A vessel came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz overnight as US strikes on Iran entered a ninth night and Iran vowed to block the route entirely, pushing oil above $90 a barrel and UK fuel prices higher still. Three separate wildfires are also burning across the UK today: the Cairngorms blaze that forced evacuations has been “surrounded”, but Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh and moorland near Manchester are still alight, keeping a major Peak District road shut for a second week. Expect fuel costs to keep climbing, and check for diversions if you’re travelling through the Pennines or near either fire.

England — Yellow Heat-Health Alert (standing notice, issued 13 July)

Norfolk — Tidal Flood Alerts (standing)
Status: Ongoing. Flood alerts remain in place for the tidal Rivers Bure, Ant and Thurne, and the tidal River Yare between Thorpe St Andrew and Breydon Water — the lowest tier of alert, meaning flooding is possible but not currently expected. Environment Agency

Strait of Hormuz — Vessel Attacked, Ninth Night of US Strikes on Iran
Status: Developing. A vessel came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, struck by an unknown projectile roughly 8 nautical miles northwest of Kumzar, Oman. The crew are safe, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre, the British agency that monitors shipping security in the region. It comes as US forces carried out a ninth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, and Iran has vowed that not “a single drop” of oil or gas will pass through the strait — a route that normally carries around a fifth of the world’s oil and gas. Israel has separately warned it will respond with “full force” if hit by Iranian missiles. See our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker for the ongoing effect on UK fuel and energy costs.
Iraq — US Service Member Killed During Drone Disposal
Status: Confirmed. US Central Command has confirmed a US service member was killed in northern Iraq during the “controlled detonation” of a downed Iranian drone, struck by debris from the blast. It follows the deaths of two US troops in a separate Iranian strike on a base in Jordan reported over the weekend. The Guardian
🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
Peak District — A628 Woodhead Pass Closed Over a Week After Moorland Fire
Status: Ongoing. The A628 Woodhead Pass, a key route linking South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester, has been shut since a crashed car burst into flames and ignited a moorland blaze on 16 July. Fire crews used an estimated 250,000 litres of water tackling the blaze, and the closure has since been extended into a second week with no confirmed reopening date — drivers should expect diversions via the A57 or A616. ⚡ Power & Infrastructure
Status: Confirmed. No electricity margin warnings, grid alerts, or capacity market notices are currently active. National Grid ESO
💧 Water & Utilities
Kent — South East Water Supply Resolved After Two-Day Outage
Status: Resolved. South East Water has confirmed supplies have been restored to around 7,000 properties in the Tunbridge Wells area, following an “instrument failure” at a nearby treatment works that left homes with low pressure, intermittent supply, or no water at all since Saturday. Bottled water stations and tankers supported affected residents while storage tanks refilled. Separately, the company has warned of “material uncertainty” over its own financial survival after a loss-making year, and has enough cash to continue only until July 2027. The Guardian
🏦 Banking, Finance & Cost of Living
UK-wide — Fuel Prices Climbing as Oil Passes $90
Status: Developing. Brent crude has risen above $90 a barrel this morning, up from around $87 yesterday, as the conflict between the US and Iran escalates. UK petrol was last confirmed averaging 152.54p a litre and diesel 167p a litre, both up from early-July lows, with the RAC warning further rises are likely to continue while the conflict runs on. Analysts at Morgan Stanley also warn that European diesel stockpiles are on track to fall to multi-year lows by November, tightening supply further. The Guardian
🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity
Status: Monitoring. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts a G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm is possible on 22 July, with nothing above G1 predicted before then. This is below the threshold for any noticeable household impact. NOAA SWPC
🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts
No significant UK household impacts reported at this time.
🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports
Status: Developing. As covered above, the escalating Middle East conflict is squeezing European fuel supply — Morgan Stanley analysts expect diesel inventories to fall to their lowest level for the time of year since at least 2015 by November, driven by tight refining capacity rather than a lack of crude oil itself. No UK port closures or strike action are currently reported at Dover or Felixstowe.
🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards
Highlands — Cairngorms Wildfire “Surrounded” After Days of Evacuations
Status: Ongoing (improving). Fire crews have “surrounded” the large wildfire near Ryvoan Bothy, south of Nethy Bridge, which broke out on 16 July and has affected six square kilometres of the Cairngorms National Park. Homes, businesses, campsites and a ski resort in the Glenmore Forest Park area were evacuated as a precaution; police have since begun escorting residents and campers back to collect belongings. The incident remains live and roadblocks stay in place — the public is asked to continue avoiding Glenmore, Abernethy and Loch Morlich. BBC Scotland
Edinburgh — Arthur’s Seat Wildfire Overnight
Status: Ongoing. A large fire broke out on Arthur’s Seat, below Salisbury Crags, at around 18:40 on Sunday evening — smoke was visible as far away as Fife. Six fire appliances remain at the scene this morning; Police Scotland has closed Queen’s Drive, the road encircling Holyrood Park, to all vehicles. No casualties have been reported. It is the second fire at this location in three months. BBC Scotland
Greater Manchester — Moorland Wildfires Into a Second Week
Status: Ongoing. Fires at Dovestone and Swineshaw in Greater Manchester have now been burning for over a week, with fire chiefs unable to say when they will be extinguished. More than 100 firefighters, reinforced by crews from Derbyshire, South Wales, Lancashire and Hereford & Worcester, continue to tackle the blaze with helicopter water-bombing support. Smoke has repeatedly drifted across Greater Manchester, affecting local air quality. BBC News
