📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Around 22,600 homes and businesses are still without power after Storm Boelo, and a fresh yellow wind warning covers much of Scotland until 9pm tonight, with gusts of 70mph or more possible in the far north and the Hebrides. Retailers report torch sales up 284% and radio sales nearly doubled since the government’s Be Ready call, so if your own kit isn’t sorted yet, a torch, spare batteries and a charged power bank are the place to start today.

🔝 Leading Story

Scotland, Cumbria and Northern England — 22,600 Properties Still Without Power as New Wind Warning Hits Scotland

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (26 October), Storm Boelo cut power to around 90,000 properties. The BBC reports the Energy Networks Association now puts the figure still off at around 22,600, and its chief executive Leo Slade said repairs were being held back because engineers can’t safely replace poles and wires until the wind drops. Some Scottish schools stayed shut on Monday because of no power, heating or water, and one Cumbria business owner said he expected to be without power until Tuesday evening.

The Met Office has a yellow wind warning in force from 3am to 9pm today across much of Scotland, including Central, Tayside and Fife and Grampian, and fringing the north of Northern Ireland. Gusts of 50 to 60mph are possible quite widely, with 70mph or more in exposed parts of the far north and north-west, most likely over the Hebrides. The Met Office warns of possible power cuts that could also knock out mobile phone coverage, and says the wind will ease from the south-west later today, with the far north last to calm down.

Households still waiting to be reconnected, or in today’s warning area, should keep torches and a charged power bank to hand, and call 105 to report a power cut or get an update from their network operator.

🏛️ Government Preparedness & Resilience Policy

UK-Wide — Torch Sales Up 284% and Radio Sales Nearly Double After Be Ready Call

Status: Confirmed. Figures obtained by BBC Newsnight show households acting on the government’s Be Ready campaign, which launched last week (22 October). Iceland saw a 40% rise in sales of tinned products over the weekend, Robert Dyas sold 160% more radios than the week before, and Maplin said torch sales rose 284%, radio sales 92% and power bank sales 106% compared with the same period last month. Iceland said its supplies “remain healthy”, so there’s no need to buy in bulk: a few extra tins each shop builds the three days’ supply the government is asking for.

FosPower Emergency Radio

Most emergency radios have one or two power options. The FosPower has four, and that redundancy is the single most important feature for preparedness use.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

Renfrew — Flood Barrier Wasn’t Used as the Clyde Flooded Streets

Status: Confirmed. Renfrewshire Council has confirmed its multi-million pound flood barrier was not in use when water from the River Clyde spilled into Renfrew on Saturday night, flooding bars, restaurants, gyms and homes around Ferry Road, according to the Glasgow Times. Flood defences only help if they’re deployed in time, so if you live near a river or the coast, have your own plan rather than relying on them.

See our Special Report “Flood Chiefs Issue Winter Warning: Is Your Flood Plan Ready?” first published on 12 October 2026.

Wirral, Cumbria and the South Coast — Two Flood Warnings and Seven Flood Alerts

Status: Ongoing. The Environment Agency has flood warnings in force for the Irish Sea at New Brighton on the Wirral and for Keswick Campsite in Cumbria. Flood alerts cover Portsmouth, Christchurch Harbour, Weymouth Harbour, West Bay Harbour, Climping Seafront, the Tidal Fal Estuary in Cornwall and the Wye Estuary in Gloucestershire. If you’re in a warning area, move valuables and vehicles to higher ground and keep away from flood water on roads and promenades.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

UK-Wide — Government Considers Backing Electric Cars That Can Power Homes

Status: Developing. Ministers are considering incentives for carmakers to fit “vehicle to grid” technology, which lets an electric car charge when power is cheap and send some back at peak times, as part of a review of the zero-emission vehicle mandate, reports the Guardian. The same technology can also power the driver’s own home, which could one day make an EV a useful backup during a power cut, though nothing has been decided yet.

💧 Water & Utilities

Somerset, Devon, Dorset, Cornwall and Sussex — Reservoirs Still Critically Low in Severe Drought

Status: Ongoing. Wimbleball Reservoir, which supplies around 300,000 customers across Somerset, Devon and Dorset, has fallen to 16% of capacity against roughly 75% normally expected at this time of year, reports the South West Farmer. In Sussex, Ardingly Reservoir had dropped to 17% as of 18 October, according to SussexWorld. Parts of Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, East Sussex and West Sussex have been in severe drought since 15 October. There’s better news in north-west Wales, where Natural Resources Wales has moved North Gwynedd, Ynys Môn and South Gwynedd into drought recovery after weeks of rain. Even after the recent storms, the south-west and Sussex aren’t out of the woods, so it’s worth keeping a few days of stored water at home.

UK Security News

England and Wales — Police and Fire Services “Not Fully Prepared” for Cyberattacks

Status: Confirmed. A new report from HMICFRS, the policing and fire inspectorate, warns that police forces and fire and rescue services urgently need to protect their systems. Every organisation inspected still relies to some extent on legacy computer systems, which leaders named as their biggest cybersecurity risk, and inspectors also raised concerns about third-party suppliers holding sensitive police data. Inspector Michelle Skeer said a major cyberattack “is not a hypothetical scenario”. If 999 call handling or force systems were ever knocked out, the advice is still to call 999 in an emergency, but it’s a reminder to keep key local numbers written down on paper.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

Motherwell — Milton Street Closed for Three Weeks Over Building Collapse Fears

Status: Ongoing. North Lanarkshire Council brought in an emergency closure of Milton Street, between the A721 Muir Street and Roman Road, on Sunday as severe weather hit the area, over fears a dangerous building could collapse, and it’s expected to stay shut for three weeks, reports Motherwell Times. A diversion is in place, so allow extra time for local journeys.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

England — Consultants to Strike on 25 and 26 November

Status: Confirmed. Senior doctors in England will strike for two days from 6.59am on Wednesday 25 November in a dispute over pay and pensions, with consultants providing emergency cover only, after 76% of those who voted in a British Medical Association ballot backed action, reports the York Press. If you have a hospital appointment on those dates, expect to be contacted if it’s moved, and make sure regular prescriptions are topped up well beforehand.

London and England — Covid Cases Rising as Temperatures Fall

Status: Monitoring. UK Health Security Agency data shows reported Covid cases in England rose from 1,374 in August to 4,589 in September, and average positive PCR results across London peaked at about 12% in early October, reports the Evening Standard. Islington, Camden and Barnet showed higher positivity rates, though Islington council says it isn’t an outlier. Anyone eligible for an autumn vaccine should book it, and stay home if you’re unwell where you can.

🚨 Recalls

Medical

Xeal Pharma — Clopidogrel Oral Suspension and Oral Solution (All Strengths)

Status: Confirmed. The MHRA has issued a Class 2 medicines recall (EL(26)A/43) after Xeal Pharma reported that all strengths of its clopidogrel oral suspension and oral solution contain less than the labelled amount of clopidogrel. These liquid versions are used by people who can’t swallow tablets. Don’t stop taking clopidogrel: speak to your pharmacist or GP about a replacement supply.

Consumer Products

Asda — Three Camera and Phone Bags Recalled Over Phthalate Levels

Status: Confirmed. Asda is recalling three bags after testing found phthalates above the legal limit, reports The Northern Echo: the burgundy quilted nylon camera bag (barcode 5059206287215), the zebra nylon phone bag (barcode 5059206286553) and the brown quilted nylon camera bag (barcode 5059206962396), sold for £8 to £12.50. No incidents have been reported. Return the bag to any Asda store for a full refund, no receipt needed, or call Asda Customer Relations on 0330 053 0111.

💷 Cost of Living

UK-Wide — Shop Price Inflation Hits Highest Level Since 2024

Status: Confirmed. The British Retail Consortium says shop price inflation rose to 2.1% in October from 1.4% in September, with food inflation up to 2.9% and non-food prices more than doubling to 1.7%, as retailers start passing on higher energy and ingredient costs, reports the Guardian. Buying a few store-cupboard staples now, before prices climb further, does double duty as your emergency food supply.

UK-Wide — Tariffs Removed on Kerosene and 100+ Everyday Products Ahead of Budget

Status: Confirmed. Import tariffs are being removed on more than 100 products including kerosene for households reliant on heating oil, fertiliser, garlic, marmalade and cough drops, which the government says could save households up to £21 a year alongside earlier tariff suspensions, reports the BBC. The BBC also understands fuel duty will be frozen again in Wednesday’s Budget, with the 5p discount continuing.

UK and Europe — Wholesale Gas Prices Hit Four-Year High

Status: Developing. The UK month-ahead gas contract rose 4% to 240p a therm on Monday, its highest level since December 2022, as colder weather across Europe and fears of further Middle East supply disruption pushed prices up, reports the Guardian. Wholesale rises feed into future price caps rather than this month’s bills, but it’s a good time to sort draught-proofing and other low-cost ways to keep warm with the heating turned down.

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

Charge every power bank in the house today and then put them somewhere you’ll remember. A fully charged power bank slowly loses charge over the months, so pick one day a month (the first of the month works well) to top them all up, and you’ll never find a flat one when the lights go out.
