FireAngel SCB10-R Review: Combined Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Most homes have a smoke alarm. Fewer have a carbon monoxide alarm. The FireAngel SCB10-R puts both in one white unit on the ceiling, runs on a sealed battery that lasts its whole 10-year life, and carries on working whatever the mains is doing.

That last part is why this FireAngel SCB10-R review is on a preparedness site at all. A power cut is when the candles, the camping stove and the spare heater come out, and the FireAngel SCB10-R doesn’t need the grid, a backup battery or anyone remembering to change anything. Fit it, test it, and leave it be for the next decade.

What the FireAngel SCB10-R Does

The FireAngel SCB10-R is a combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarm: two sensors, one unit, one spot on the ceiling or wall. The optical smoke sensor picks up thick white smoke as it enters the alarm, which is what slow, smouldering fires produce. The electrochemical CO sensor watches for carbon monoxide, the gas you can’t see, smell or taste.

Because the optical sensor reacts to thick smoke rather than the faintest whiff, it’s less inclined to go off over a bit of toast. Anyone who has stood on a chair at 7am waving a tea towel at the hallway ceiling will know the value of that.

When it does sound, the FireAngel SCB10-R tells you which problem you’ve got. Smoke and CO each have their own alarm sound and their own visual indicator, so you know whether it’s a fire or gas before you’re properly awake. The two need different responses, which is exactly why that matters.

A Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm in One Unit

Two separate alarms means two things to buy, two things to fit, two things to test and two things to forget about. A smoke and carbon monoxide alarm in a single unit halves all of that, and for most homes one on each floor near the bedrooms covers both threats.

Carbon monoxide comes from anything that burns fuel: gas boilers, gas fires, wood burners, open fires, and the camping stoves and portable heaters that come out when the power goes. Plenty of UK homes have a smoke alarm on every floor and no CO alarm at all. The FireAngel SCB10-R closes that gap in one go.

The Sealed 10-Year Battery

The FireAngel SCB10-R runs on a 10-year sealed battery that lasts the alarm’s lifetime. There’s no battery door, nothing to swap, and nothing to pinch for the TV remote on a Sunday night.

When it reaches the end of its life, it tells you plainly: two chirps, and the amber light flashes twice every 40 seconds. That’s the signal to replace the whole unit. No guessing, and no wondering whether a battery fitted during the last general election still has anything left in it.

It’s a compact white unit, a little over 4cm deep and around 200g, so it sits neatly on any ceiling without looking like a piece of industrial plant.

Why the FireAngel SCB10-R Suits a Power Cut

Plenty of alarms in UK homes are wired to the mains, and most of those have a backup battery tucked inside. That’s fine as far as it goes, but a backup battery is still something that ages quietly, gets forgotten, or gets pulled out at 2am when it starts chirping and never quite makes it back in.

The FireAngel SCB10-R has no mains connection to lose and no backup to worry about. It’s the same alarm with the lights on or off. A storm takes the power out overnight, the fuse box trips, the whole street goes dark: it carries on exactly as before.

And a power cut is precisely when a home starts doing things it doesn’t usually do. Candles on the mantelpiece, a gas camping stove on the worktop for a brew, a heater in the living room because the boiler pump needs electricity to run. A combined smoke and carbon monoxide alarm that ignores the outage completely is the sensible base to build the rest of your power cut plans on.

Where to Fit It

The FireAngel SCB10-R suits the landing, hallway, bedroom, living room and dining room. Fit it on the wall or the ceiling, as close to where people sleep as you can. In a typical two-storey house that means one on the landing outside the bedrooms, plus one downstairs in the hall or the living room, especially if that’s where the gas fire or wood burner lives.

Because it runs entirely on its own battery, there’s no wiring and no electrician. If you can put up a shelf, you can fit a FireAngel SCB10-R.

Standards and Warranty

The FireAngel SCB10-R is CE and UKCA marked, Kitemark certified, and third-party approved by the British Standards Institution (BSI) to EN 14604 for smoke alarms and EN 50291-1 for carbon monoxide alarms. Those are the standards UK smoke and CO alarms are tested against, and it’s approved to both. It also comes with a 3-year warranty.

Is the FireAngel SCB10-R Right for Your Home?

The FireAngel SCB10-R is a standalone alarm. It doesn’t link to other alarms around the house, and there’s no app. If you want every alarm in the house to sound together, or a notification on your phone while you’re out, that’s a different, pricier kind of system.

For most households that simply want smoke and carbon monoxide covered properly, with no wiring, no apps and no battery changes, that simplicity is the whole point. One per floor, a test now and then, and it’s done for ten years. If you’re going to buy one bit of safety kit before winter, a FireAngel carbon monoxide alarm that also handles smoke is a very good place to start.

What the Rest of the Team Think

My wife asked me to change the batteries in the smoke alarms. I explained this one is sealed for ten years. She said it was the first thing I’d bought that didn’t need anything from her. I’ve fitted one on the landing and one in the hall. I’ve also bought a spare. For the spare.

No mains dependency. No battery resupply for a decade. Separate audible signatures for smoke and CO, so the threat is identified before boots are on. In my previous role we’d have networked the lot. For a house, one per floor does the job. Carry on.

I bought the all-singing, app-connected, whole-house linked system. It’s still in the box because it needs an electrician, a hub and a password I’ve already forgotten. This one went straight up on the ceiling and is currently the only working alarm I own. I’m not entirely sure what that says about me.

Dual-threat detection, distinct audio signatures, zero grid dependency. Grid-down ready, bro. Pickle heard the test beep and relocated to the garden at speed, which I’ve logged as an outstanding evacuation drill. She’s sharper than half the guys on the channel.

Snorgle!

I have been saying for years that half the alarms in this country rely on a backup battery nobody has looked at since the London Olympics. Years. This one doesn’t rely on anything. I checked it for listening devices. Clean. Not smug. Slightly smug.

One on the landing outside the bedrooms, one in the downstairs hallway, one in the living room by the wood burner. The sealed battery has removed an entire line from the monthly maintenance rota. Janet has reprinted the rota. It is laminated.

Okay so carbon monoxide is literally the silent thing nobody talks about, which is probably why my home safety reel did so well? Also it’s white and round so zero visual clutter on the ceiling. Three people asked if it comes in rose gold. It does not. 💕 #homeprep #survivlgurl

I placed a piece of rose quartz on the landing to welcome it into the home. It asks nothing of the National Grid, which I find deeply freeing. Its voice is sharp, but then so is truth. Namaste 🙏
