Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

South East Water’s hosepipe ban is extending to Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire from Saturday, taking in 2.4 million customers on top of Kent’s existing restrictions. A new MHRA recall affects several batches of Xaggitin XL ADHD tablets over incorrect pack counts — check yours before your next dose. Oil remains above $90 a barrel as US strikes on Iran enter a tenth night, so expect fuel and energy costs to keep climbing this week.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

UK-wide — Dry, Settled Conditions Continue

Status: Confirmed. No weather warnings are currently active anywhere in the UK, according to the Met Office. Temperatures are running 20-26°C over the next few days — warm, but well short of the 30°C heatwave threshold — with the settled spell expected to hold into the weekend.

Scotland — Very High Wildfire Risk Warning Extended to Friday

Status: Ongoing. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has extended its Very High wildfire risk warning for the central Highlands and southern and eastern Scotland to Friday, as the dry, warm spell continues. See Industrial & Environmental Hazards below for the Arthur’s Seat blaze this warning covers. BBC News

Norfolk — Tidal Flood Alert (standing)

Status: Monitoring. A flood alert remains in place for the tidal Rivers Bure, Ant and Thurne in the Norfolk Broads, with high water expected to affect Potter Heigham, Wroxham boat yards and Ferry Road in Horning for several more days. This is the lowest tier of alert — flooding is possible, not expected. Environment Agency

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

MHRA Recall — Xaggitin XL Prolonged-Release Tablets (18mg, 27mg, 36mg, 54mg)

Status: Confirmed. Martindale Pharma has recalled specific batches of Xaggitin XL (methylphenidate) after complaints of incorrect tablet counts in bottles — some packs have missing tablets, others have extra. The tablets themselves are unaffected and remain safe to take, but a short pack could disrupt a dosing schedule for someone relying on them daily. Affected batches: 18mg — 183155, 185442; 27mg — 174975, 175037, 178223, 183931, 185438, 185439, 185440, 187560; 36mg — 175426, 175428, 176698, 176699, 176700, 182875, 183003; 54mg — 178338, 178432, 178481, 180343, 187926, 187927, 187928, 187929, 187930. Pharmacists and patients are asked to physically count tablets on receipt and dispensing, and report concerns via the Yellow Card scheme. MHRA

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts

Strait of Hormuz — Tenth Night of US Strikes, Tankers Struck as Fuel Costs Climb

Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (20 July), the US carried out a tenth consecutive night of strikes on Iran overnight, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard says it struck an oil tanker and two other vessels attempting to cross the strait. Iran’s president says the country is now in a “full-scale war” with the US, while the Houthis have separately announced a “maritime embargo” on Saudi Arabia. The BBC reports commercial vessels are still passing through the strait despite the attacks, and diplomatic contacts are continuing. Oil remains above $90 a barrel and European gas prices have hit a four-month high — see our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker for the effect on UK fuel and energy costs.

Global — HollowGraph Malware Hides Inside Microsoft 365 Calendars

Status: Monitoring. Security researchers have identified a new malware tool, dubbed HollowGraph, that hides attacker commands and stolen data inside Microsoft 365 calendar entries dated in the year 2050 to avoid detection. So far it’s been used in a small, targeted espionage campaign — around a dozen systems, mostly linked to an Israeli organisation — rather than a mass UK threat. It’s a useful reminder that legitimate cloud services like Microsoft 365 can be turned into cover for an attack; organisations using Microsoft 365 or Entra ID should review unusual calendar activity in their audit logs. 🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

Status: Confirmed. No significant nationwide transport disruption has been confirmed in the last 48 hours. Scattered local road closures continue for resurfacing and demolition works around the country — check National Highways before travelling if you’re in an affected area.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Status: Confirmed. No active electricity margin warnings or outage alerts have been issued for Great Britain today. NESO

South East — Hosepipe Ban Extends to 2.4 Million Customers Across Four More Counties

Status: Confirmed. As previously covered (17 July), South East Water’s hosepipe ban — already in force across Kent since June — is extending to parts of Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire. The ban formally takes effect from Saturday, but customers are being asked to stop using hosepipes and sprinklers immediately. Critics say the repeated bans reflect years of underinvestment in the network; the company says breaking the cycle “will take time.” It comes as central England experiences its longest dry spell in more than 30 years. 🏦 Banking, Finance & Cost of Living

VAT Cut on Domestic Electricity Bills from 1 October

Status: Confirmed. The government has announced plans to remove VAT from domestic electricity bills from 1 October, a move expected to save the average household around £45 a year, funded by cancelling the digital ID programme. Separately, the Office for National Statistics reported public sector net borrowing of £16bn in June — £7.9bn less than a year earlier — modestly better news for the public finances, though debt interest costs remain the fourth-highest for any June on record. The Guardian

🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity

Status: Confirmed. No geomagnetic storms, significant solar flares, or CME impacts affecting the UK have been reported in the last 48 hours. Activity remains at background levels. NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

England & Wales — Bluetongue Transmission Resumes as Midge Season Builds

Status: Ongoing. APHA confirms 12 bluetongue cases (BTV-3) in England and one in Wales so far this season, clustered in Devon, Somerset and Cheshire, plus one in the Vale of Glamorgan. The whole of England remains in a bluetongue restricted zone, alongside an all-Wales restricted zone; animals can move freely within each nation, though germinal products (semen, ova, embryos) still need testing and licensing. Temperatures are now high enough for the virus to develop inside midges again, meaning onward transmission has resumed. APHA

🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports

Status: Monitoring. No UK port closures or import disruption have been reported in the last 48 hours. The main pressure on supply chains remains indirect — continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz (see Cyber & National Security Alerts above) is pushing global oil and gas prices higher, which feeds through to UK fuel and shipping costs rather than causing a physical blockage at UK ports.

🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards

Edinburgh — Arthur’s Seat Wildfire, Queen’s Drive Remains Closed

Status: Ongoing. Fire crews remain at Arthur’s Seat after a large gorse and grassland blaze broke out on Sunday evening, with Queen’s Drive around Holyrood Park still closed to traffic. Six fire engines tackled the blaze overnight, and crews expect to be damping down hotspots “for a couple of days.” It’s the second fire at the landmark in three months. Historic Environment Scotland is urging visitors not to light fires, disposable barbecues, or drop cigarette ends, given the continued wildfire risk warning covered above. BBC News

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ Check whether you’re one of South East Water’s 2.4 million customers now covered by the hosepipe ban (Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire) — it takes effect Saturday
  • ☑️ If you or someone in your household takes Xaggitin XL, check the batch number on the label before your next dose
  • ☑️ Top up the car when convenient this week — oil above $90 a barrel is feeding through to pump prices
  • ☑️ Living near Edinburgh? Avoid Queen’s Drive and Holyrood Park until the Arthur’s Seat fire is fully out
  • ☑️ Check any of today’s recalled food or medicine batches against what’s in your cupboard or medicine cabinet
  • ☑️ Keep a bit of extra fuel in the tank as a buffer if the Strait of Hormuz situation escalates further

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

With South East Water’s ban about to bite and the driest spell in decades behind it, now’s a sensible moment to fill a few containers with tap water for drinking and cooking — not because your taps are at risk, but because a day or two’s reserve costs nothing and is one less thing to think about if restrictions tighten further this summer.
