Santander says more than £3 million has been stolen from its customers through bank impersonation scams so far this year, with an average loss of £6,000. The scam typically starts with a text claiming a payment has been set up on your account, asking you to call a number if you don’t recognise it — the person who answers then talks victims into handing over card details, PINs or a “safe account” to transfer savings to.
Households: never call a number given inside a message claiming to be from your bank. Hang up and call using the number on your card or a genuine statement instead.

South West Water is doing more harm to the environment than any other water company in England, according to a Friends of the Earth analysis, with the highest total sewage spill duration of any English water company — averaging 574,323 hours a year since 2024 — and 666 pollution incidents or warnings recorded across its 157 designated bathing sites in 2025 alone. The company, which covers Devon, Cornwall and parts of Dorset and Somerset, says storm overflow spills are down 17% and spill duration down 25% over the past year. Its roughly 1.8 million customers face some of the highest water bills in England, at £726 a year, up 39% since 2024.
Brighton & Seaford, East Sussex — Sewage Alerts Keep Beaches Off-Limits to Swimmers
Status: Ongoing. A Guardian report from Brighton beach found regular swimmers now check for sewage discharge alerts as routinely as the weather forecast — the beach has had two sewage alerts issued in August alone, and 158 recorded in 2025.
Abergavenny, Wales — Drought-Exposed Hazards Close Popular Swimming Spot
Status: Confirmed. Keepers Pond in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons) has been closed to swimmers, paddleboarders and kayakers after months of dry weather — plus water drawn off to help fight nearby wildfires — exposed previously hidden hazards on the pond bed. The whole of Wales has been in drought status since last month.

England — Water Companies Under Pressure as Ground Stays Slow to Recover
Status: Ongoing. A BBC analysis warns England could face a shortfall of 5 billion litres a day in public water supply by 2055 without action. Households are responsible for nearly 60% of water use in England and Wales, and average consumption here — 136.5 litres per person per day — is well above Denmark’s 97 litres. Ofwat says leakage has been cut by 43% since 1989, but more than 45 litres per person per day — nearly a fifth of the network’s total — is still being lost from ageing pipes.
With mains supply under sustained, structural pressure rather than a one-off summer blip, storing some rainwater and keeping consumption down is worth treating as a year-round habit, not just a drought-season one.

Ofgem’s price cap is set to rise 4% from 1 October — the second increase in three months, after climbing 13% at the start of July — taking the rate for 22 million households on default tariffs to the equivalent of £1,723 a year, just as many people start turning their heating back on.
