📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

The government’s emergency committee, Cobra, has been meeting up to twice a week over reservoirs in Sussex and the South West that could run dry within weeks under a worst-case plan prepared for ministers, so households in drought areas should keep some drinking water stored. High tides and a North Sea surge brought 15 flood warnings to coasts from Berwick to Norfolk and Hayling Island this morning, and dense fog is expected to make Thursday’s morning commute dangerous across central and southern England.

🔝 Leading Story

Sussex, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall — Cobra Meets Up to Twice a Week as Reservoirs Edge Towards “Day Zero”

Status: Developing. As previously covered (27 October), reservoirs across the South West and Sussex are critically low. What’s new is how seriously Whitehall is treating it. According to The Times, reported by The Argus, Cobra has been meeting up to twice a week about falling water levels. A secret “reasonable worst-case scenario” prepared for ministers suggests several reservoirs could reach zero capacity, known as “day zero”, within weeks. That could hit water supplies to homes, construction at Hinkley Point C and operations at HMP Exeter.

Ardingly Reservoir, which supplies about 280,000 customers across West Sussex, is at 17%. South East Water says measures already in place have pushed Whitehall’s forecast for Ardingly into next year, and it isn’t being considered for day zero in 2026. Even if a reservoir did empty, water companies would probably be able to move supplies in from other areas, but ministers remain concerned about disruption to homes served by other reservoirs.

Southern Water, South East Water and South West Water have all asked for permission to bring in non-essential use bans, which can restrict commercial car washes, the watering of sports fields and the filling of private pools. The Environment Agency has been told to prioritise public supplies around Wimbleball and Ardingly and reservoirs in west Devon and Cornwall. Government scientific advisers (SAGE) have been asked to examine the water companies’ modelling, and ministers have asked for updated lists of vulnerable residents who would get priority if supplies were disrupted. Officials estimate rainfall would need to hit 120% of the long-term average over the next six months for a full recovery. The government says customer supplies remain uninterrupted.

Storms Austen and Boelo haven’t fixed it. South West Water says much of the recent rain soaked into dry ground instead of reaching rivers, some reservoirs remain at critically low levels, and “a week of heavy rain does not undo the effects of a prolonged drought”. The hosepipe ban stays in place across its whole network.

For households in Sussex and the South West, the practical step is the same one the government’s Be Ready campaign asks of everyone: keep at least three litres of drinking water per person per day stored at home, and if anyone in your home relies on water for medical reasons, make sure you’re on your water company’s Priority Services Register.

UK-Wide — Ocado Runs Out of Tinned Soup and Bottled Water as Low-Income Families Raise Concerns

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (27 October), sales of torches and radios have jumped since the Be Ready campaign launched. Now supermarket shelves are feeling it. Several brands of soup, including Heinz and Baxters, and bottled water, including Volvic and Highland Spring, were out of stock on Ocado on Monday, reports the Evening Standard. Ocado says it is working with suppliers to restock. Iceland reports tinned food sales up more than 40% over the weekend, with a further spike in bottled water, but says its supplies “remain healthy”.

Not everyone can follow the advice in one go. The BBC spoke to a single mum on Universal Credit who said stocking up would mean cutting into her school-holiday childcare budget, and a University of Glasgow professor said the guidance could feel “insulting” to the 14 million households facing poverty. The government’s answer is that people don’t need to buy everything at once.

That’s the sensible way to do it anyway. Add one or two extra tins or a bottle of water to each normal shop and you’ll have three days covered within a few weeks, at no extra cost in any single week and with no empty shelves for anyone else. Water is the item to put first.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

Berwick, Tyne and Wear, North Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, Norfolk and Hayling Island — 15 Coastal Flood Warnings

Status: Confirmed. High astronomical tides and a large North Sea surge brought 15 flood warnings this morning, according to the Environment Agency. Flooding was expected around this morning’s high tide at Berwick-upon-Tweed and Tweedmouth, Alnmouth, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth, Newcastle Quayside and the Tyne estuary, Staithes, Whitby Harbour, Bridlington, Easington and Kilnsea, the north bank of the Humber at Hessle Haven, and Wells Quay, Salthouse and Cley on the north Norfolk coast. On the south coast, South Hayling and Eastoke seafront is warned for two hours either side of today’s 12:21 high tide. In Cumbria, Keswick Campsite remains under a warning, with lake and river levels still high after Storm Boelo. A further 42 lower-level flood alerts are in force.

If you live or park near any of these seafronts and quaysides, check the Environment Agency flood map before each high tide over the next couple of days, and move cars away from quays and harbour roads beforehand.

East Wales, Central and Southern England — Dense Fog Expected for Thursday Morning Commute

Status: Developing. After the run of storms, high pressure is building, and the BBC Weather forecast says mist and fog will form overnight into Thursday, particularly in east Wales and central and southern England. It could be dense in places, make for tricky driving through the Thursday morning rush hour and linger until lunchtime in some spots. More fog is likely across eastern and southern England over the weekend and into next week, with frosty nights possible. There is no Met Office warning in force at the time of writing.

If you’re driving early on Thursday, allow extra time, use dipped headlights (and fog lights only when visibility drops below 100 metres), and leave a much bigger gap to the car in front.

UK-Wide — Polar Vortex Could Weaken From Early November

Status: Monitoring. The polar vortex started the season stronger than usual, but some forecasts now suggest it could weaken much earlier than expected, reports HuffPost UK. Some European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts runs show a sudden stratospheric warming as soon as 6 November. The Met Office says these events can bring the UK a long spell of dry, cold weather, and they have been linked to extreme cold and snow in the past. It isn’t certain, and a warming doesn’t always reach the UK, but it’s a good reason to bleed radiators, check your boiler and make sure you have heating oil or a backup heat source before November.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Wyre, Fylde Coast and South Norfolk — Storm Boelo Outage Lasts 40 Hours as Homes Lose Their Fridge Contents

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (27 October), thousands of homes were still without power after Storm Boelo. In Out Rawcliffe in Wyre, Lancashire, residents were cut off from 8pm on Sunday until 1.30pm on Tuesday after a branch was blown into an overhead line, reports the Blackpool Gazette. Residents described throwing away the entire contents of their fridges, one losing well over £100 of food. Power is back in Out Rawcliffe and Pilling, but hundreds across Wyre and the Fylde coast were still waiting, with Electricity North West offering free welfare support.

In south Norfolk, UK Power Networks switched off power to 1,706 homes around Tivetshall St Mary, Bunwell, Forncett St Peter and Hempnall on Tuesday morning after a low overhead line raised safety concerns, reports the EDP. If you see a low or fallen power line, stay at least 10 metres away and call 105.

During a long outage, keep the fridge and freezer doors shut: a full freezer keeps food frozen for around 48 hours (about 24 if half full), and a fridge stays cold for about four hours. After that, eat what’s perishable first and fall back on the cupboard.

💧 Water & Utilities

Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire — Burst Main Disrupts Supplies for a Second Day

Status: Ongoing. A burst water main disrupted supplies in Milngavie and the wider G62 area for a second day on Tuesday, following a similar burst on Monday, reports the Glasgow Times. Scottish Water expected repairs to be finished by late Tuesday morning. Two bursts in two days is a reminder that a few bottles of stored water cover you for exactly this sort of short, unannounced interruption.

🔒 Cyber Security

Wales — Test Account Using “Password1” Led to Breach of 3,300 People’s Data, Mostly Children

Status: Confirmed. The Information Commissioner’s Office has reprimanded Ogi Networks and Data Cymru, the Welsh local government data unit, after a cyberattack exposed the information of 3,300 people, most of them children, reports Cybernews. Attackers encrypted 182.7GB of data after getting in through a test account called “Test2”, created in 2012 with the password “Password1”, which stayed active or was reactivated for over 12 years. The ICO is urging organisations to remove unused accounts, block weak passwords and use multi-factor authentication. The same applies at home: old accounts you no longer use are a way in, so close them, and switch on two-step verification for email and banking.

📻 Emergency Alerts & Communications Infrastructure

Western Isles, Lake District and West Country — MPs Warn Digital Landline Switch Could Leave People Unable to Call for Help

Status: Developing. Operators aim to finish replacing the copper landline network with internet-based phone lines by the end of January, and MPs from remote areas have told security minister Dan Jarvis this could leave people unable to call for help in an emergency, reports the BBC. The old copper network works in a power cut; digital landlines don’t, because they depend on a powered router. Openreach has been giving battery packs to vulnerable customers that keep a phone going for an hour or more, but the Western Isles MP said this was “simply not adequate” when mobile masts also fail in storms. Jarvis, who is leading the Be Ready campaign, said concerns would be raised at a government resilience summit in Cornwall next month.

If your landline is now digital, it will go dead in a power cut. Keep a charged power bank for your mobile, agree with a neighbour how you’d raise the alarm for each other, and if someone in your home relies on a telecare alarm, ask your provider what battery backup it has.

UK Security News

Londonderry — “Viable” Explosive Device Delivered to Hotel

Status: Confirmed. A suspicious package delivered to a hotel at Ebrington Square in Londonderry on Tuesday afternoon contained a viable explosive device, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has said, reports the BBC. Army bomb experts carried out a controlled explosion and a number of people were evacuated from the hotel and neighbouring premises. Police described it as a “reckless and targeted attack”. If you’re ever asked to evacuate during a security alert, go straight away, take only what you’re carrying, and follow police directions on where to wait.

RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire — Court Told Plot Was Directed by Handler Working for Iran

Status: Developing. Two men have appeared in court charged under the National Security Act over the incident at RAF Fairford on 27 September, and prosecutors said a group of men had been directed to drive vans loaded with petrol to the base by a handler known as “Ali”, who police believe was working on behalf of Iran, reports The Guardian. Mohmed Abdulkarim, 24, is charged with assisting a foreign intelligence service, and Nouman Essghir, 24, with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK. Both are due at the Old Bailey on 20 November, and five other men remain on police bail.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

Redhill to Tonbridge — Line Closed Until 1 November for Landslip Repairs

Status: Confirmed. The railway between Redhill in Surrey and Tonbridge in Kent is closed until 1 November so Network Rail can stabilise an embankment near Godstone, reports the BBC. Engineers are driving 208 sheet piles into a 126-metre stretch. Rail replacement buses serve Tonbridge, Leigh, Penshurst, Edenbridge, Godstone, Nutfield and Redhill, and there are no trains between Tonbridge and Wadhurst either because of separate upgrade work. The same line was shut for two weeks in 2024 after a landslip that Network Rail blamed on one of the wettest winters on record. Wet-to-dry swings are hard on old embankments, so expect more of these closures over the winter.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

UK-Wide — MS Pain Drug Out of Stock Until December as Medicine Shortages Climb to 157

Status: Confirmed. Nabilone, used by some people with multiple sclerosis to manage pain, is out of stock with wholesalers across the UK and isn’t expected back until December, reports the BBC. One patient in Coleraine said she has spent most of her time in bed since running out. The reason for the disruption hasn’t been given. More widely, the industry tracker MIMS says the number of drugs in short supply reached 157 this week, up from 107 in January. If you take a regular prescription, order your repeat as soon as you’re allowed rather than in the last few days, and ask your pharmacist early if a medicine has been hard to get, so there’s time to find an alternative.

Marchwood, New Forest — Three Treated and Homes Evacuated After Gas Main Ruptures

Status: Confirmed. Fire crews were called to a ruptured gas main on Hythe Road in Marchwood at around 12.30pm on Tuesday, reports the Daily Echo. A safety cordon was set up, nearby homes were evacuated and three people were treated, before Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue handed over to SGN engineers. If you ever smell gas, don’t use light switches or anything that could spark, open doors and windows, turn off the meter if it’s safe to, get out and call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999.

UK-Wide — MHRA October Safety Roundup: New Warnings in Antidepressant Leaflets

Status: Confirmed. The MHRA has published its October safety roundup. The main item is new safety measures for everyone taking antidepressants: a new boxed warning in the patient leaflet, a new patient card and, from 2027, an extra safety leaflet, covering the risk of suicidal thoughts and of sexual dysfunction that can continue after stopping some antidepressants. The MHRA stresses these aren’t new risks. Don’t stop taking your medicine without speaking to your doctor first, and if you have new or worsening suicidal thoughts, especially when starting or changing the dose, seek urgent help through NHS 111, your local crisis team or Samaritans on 116 123.

💷 Cost of Living

UK-Wide — Budget Today Expected to Freeze Fuel Duty and Start Work on Cutting Energy Bills

Status: Developing. Chancellor John Healey delivers his first Budget today, and he has promised “breathing space” on everyday costs and long-term action to cut energy bills “for good”, reports WalesOnline. Expected measures include cancelling January’s planned fuel duty rise, keeping it frozen at 52p a litre, cutting tariffs on popular foods including beans, and a near-4% rise in the minimum wage. The Prime Minister has asked for the gas standing charge to be looked at, and the Times reports that green levies could be moved off energy bills and onto general taxation. Treat these as expected until the Chancellor confirms them this afternoon.

🏦 Banking & Finance

UK — Five-Year Government Borrowing Costs Highest Since 2008

Status: Confirmed. The Debt Management Office sold £4.5bn of five-year government debt on Tuesday at an average yield of 5.036%, the highest since 2008, reports The Guardian. Five-year gilt yields feed into the pricing of five-year fixed mortgages, so anyone remortgaging soon should watch how markets react to today’s Budget before locking in a deal.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ In Sussex or the South West, store at least three litres of drinking water per person per day for three days
  • ☑️ Coastal homes in the North East, Yorkshire, Norfolk and Hayling Island: check the flood map before each high tide and move cars off quaysides
  • ☑️ Allow extra time for Thursday’s morning drive and use dipped headlights in fog
  • ☑️ Build your three-day supplies gradually: one or two extra items per shop
  • ☑️ If your landline is digital, keep a charged power bank for your mobile
  • ☑️ Order repeat prescriptions as early as you’re allowed

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

Fill a few clean plastic bottles from the tap today, label them with the date, and put them at the back of a cupboard. Tap water stored this way in a cool, dark place is fine to drink for around six months, and it costs next to nothing.
