📰 Quick News Brief

South West Water says the region came “close” to running out of water before the recent rain, and hosepipe bans there and in Norfolk look set to last through the winter. Around 500 GP practices have lost their websites and online booking after a tech firm collapsed, so patients affected need to phone or go in, or use the NHS App, which is still working.
🔝 Leading Story
Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Norfolk — South West Water Says It Came “Close” to Running Out as Bans Head Into Winter
Status: Ongoing. As previously covered (28 October), Storms Austen and Boelo haven’t ended the drought. Asked how close the South West came to running out of water, South West Water’s drought programme director Richard Stanbrook told the BBC: “We were close, but every step we took meant that it wasn’t something that was very likely to happen.” The company has also applied for a non-essential use ban, which would hit some businesses, including car washes and window cleaners.
The latest figures show how little the rain has done:
- Wimbleball on Exmoor, which supplies around 400,000 people, went from a record low of 12.5% full on 22 October to just 14% on 26 October.
- In Cornwall, Colliford is 33% full, Drift 32% and Stithians 22%, the Cornish & Devon Post reports.
- South West Water is repairing an average of 440 leaks a week.
The Environment Agency says England needs 120% of its typical rainfall to be out of drought by spring, and that average or below-average rain would carry the drought into next summer. Its area director for Devon and Cornwall, Mark Rice, said: “We won’t run out of water this winter.” In Norfolk, the Lynn News reports the Anglian Water ban that began on 11 July will run through the winter and could drag into spring, though Anglian says none of its supply areas will reach “Day Zero”, even in its worst-case forecasts.
If you’re in a drought area, treat a few days of stored drinking water as normal winter kit rather than an emergency measure. See our Special Report “Why Is There a Hosepipe Ban?” first published on 8 August 2026.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook
Lincolnshire, East Midlands, Home Counties and Parts of London — Yellow Fog Warning Until 10am
Status: Confirmed. The Met Office has a yellow warning for fog until 10am, with visibility below 100 metres at times during the morning rush hour, the BBC reports. It may not clear until this afternoon in some rural spots in eastern England. Leave extra time, check your fog lights work, and expect possible delays to buses, trains and flights. The warning is the only one on the Met Office’s seven-day list. The weekend looks mainly dry.
Cumbria and Norfolk — Three Flood Alerts Remain
Status: Ongoing. The Environment Agency has flood alerts in force for the Rivers Brathay, Rothay and Winster, the Upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwent Water, and the tidal Rivers Bure, Ant and Thurne. The Keswick Campsite flood warning has been lifted, and there are no flood warnings in England this morning.
💰 Scams
Worldwide — Online Scams Double in a Year and Overtake Phishing
Status: Confirmed. Detections of online scams doubled to around 6.4 million between April and June 2026, from 3.2 million in July to September 2025, overtaking phishing for the first time, according to an Akamai report covered by Infosecurity Magazine. The figures cover fake shops, investment scams, tech support scams and payment fraud. With Christmas shopping about to start, check an unfamiliar online shop before you pay, and pay by credit card where you can.
⚡ Power & Infrastructure
Reading, Bury and Buckley — Unplanned Power Cuts Hit Homes and Businesses
Status: Confirmed. Around 290 homes in Whitley, Reading, lost power yesterday lunchtime after a fault on the underground network, the Reading Chronicle reports. In Bury, a power cut affecting 29 properties kept town centre businesses shut, including a record shop and café that could not open until supply was restored, the Bury Times reports. Six postcodes in Buckley, Flintshire, also lost power at 7.25am, the Leader reports. None of these needed a storm. A light that comes on by itself when the power goes means you aren’t hunting for a torch in the dark.

🌳 Environmental Hazards
UK — RAF Aircraft to Be Adapted for Wildfire Work After 1,100 Call-Outs
Status: Confirmed. The UK plans its first permanent military aerial firefighting capability, modifying RAF A400M planes and Chinook helicopters to reach steep hillsides and remote moorland, after a summer with more than 1,100 wildfire responses and homes destroyed in Stourbridge, The Cool Down reports, citing The Independent. Up to £45m is going on lighter specialist clothing for firefighters. If you live next to heath, moor or grassland, clear dead vegetation away from the house and know two ways out.
💧 Water & Utilities
England and Wales — South East Water Rated Worst for Supply Interruptions
Status: Confirmed. A joint report by four regulators has found South East Water’s supply interruptions “deteriorated significantly” and are “the worst in the industry”, with minutes of supply lost per property up six times on 2024, The Argus reports. Eight of the nine big water companies in England were rated “poor” or “requiring improvement”, and environmental performance scored 16 stars out of 36, the lowest since the ratings began, the Guardian reports. Environment Secretary Angela Eagle has summoned the bosses to Whitehall. In the same week, Parry Close in Eastbourne lost water pressure or supply with no warning during emergency repairs, SussexWorld reports. If you’re in a South East Water area, the case for stored water is stronger than most.
🔒 Cyber Security
Worldwide — North Korean Hackers Blamed for $6.3bn Binance Theft
Status: Developing. More than $6.3bn (£4.7bn) in digital assets has reportedly been taken from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, apparently after an engineer’s laptop was hacked, the Guardian reports. Blockchain intelligence firm TRM blames North Korea’s TraderTraitor unit, and says it is the largest crypto theft on record. Binance says user funds are safe, about $3bn has been frozen, and withdrawals are suspended while it completes a security revamp. If you hold crypto there, expect phishing messages pretending to be Binance. Don’t click links about your account.
Belgium — Cyberattack Takes Tax Portal Offline and Pushes Back Deadlines
Status: Developing. Belgium’s finance agency took its main tax portal and several other platforms offline on 28 October after attackers got into its systems, and extended filing deadlines to 16 November, International Business Times UK reports. The agency says no data was leaked. It’s a small example of why the government’s advice covers cyber outages: a service everyone relies on can vanish overnight, so keep your own copies of important documents.
Staffordshire — Police Reprimanded for Giving Abuse Victim’s Address to Alleged Abuser
Status: Confirmed. The Information Commissioner’s Office has reprimanded Staffordshire Police after a Domestic Violence Protection Notice containing a victim’s confidential address was handed to the alleged abuser, UKNIP reports. The victim had moved several times to get away. The breach happened in March 2024 and was made public this week. If you’re keeping your address private, ask every agency directly how it will be protected on paperwork.
🛡️ National Security
Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.
UK Security News
UK — Drone Restrictions Now Cover 50 Defence Sites, 170 More Expected in December
Status: Confirmed. Restricted airspace has been applied over 50 defence sites, with a further 170 expected in December, Armed Forces Minister Louise Sandher-Jones told Parliament, the UK Defence Journal reports. Flying a drone over one of these sites without permission is unlawful. If you fly a drone, check the rules for your area before you take off.
International Security News
Iran and the US — Vance Letter May Be the Last Chance to Avoid Fresh Conflict
Status: Developing. US Vice-President JD Vance has written to Iran’s top security official offering to restart diplomacy, with a process that would open the Strait of Hormuz within seven days in return for sanctions relief, the Guardian reports. It says a reply is imminent and that hopes of avoiding a major new conflict soon after Tuesday’s US midterm elections could rest on it. Hormuz matters at home because of what it does to fuel prices, so keep your tank topped up rather than running it low.
North Korea — Around 10 Ballistic Missiles Fired Off East Coast
Status: Confirmed. North Korea fired around 10 short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast yesterday, its third launch this month, South Korea’s military said, Reuters reports. They flew about 250km from around Wonsan, ahead of Pyongyang’s end-of-month deadline to activate propaganda loudspeakers along the border with South Korea. Sky News also reported the launch. North Korea is also the state being blamed for the Binance theft above.
🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
Grimsby — Sinkhole Shuts Sutcliffe Avenue With No Reopening Date
Status: Ongoing. Sutcliffe Avenue in the Nunsthorpe area of Grimsby is closed near the Second Avenue roundabout after a void appeared in the road, Gi Grimsby News reports. North East Lincolnshire Council says it can’t yet give a timescale for repairs or reopening, and diversions are in place for drivers and buses. A hole under the road can shut a route for days with no warning, so it’s worth knowing a second way to the shops, school and work.
Orkney — Flights Cancelled After Kirkwall Air Traffic Control Closes
Status: Confirmed. Loganair flights linking Orkney with Edinburgh and Aberdeen were cancelled after air traffic control at Kirkwall Airport closed from 6pm on Wednesday, The Orcadian reports. An extra Edinburgh service was laid on yesterday afternoon to clear the backlog. For islanders, one closed control tower can mean a night away from home, so travel with your medication and a phone charger in your hand luggage.
🧑⚕️ Health & NHS Updates
England and Wales — Around 500 GP Practices Lose Websites and Online Booking
Status: Ongoing. Silicon Practice, which ran websites, online booking and consultations for around 500 practices in England, just under 10% of the total, has gone into administration, the BBC reports. Practices in London, Hertfordshire, Gloucestershire, Norfolk and Swansea are among those affected, and ITV News says Southgate Surgery in north London told patients its provider collapsed “without warning”. More than 40% of appointments are now booked online. NHS England says to contact your practice by phone or in person, and the NHS App is still working. Write your surgery’s phone number down somewhere that isn’t online, and don’t leave repeat prescription requests until the last minute.

UK — One Batch of Lercanidipine 10mg Blood Pressure Tablets Recalled
Status: Confirmed. Accord-UK is recalling batch M2510877 (expiry 11/2028, pack of 28) of Lercanidipine Hydrochloride 10mg Tablets after a sealed carton was found to contain one strip of 20mg tablets, the MHRA says. The recall is at pharmacy and wholesaler level, not patient level, and the MHRA rates the risk as low: 20mg is still within the normal dose range, and the tablets are different colours. If you take this batch and notice a different colour, or feel dizzy, get a headache or have palpitations, speak to your pharmacist or GP. Don’t stop taking your blood pressure tablets.
Central and East Africa — Ebola Outbreak Passes 10,000 Cases, UK Risk Still Low
Status: Monitoring. The Africa CDC’s director general has warned the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak could reach the UK and other countries, as total cases passed 10,000 with 4,887 deaths in DR Congo, the Guardian reports. It has spread to Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria, and there is no approved treatment, though vaccine trials are under way. UKHSA says no imported cases linked to this outbreak had been reported in the UK as of 26 October, and it assesses the risk to the UK population as low. Ebola spreads through direct contact with body fluids, not through the air. See our Special Report “Should I Be Concerned About Ebola?” first published on 19 May 2026.
🔔 Other UK Household Risk Alerts
UK — Fake Beauty Products Found to Contain Mercury, Lead and Methanol
Status: Confirmed. Four in 10 counterfeit cosmetics tested after Trading Standards seizures contained potentially harmful substances, including a skin product with 13,200 parts per million of mercury and a fake fragrance that was around 80% methanol, the Bolton News reports. A raid in Bolton uncovered £2m of fake goods. With Christmas gift shopping starting, buy from retailers you trust, because the packaging won’t tell you what’s inside.
🏭 Industrial Hazards
Yeadon, Leeds — Residents Told to Keep Windows and Doors Shut During Waste Site Fire
Status: Confirmed. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service tackled a fire at a waste transfer site on Milners Road yesterday morning, and residents were advised to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports. The nearby household recycling centre closed too. Smoke advice like this is why it pays to have a few days of food and water in, so you can stay put.
Andover and Jersey — Gas Leaks Empty Flats and Shut Roads
Status: Confirmed. All 40 flats at Clarence Court in Andover were evacuated on Tuesday after unrelated construction work damaged the gas network, the Andover Advertiser reports. In Jersey, a leak in the mains network shut St Saviour’s Hill and nearby roads, and it was only found after a member of the public smelt gas, the BBC reports. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, and keep a grab bag by the door so you can leave quickly.

🚨 Recalls
Medical
Status: Confirmed. Advanz Pharma is recalling batches 2325742 (expiry June 2027) and 2325726 (expiry May 2027) of Mynzepli 40 mg/mL solution for injection in pre-filled syringe as a precaution, because a small variation in the finger grip could affect how the medicine is given, the MHRA says. It’s given only by healthcare professionals, and patients don’t need to do anything.
💷 Cost of Living
UK — Energy Debt Relief Scheme for Up to 2.4 Million Customers Due in Spring 2027
Status: Confirmed. Ofgem and the government plan a one-off Debt Relief Scheme for people in “genuine financial need” who built up energy arrears during the 2022 to 2024 crisis, with up to 2.4 million customers potentially eligible, the York Press reports. Energy debt from that period has reached £2.47bn. Ofgem is due to consult shortly. The amount cleared will depend on customers working with their supplier, so if you’re in arrears, speak to them now rather than waiting.
🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts
Great Britain — Bluetongue Reaches 3,468 Cases This Season
Status: Ongoing. Another 23 cases of bluetongue were confirmed between 25 and 28 October (17 in England, five in Wales, one in Scotland), taking the season’s total to 3,468, the APHA says. Devon has the most with 1,291, followed by Cornwall on 373 and Somerset on 352. Another 51 possible cases are under investigation. Northern Ireland has had none.
