Do you remember the queue? The one that snaked round the supermarket car park at 6am in March 2020, when the pasta, the tins, the flour and the toilet roll had all gone?

Most of us had seen it coming and thought, “Nah, it won’t get that bad here.” This book is about never standing in that queue unprepared again. Not with a bunker, a tactical vest or a year of freeze-dried rations, but with a torch that works, a few days of food in the cupboard and a plan on the fridge.

This Book Is Not for Survivalists

Almost everything written about preparedness is either American or aimed at people who talk about “the collapse”. Neither is any use to a family of four in a semi in Liverpool, which is most of us.

Our real emergencies are floods, power cuts, storms, burst pipes and empty shelves. In October 2026 the government’s Be Ready campaign asked every household to be able to look after itself for at least three days. “Prepared, Not Panicked” takes that list and shows you how to do it properly, on any budget, in any home.

What’s Inside

It opens with Start Here: Your Be Ready 3 Days, the official list with what we’d add, then works through the whole house:

  1. Why This Book Exists (And Why You Need It)
  2. The Reality Check
  3. Water
  4. Food
  5. Power, Light and Heat
  6. Cooking Without Power
  7. People Who Need Extra Planning
  8. Home First
  9. DIY Fixes for Everyday Emergencies
  10. Hygiene, Sanitation and Staying Clean
  11. Home Security When Things Go Wrong
  12. Why “Bugging Out” Is Mostly a Fantasy
  13. First Aid
  14. Staying in Touch When the Networks Fail
  15. Transport
  16. The Big, Unlikely Things
  17. Your Household Plan
  18. Be the Neighbour Everyone Needs

At the back: a tick list to get you started, and the UK phone numbers and services worth writing down before you need them. Every chapter ends with an “Action This Week” list, so you finish each one with something done, not just something read.

Take a Look Inside

The whole team is in there. Keith shows you what not to do, Greasy Gary runs the kitchen, Calm Clarissa hands out the checklists, and the Be Ready boxes keep you in line with the official advice.

Sample page: the opening of Chapter 1, with a cartoon of Keith at a kitchen cupboard Sample page: the Be Ready box listing what the government asks every household to keep for three days Sample page: a Don't Be Keith box about using a phone as an emergency light Sample page: Greasy Gary's rules for washing up with no running water

Who It’s For

Everyone, including the people most preparedness advice forgets: older people, disabled people, carers, families on tight budgets, people in flats and people in cities. You don’t need to have thought about any of this before. The goal is simple: finish the book and think “I could do that.”

What Readers Say

“Your advice is very pragmatic, clear and not alarmist at all.”

Tiffany

“This is amazing work. Just what we need to help us get ready for anything that might realistically occur.”

About the Author

I’m Darren Rhodes, and I run UK Prepper Hub. I grew up making survival kits in tobacco tins, worked as an outdoor pursuits instructor, and hold Mountain First Aid qualifications. Managing a leisure centre, I wrote the real Emergency Action Plans: bomb threats, gas leaks, structural failure and flooding. I live rurally, where power cuts are a regular thing, so everything in this book gets used, not just written about. I also wrote Think Before You Tap, a guide to online safety for children.
