📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Flights into Jersey were halted for a second night running after drones entered the airport’s restricted airspace, leaving passengers from Heathrow, Gatwick and Southampton stranded. In Poole, neighbours were moved out of their homes overnight after a suspected explosive device was found in a parked car and made safe. If you’re travelling this week, keep your phone charged and a change of plan in mind, and make sure you could leave home quickly with your essentials if police knocked on the door.

🔝 Leading Story

Jersey — Flights Halted for a Second Night After Drone Sightings

Status: Developing. Jersey Airport said at 20:05 on Saturday that it was “experiencing disruption” to inbound flights because of “further drone activity in the vicinity of the airfield”, BBC News reports. All late evening flights into the island were cancelled, including services from Heathrow, Southampton and Gatwick, according to LBC. On Friday evening, three flights were diverted back to the UK for the same reason.

States of Jersey Police believe “two or three” drones entered the restricted airspace, and said they are not thought to be linked to terrorism. Officers have asked anyone with information to come forward.

An island depends on its transport links, and two or three small drones were enough to cut one of them for two nights. If you’re flying this week, keep your booking app notifications on, carry a charged power bank and a day’s medication in your hand luggage, and have a plan for where you would stay if you ended up stuck at either end.

🏛️ Government Preparedness & Resilience Policy

UK — Nutritionist’s Food List for the Be Ready Three-Day Supply

Status: Confirmed. With the government’s Be Ready campaign asking households to hold three days of key supplies, nutritionist Rob Hobson has set out what he would stock, WalesOnline reports. His list favours food that lasts and needs no cooking: tinned beans, chickpeas and lentils, tinned fish, ready-to-eat rice and grains that can be eaten cold, tinned and jarred fruit and vegetables, UHT milk, fortified cereals, nuts, seeds, nut butters, oats, crackers and long-life wraps. He also suggests sauces and sachets, because a few flavours make basic meals far easier to eat. For a household, the useful test is simple: could you make a meal from it with no power and no fridge?

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

Midlands, East of England, South, Wales and Yorkshire — Yellow Fog Warning Until 10am

Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (31 October), fog is still causing trouble. The Met Office has a yellow warning in force until 10am today across the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East, South West England, the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humber, parts of Cheshire and parts of Wales (Denbighshire, Monmouthshire, Powys, Torfaen and Wrexham). Visibility could fall below 100 metres in dense patches.

The fog isn’t finished, either. BBC Weather says high pressure will keep the risk going from Monday to Friday, shifting north, with the morning commute most prone in the Scottish glens, the Central Belt, the Cheshire Plains, the Vale of York and parts of Northern Ireland. More warnings could follow. Allow extra time, use dipped headlights, and keep a warm layer and a charged phone in the car in case you get stuck behind a collision.

Flintshire and Swindon — Halloween Power Cuts Hit Homes

Status: Confirmed. An unexpected fault reported at 9.18am on Saturday cut power to 87 postcodes in and around Flintshire, The Leader reports, with supplies first expected back by 2.15pm before the estimate changed to ‘TBD’. In Swindon, 43 SN1 households lost power at around 4.50pm after a fault on the SSEN network, with no restoration time available until engineers arrived, the Swindon Advertiser reports. With the clocks now back, an early-evening fault means sitting in the dark straight away, so keep a torch where you can find it by feel.

💧 Water & Utilities

England — North West Eases, but 11 Reservoirs Remain Exceptionally Low

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (31 October), the rain hasn’t ended the drought. The Environment Agency has moved north-west England, including Cumbria, to “in recovery” after England’s wettest week in two years. But BBC Weather reports 11 reservoirs are still classed as exceptionally low, with Wimbleball in Somerset and Ardingly in West Sussex under 20% of normal capacity. The EA says England needs at least 120% of average rainfall over the next six months to leave drought by spring.

In Hampshire, Southern Water says it can’t yet say when the hosepipe ban there and on the Isle of Wight will lift, despite the River Test improving. A wet week doesn’t mean the taps are safe, so keep your stored water topped up.

UK — Report Puts a Serious Russia-Linked Cyber Attack at £4bn

Status: Confirmed. Analysis by Moody’s, carried out for MP Graeme Downie, estimates that a serious but realistic Russia-linked cyber attack could cost the UK more than £4bn, with roughly a one-in-ten chance in any given year, the Mirror reports. For households, the practical answer stays the same: keep some cash at home and paper copies of key numbers in case online services go down.

🛡️ National Security

Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.

Status: Ongoing. The Environment Agency says 59% of its 414 current water abstraction restrictions affect agricultural licences, around 244 in all, concentrated in the Midlands, East Anglia, Kent, the South East and the South West, Farmers Guide reports.
