Daily UK Prepper News — 12 October 2026

📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Flood Action Week starts today in England with a new government flood website, and Natural Resources Wales is warning households to “prepare for the unthinkable” as long-range forecasts point to a wetter, windier autumn. In south-east London, homes in SE21, SE22 and SE23 have been left with low pressure or no water after several leaks around Dulwich, a day after a burst main shut Legoland Windsor. Check your flood risk, sign up for warnings and keep some bottled water at home.

🔝 Leading Story

England — Flood Action Week Launches With a New Postcode Flood-Risk Website

Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (11 October), the government’s new flood and drought taskforce meets this week. The Environment Agency has now opened its annual Flood Action Week campaign alongside a new online service, Flood action online, according to the Birmingham Mail. You enter your postcode to see the flood risk where you live, sign up for flood warnings and get Met Office weather alerts during an incident.

Floods minister Emma Hardy urged everyone to “check their flood risk, prepare a flood plan, and follow warnings to protect their home and family”. The Environment Agency’s director for floods, Caroline Douglass, said the new site would make guidance easier to find, backed by £4.2 billion of investment in new and existing flood defences.

Household impact: five minutes with your postcode tells you whether your home is at risk and gets you warnings before water arrives, which is when sandbags, flood socks and moving valuables upstairs still make a difference.

🏛️ Government Preparedness & Resilience Policy

Wales — NRW Tells Households to “Prepare for the Unthinkable” This Autumn

Status: Confirmed. BBC News reports that Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is worried by long-range forecasts showing a higher chance of wetter, windier weather than usual over the coming months, and has told people not to become complacent after a summer of drought and wildfires. One in seven properties in Wales is at risk of flooding, more than 274,500 homes and businesses, but only 27% of those eligible for free flood warnings by phone or email have signed up.

NRW says Wales is especially exposed because of its long coastline and “fast-responding” rivers, such as those in the south Wales valleys, which fill quickly as rain runs off steep ground. Monmouth is still recovering from Storm Claudia in November 2025. Household impact: if you live in Wales and haven’t signed up for NRW flood warnings, that’s the first job. Then make a simple plan for what you’d move, switch off and grab.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

Pacific — El Niño Breaks a Sea Temperature Record Before Reaching Its Peak

Status: Developing. The EU’s Copernicus Climate Change Service says sea surface temperatures in the key Niño 3.4 monitoring region hit an all-time high of 29.70°C in September, above the peaks of the strong El Niño events of 1982/83, 1997/98 and 2015/16, reports AFP via AOL. Copernicus says it can’t yet call this the strongest El Niño on record, because warmer oceans make comparisons with older events harder, but describes it as “already exceptionally strong” with the peak still to come. The UN expects it to intensify before peaking in December. Household impact: the run of forecasts pointing to a stormier UK winter is consistent with this, which is why the flood preparation above matters now rather than in December. See our Special Report “El Nino UK Winter 2026: The Record Storm Season” first published on 5 September 2026.

💰 Scams

UK-Wide — Roofing Is Now the Most Common Scam Reported to Citizens Advice

Status: Confirmed. One in ten scams recorded by Citizens Advice over the past year involved roofing, making it the most common type brought to the charity, reports BBC News. Its consumer service received 9,000 complaints about roofing work in the year to August, and 2,205 of them (about one in four) were suspected scams. Three quarters of the fraudsters used doorstep sales tactics. In one case, a 65-year-old woman living alone in north-east England was talked up from a £250 gutter repair to £3,500 in a single evening, with no sign of any work the next day.

Citizens Advice’s advice: be wary of anyone who knocks on your door or calls unasked, always ask for references and get everything in writing, and keep photos and receipts if something goes wrong. Traders must tell you in writing about your right to cancel, and the Consumer Rights Act 2015 entitles you to a repair or refund if work isn’t done with reasonable care and skill. Household impact: with autumn storms coming, expect more “I noticed a loose tile” doorstep approaches. Get your own quotes from traders you’ve chosen yourself.

💧 Water & Utilities

Dulwich, South-East London — Several Leaks Leave SE21, SE22 and SE23 With Low Pressure or No Water

Status: Developing. Thames Water says customers in SE21, SE22 and SE23 may have low water pressure or no supply after several leaks around Dulwich, on Lordship Lane, London Road near the Horniman Museum and Dulwich Common, reports London Now. The leaks have caused flooding and damaged road surfaces, so traffic management is in place. Thames Water is moving water around its network to keep homes supplied while repairs are planned, and promised a further update by 11am today. Household impact: if you’re in those postcodes, fill a few containers while you still have pressure. Keeping a small stock of bottled water at home means a leak like this is an inconvenience rather than a crisis.

Windsor, Berkshire — Burst Main Near St Leonards Reservoir Shuts Legoland Mid-Afternoon

Status: Confirmed. Legoland Windsor ordered visitors off the rides and out of the resort at about 1pm on Sunday after Thames Water shut off a damaged main near St Leonards Reservoir to prevent flooding, cutting the park’s supply, reports BBC News. Some local residents reported flooded gardens. Thames Water says supplies have been restored and permanent repairs are under way, and the BBC understands the park reopens today as normal. Household impact: even a large, well-run site had no way to keep going once the mains stopped. A home with no stored water is in the same position the moment a main fails.

Lundy, Devon — Island Restricts Water Use and Caps Visitors After a Rainless Summer

Status: Ongoing. No significant rain has fallen on Lundy, 10 miles off the north Devon coast, since the start of May, reports The Guardian. The island relies on rainwater and five boreholes, and water levels are now so low that restrictions are in place, visitor numbers are capped, 1,000-litre containers are being shipped in to top up tanks, and evacuating its 28 residents has been discussed. Staff take quick showers, catch the water in a bucket and use it to flush the toilet. Household impact: Lundy is an extreme case, but its habits (quick showers, reusing grey water to flush, fixing drips at once) are exactly what makes a household water stock last during an outage or hosepipe ban. This week’s milder, showery weather is not expected to bring enough rain to ease drought in the worst-hit parts of England.

🛡️ National Security

Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely)

UK Security News

Gloucestershire — Officials Weigh a Public Warning on Iran After the RAF Fairford Incident

Status: Developing. Western officials are considering whether to warn publicly that Iran now has US military targets in Europe in mind, such as RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, according to analysis by The Guardian‘s defence and security editor. This follows the confused incident on 27 September, when five men from London were arrested in Whelford, next to the base, and released on bail a day later after no explosives or plot were found. The US then withdrew the 12 B-1 bombers it had stationed there. The Guardian says MI5 already accepts that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has sought to coordinate the targeting of the Jewish community in the UK and Europe, though there is British scepticism about Iran’s ability to carry out a drone raid on a secure base so far from Tehran. Household impact: nothing changes for most households today, but it’s part of why the national threat level stays at Severe. Report anything suspicious to 999 or the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.

🏭 Industrial Hazards

Aberdeen — Fire That Killed Two Sisters Was Started by Candles, Report Finds

Status: Confirmed. A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service incident report obtained by BBC Scotland News through a Freedom of Information request shows that the fire which killed Shikshya and Aanchal Subedi, aged 24 and 28, at a block on Back Hilton Road in January 2024 was started by candles in the flat below. A mattress in a lower-floor bedroom caught light and a lithium battery then made the fire spread rapidly. The sisters were trapped by smoke. Household impact: as power cut season approaches, use battery or rechargeable lanterns instead of candles, never leave a naked flame unattended near bedding, keep lithium battery packs and e-bike batteries away from soft furnishings, and test your smoke alarms.

Machynlleth, Powys — Fire at Atherton Bikes Closes Treowain Industrial Estate

Status: Confirmed. Fire crews were called to Atherton Bikes at Treowain business park in Machynlleth at 8am on Sunday, and Dyfed-Powys Police closed the industrial estate and asked people to avoid the area, according to the Shropshire Star and County Times. Footage showed heavy smoke pouring from the building. Co-founder Rachel Atherton said the situation was under control. Household impact: if you’re near an industrial fire, keep windows and doors shut while smoke is drifting and follow police advice on routes.

🚢 Supply Chain

UK-Wide — Farmers Warn Rising Costs Threaten Food Security as MPs Open Inquiry Hearings Today

Status: Developing. Arable farmers say the cost of red diesel has almost doubled since the conflict in Iran began, and most fertilisers and animal feed have risen by about 20%, reports The Guardian. This comes after heatwaves and drought gave England its worst recorded cereals harvest. “Some of these businesses aren’t going to make it,” said Jamie Burrows, chair of the National Farmers’ Union crops board. Parliament’s public accounts committee begins hearings today in its inquiry into the resilience of the UK food supply, looking at the National Audit Office’s findings that Defra’s last catastrophe-planning exercise largely left out food supply chain businesses. Britain produces about 60% of the food it needs. Household impact: a weaker home harvest and dearer inputs point to firmer food prices into winter, which is a good reason to build a modest store of long-life food while prices are steady. Fuel price effects of the conflict are tracked in our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker. See our Special Report “Nutritionists Are Wrong About Your Emergency Food Supply” first published on 21 September 2026.

💷 Cost of Living

Wiltshire, Gloucestershire & Rural UK — Heating Oil Back Above 110p a Litre as Winter Top-Ups Begin

Status: Confirmed. Heating oil is rising again and now stands at 111p a litre, according to price comparison site Boiler Juice, reports BBC News. It was steady at about 60p until the Iran war began in March, then peaked at 134p. About one and a half million people in the UK, mostly in rural areas, heat their homes with oil, and unlike gas and electricity the market is unregulated, so global price moves reach customers quickly. A typical 500-litre top-up now costs about £550. One Minety resident said the same fill was about £300 last year. The Competition and Markets Authority says customers in remote areas need stronger safeguards. Oil buying clubs, such as one in Wiltshire with more than 1,000 members, can bring the price down, and local schemes like Wiltshire’s Surviving Winter campaign help with heating costs. A government spokesperson pointed eligible households to £9,000 grants for switching to clean heating. More on the conflict’s household costs in our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

Great Britain — Bluetongue Reaches 3,301 Cases After 66 More Confirmed in England

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (11 October), cases had passed 3,200. The Animal and Plant Health Agency now records 3,301 cases of bluetongue serotype 3 (or unspecified serotype) this season: 2,775 in England, 478 in Wales, 48 in Scotland and none in Northern Ireland. 66 new cases were confirmed in England on 10 October. There have still been no cases of serotype 8 this season. Household impact: there’s no risk to people or food, but livestock keepers should keep vaccinating, check animals for signs and follow movement rules.

🏦 Banking & Finance

UK-Wide — Average Five-Year Fixed Mortgage Hits 6% for the First Time in Three Years

Status: Confirmed. The average rate on a new five-year fixed mortgage has reached 6% for the first time since September 2023, and about 1,500 deals priced below 5% have disappeared since the start of September, according to Moneyfacts, reports the Birmingham Mail. Moneyfacts’ Rachel Springall called the rise “brutal” and “disastrous news for borrowers”. Household impact: if your fixed deal ends in the next six months, speak to your lender or a broker now. Many lenders let you lock in a rate months ahead, which protects you if rates rise further.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ Enter your postcode on the government’s new flood website and sign up for free flood warnings (in Wales, sign up with NRW)
  • ☑️ Write a simple flood plan: what you’d move upstairs, where the stopcock and fuse box are, and what goes in a grab bag
  • ☑️ In SE21, SE22 or SE23? Fill a few containers with water while pressure holds
  • ☑️ Keep at least a few days of bottled water at home for burst-main days like the ones in Dulwich and Windsor
  • ☑️ On heating oil? Check your tank level and compare prices or join a local buying club before the cold sets in
  • ☑️ Swap candles for battery lanterns before power cut season, and test your smoke alarms

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

Make a one-page flood plan this week and stick it inside a kitchen cupboard door. List where your stopcock, gas valve and fuse box are, the numbers you’d need (Floodline 0345 988 1188, your insurer, a neighbour), and the three things you’d move upstairs first. It takes ten minutes, costs nothing, and means nobody in the house has to think clearly at 2am with water coming under the door.
