaths, hours after a mother and daughter died trying to help a boy in difficulty at an Essex beach. The Guardian reports measures under consideration include swimming and water safety education for every child in England. Worth a thought if you’re heading to open water with family during the current hot, dry spell.

Quick Risk Summary — Next 48 Hours

  • ☑️ Check whether your water company has a hosepipe ban in place and what it covers
  • ☑️ Fill a few extra containers of drinking water as a simple precaution, even though mains supply isn’t currently at risk
  • ☑️ If you’re near Rhinogydd, Blaenavon, Kilvey Hill or other Welsh wildfire sites, keep windows and doors shut and stay out of cordoned areas
  • ☑️ Check your child or family member’s Tuzulby (methylphenidate) batch against the MHRA notice if they’re on this medication
  • ☑️ If remortgaging in the next six months, get a rate locked in now rather than waiting
  • ☑️ Keep pets and any livestock well hydrated and shaded through the ongoing dry heat

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

With hosepipes off-limits for most of the country, grey water is your friend. Keep a bucket in the shower to catch water while it warms up, and reuse washing-up water on garden beds rather than a watering can straight from the tap — neither counts as a hosepipe and both help stretch supply during a drought.
