📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Hundreds more residents in Canning Town, east London, were told to leave their homes last night as the evacuation widened to five tower blocks over an “imminent risk to life”. Devon households are being warned that some could temporarily lose their piped water if the drought worsens, with up to 10 largely dry days now in the forecast. Fill a few bottles of drinking water now, and keep your important documents somewhere you can grab them in seconds.

🔝 Leading Story

Canning Town, East London — Evacuation Widens to Five Tower Blocks Over “Imminent Risk to Life”

Status: Developing. The evacuation first covered here last week (24 October) has grown. Residents of Thanet Tower and Prince Court received evacuation notices on Friday, joining Centurion Tower, St Vincent Court and Sovereign Tower, the Evening Standard reports. The notice says the concrete transfer slabs beneath the blocks are undersized and “significantly overstressed”, and that the south buildings “should therefore not be occupied”. Around 210 households in the north buildings have already been out for a week and still have no return date.

The household lesson is a hard one. Residents have been told to pay for their own accommodation in the first instance, with the property managers saying they will try to recover the costs later. An emergency that moves you out of your home can also leave you funding it yourself for weeks. Check whether your home or contents insurance covers alternative accommodation, keep copies of your policy and ID in a grab bag, and know who you could stay with at short notice.

Midlands, Eastern England, Yorkshire and North Wales Borders — Yellow Fog Warning Until 10am

Status: Confirmed. The Met Office has a yellow fog warning in force until 10am today, covering Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire, Yorkshire and parts of north and mid Wales, among other areas. Expect slower journeys, possible bus and train delays, and a chance of flight delays or cancellations. Allow extra time and make sure you know how to switch on your fog lights. BBC Weather says more foggy mornings are likely as high pressure builds, with some dense patches slow to clear.

Cumbria — One Flood Alert Remains

Status: Monitoring. A flood alert is still in place for the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwent Water, the Environment Agency shows. No flood warnings are in force in England this morning.

If you lose power at home, call 105 free from any phone, and keep a torch where you can find it without any light at all.

💧 Water & Utilities

Devon — Council Warns Some Homes Could Temporarily Lose Piped Water

Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (30 October), South West Water has said how close it came to running out. Now Devon County Council says some homes could temporarily lose their piped supply if the drought gets worse, and is urging everyone to cut use now, the North Devon Gazette reports. Wimbleball on Exmoor, which supports Exeter, is at 14%, and Kennick, Tottiford and Trenchford, which serve Torbay, are at 18%. The council says the free Priority Services Register will provide extra support for vulnerable households. If you or someone you know relies on water for medical or personal care, or can’t carry supplies, sign up now. See our Special Report “Why Is There a Hosepipe Ban?” first published on 8 August 2026.

England — 82% Still in Drought With Up to 10 Dry Days Ahead

Status: Ongoing. The National Drought Group says the recent rain was “nowhere near enough”, and England needs at least 120% of average rainfall for six months to be out of drought by spring, Agriland reports. Devon and Cornwall and East Anglia are most at risk of drought running into next year, while North West England has moved into recovery. Last week was England’s wettest in two years and 11 reservoirs are still exceptionally low, according to BBC Weather, which now says the UK could see 10 days without rain. Around 244 restrictions on agricultural water licences remain in place, mainly in the Midlands, East Anglia, Kent, the South East and the South West, Farmers Guide reports.

Lanchester, County Durham — Water Main Bursts Above Telegraph Pole Height

Status: Confirmed. A burst main on West Drive sent water higher than a telegraph pole on Thursday, flooding the street, the Northern Echo reports. Northumbrian Water restored supplies within 50 minutes. It was a quick fix this time, but a burst can cut your tap off without warning, which is why a little stored water at home is worth having.

🔒 Cyber Security

Phase Eight, Hobbs and Whistles — Customer Data Accessed in Cyber Attack

Status: Confirmed. Owner TFG London has told customers that personal information was accessed in an attack discovered on 11 October, AOL reports. Worldwide — Binance Hack: $3bn Located as UK Watchdogs Monitor Fallout

Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (30 October), North Korean hackers are blamed for the $6.3bn theft. The Guardian reports that UK financial watchdogs are monitoring the fallout, and that about $3bn has been located so far. Binance says user funds are safe and it will cover all hacking losses. Expect scammers to use this: nobody genuine will contact you asking you to move crypto to a “safe” wallet.

France and US — Supermarket Freezers Hit by Suspected Remote Attacks

Status: Developing. Attackers manipulated refrigeration controls at hundreds of French supermarkets on 11-12 October, spoiling fresh and frozen food, and the Pentagon is now investigating failures at at least six US military commissaries, Tech Times reports. The US cause is not confirmed and there is no report of a UK incident. It’s a clear reminder that the food chain depends on connected systems, and a few days’ supply at home doesn’t. See our Special Report “We Are One Button Away” first published on 4 July 2026.

🛡️ National Security

Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.
