Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Two US troops were killed and one remains missing after Iranian attacks on Jordan overnight, with strikes now hitting infrastructure in Kuwait and UK pump prices continuing to climb as a direct result. Closer to home, a hosepipe ban takes effect across parts of west Wales from 10am today as sustained demand outpaces treatment capacity, while the heatwave breaks for northern and eastern areas but lingers into a third week for the south.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

UK-wide — Heatwave Easing in North and East, Persisting in the South

Status: Developing. BBC Weather reports northerly winds are bringing temperatures down by around 5°C in northern and eastern Scotland and eastern England as the third heatwave of summer 2026 eases. However, southern England and south Wales could see heatwave criteria met again later this week, with Bournemouth already on 15 consecutive days above its 26°C threshold. No amber or red warnings are currently in force anywhere in the UK.

See our Special Report “Heatwave Safety: What to Do When the UK Overheats” first published on 10 July 2026.

England — Longest Dry Spell in 30 Years Continues

Status: Ongoing. Central England is experiencing its longest dry spell since 1997, with Wisley in Surrey recording 31 consecutive dry days. High pressure remains dominant over the coming week, meaning little to no rainfall for most of the country outside north-west Scotland. This is the direct driver behind today’s Welsh hosepipe ban — see Water & Utilities below.

Standing Flood Alerts — Norfolk, Essex and the Thames

Status: Monitoring. The Environment Agency has low-level flood alerts (informational, not warnings) in place for the tidal Rivers Bure, Ant and Thurne, the Essex coast from Clacton to the Colne and Blackwater estuaries, the tidal Yare, and the tidal Thames from Putney Bridge to Teddington Weir. No action is required beyond routine awareness.

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts

Middle East — US Troops Killed in Jordan, Conflict Enters Eighth Night

Status: Developing. Two US service members were killed and a third remains missing after Iran struck US forces in Jordan on Friday, according to the Guardian. US Central Command has since carried out an eighth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, targeting the Revolutionary Guard units responsible, while Iran has hit US bases in Kuwait with drone attacks and struck a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, per the BBC. The US death toll in the conflict has now reached 16; Iran’s health ministry reports at least 50 dead and 500 injured over the past three weeks. This is a national security and military story first — but it’s also the direct cause of the fuel price rises covered in Banking & Cost of Living below, and continues to affect global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Full ongoing detail in our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

Europe — Passport Control Delays Nearly Triple Under New EU Border System

Status: Ongoing. Rome’s Fiumicino Airport says the new EU Entry Exit System has pushed processing time for UK nationals from 7 minutes to 20 minutes even after improvements, with some airports reporting queues of one to two hours, according to the BBC. Ryanair has told UK passengers travelling to Europe this summer to allow extra time at passport control.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

No grid warnings, capacity margin notices, or unplanned outages have been reported by National Grid ESO at this time.

💧 Water & Utilities

West Wales — Hosepipe Ban In Force From 10am Today

Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday, 18 July, the ban is now active: Dŵr Cymru/Welsh Water confirms the restriction takes effect from 10am today across affected parts of west Wales, after more than 1,000 megalitres of water a day were pumped into supply for a week straight — nearly 20% above normal demand. The company says the issue is treatment and distribution capacity, not reservoir shortage, and is running treatment works at full capacity and deploying tankers while repairing leaks around the clock.

England & Wales — Leaks Dwarf What a Hosepipe Ban Would Save

Status: Confirmed. Greenpeace UK research published yesterday found water companies in England and Wales lose 2.87 billion litres a day to leaky pipes — a fifth of all water pumped through the network, and five times more than a nationwide hosepipe ban would save (577 million litres a day), according to the Guardian, citing Ofwat figures.

UK-wide — Fuel Prices Climbing Again as Conflict Drags On

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday, 18 July, UK pump prices continue rising on the back of the renewed US-Israel-Iran conflict. According to the BBC, petrol now averages 152.54p a litre and diesel 167p, both up from early-July lows, with Brent crude back to around $87 a barrel. The RAC’s Simon Williams says further rises are likely “thick and fast” while tensions continue. Prices remain below the 2022 post-Ukraine-invasion peak of 191.5p petrol / 199p diesel, and the planned 5p fuel duty rise stays postponed until 31 December because of the conflict. Follow the full picture in our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker.

🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity

Status: Quiet. The planetary K-index remains low (Kp 0.67–1.33 over the past 24 hours) according to NOAA SWPC. No geomagnetic storm activity, aurora visibility, or HF radio/GPS disruption is expected for the UK at this time.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ If you’re in west Wales, stop using hosepipes and sprinklers from 10am today — check the Dŵr Cymru website if you’re unsure whether your postcode is affected
  • ☑️ Fill a few extra bottles or containers with tap water now while it’s freely available, in case restrictions spread
  • ☑️ If travelling to southern England or south Wales this week, plan outdoor activity for early morning or evening as heatwave conditions may return
  • ☑️ Check your fuel tank before a long journey — pump prices are rising and likely to keep climbing
  • ☑️ If flying to Europe this summer, build in extra time at passport control for the new EU border checks
  • ☑️ Keep an eye on the Middle East Conflict tracker if your household budget is sensitive to fuel and energy costs

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

With water companies under pressure and dry weather set to continue, this is a good moment to top up your emergency water storage while supply is normal — even a few clean, sealed containers in a cool cupboard give you a buffer if restrictions tighten or a mains issue hits your street. It costs nothing but a bit of cupboard space.
