📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

More UK food businesses have now been caught up in the fridge and freezer hacks that hit supermarkets across Europe this week, including an organic food firm and a London fruit and vegetable wholesaler, and the count of affected countries has reached at least 11. The national impact in the UK is still described as minimal, but the attacks show how fast chilled and frozen food can be put at risk somewhere along the supply chain. Keeping some food at home that doesn’t need a fridge or freezer is the simple answer.

🔝 Leading Story

UK and Europe — Fridge Hacks Hit More UK Food Firms, 11 Countries Now Affected

Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (3 November), British meat suppliers had their fridges tampered with after the attacks on European supermarkets. More UK victims have now come forward, the Guardian reports. Langridge Organic said hackers set a number of its units to defrost for more than four hours at 150°C, but staff stepped in before any stock was damaged. A fruit and vegetable wholesaler in London stopped an attack by pulling its cold stores’ internet connection out at the wall.

The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers says some of its more than 300 members were hit. One supplier’s cold units rose to as high as 100°C, but the units affected were empty at the time and no meat was lost. The National Cyber Security Centre says it’s working with the companies involved and that the national impact is “minimal” for now. Its chief executive described the attacks as the “foothills” of a bigger threat. Researchers who set up decoy fridge controllers found that most break-in attempts simply used the makers’ published factory-default passwords.

Across Europe, Germany and Romania have now also reported supermarkets being hit, which takes the total to at least 11 countries, Al Jazeera reports. The EU says the attacks are “not isolated” and is working on a joint response. No one has claimed responsibility.

No UK supermarket chain has been directly affected so far. But it’s a clear reminder that chilled and frozen food can be lost before it ever reaches the shelves. A small store of food that doesn’t need a fridge or freezer keeps working whatever happens to the cold chain. See our Special Report “We Are One Button Away” first published on 4 July 2026.

💰 Scams

UK — Fake “Found Pet” Photos Made With AI

Status: Confirmed. Fraudsters are using AI-generated pictures of missing pets to demand reward money from their owners, BBC News reports. One Birmingham owner was sent a convincing fake image of her missing cat, then asked for 100 Apple gift cards, and was threatened that the cat would be “sold or murdered” when she questioned it. If someone claims to have found your pet, ask to see the animal in person or on a live video call before any money changes hands. Never pay in gift cards.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Calderdale and St Helens — Unplanned Power Cuts Hit Hundreds of Postcodes

Status: Confirmed. An unplanned power cut hit more than 200 postcodes in the HX4 area of Calderdale on Tuesday, including Stainland, Holywell Green and West Vale, the Halifax Courier reports. In St Helens, more than 70 postcodes in WA10, including Eccleston, lost power from just after 7am until after 9am, the St Helens Star says. It’s the latest of several cuts there in recent months. Short, unplanned outages like these are the most common kind, and a torch, a charged power bank and a way to boil water cover most of them.

💧 Water & Utilities

South West — Reservoirs Rising, but the Hosepipe Ban Stays

Status: Ongoing. Every reservoir in the South West is now on an “upward trajectory” after recent rain, rising by between 2% and 15%, South West Water’s drought resilience director told BBC News. Venford is now 50% full and Wimbleball on Exmoor has climbed to 18%, after a record low of 12% in August. There’s still no end date for the hosepipe ban, because a lot more rain is needed.

Devon County Council still describes the county’s water supply as being in “crisis”, The Independent reports. It warns that if things get worse, some homes could temporarily lose their piped water. That would hit hardest for people who need water for medical or personal care, or who can’t easily collect and carry water. People in that position can sign up to the free Priority Services Register. See our Special Report “Why Is There a Hosepipe Ban?” first published on 8 August 2026.

Birmingham and Huntingdon — Burst Pipes Cut Supplies and Close a Road

Status: Confirmed. Homes in the B14 area of Birmingham, which covers Kings Heath, had no supply, poor pressure or discoloured water from Monday evening into Tuesday after a burst pipe on a private network, the Express and Star reports. Severn Trent is carrying out the repair. In Huntingdon, St Peter’s Road was shut on Tuesday morning after a suspected burst water main, with Anglian Water at the scene, according to The Hunts Post. A few bottles of stored water at home cover you while repairs like these are done.

🔒 Cyber Security

UK — Group of Schools Hit by Ransomware With Signs of AI Help

Status: Confirmed. A ransomware gang encrypted about 37 machines across a group of UK schools in September, and researchers say an AI model appears to have done much of the repetitive work, Cyber Security News reports, citing analysis by Bitdefender. The attackers, using the 3AM ransomware, stole passwords from the schools’ backup servers, set up fake admin accounts with names chosen to blend in, such as “library”, and took 40 finance files before encrypting the network and deleting backups as they went. Bitdefender stresses this is one case, not yet a trend, but expects attacks like it to become more common in 2027. It’s the kind of AI-assisted attack the NCSC warned about this week, and a reminder to keep backups of your own important files somewhere a hacked account can’t reach, such as an unplugged external drive.

🛡️ National Security

Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.

UK Security News

Shetland — Calls for Stronger Defence Over Russian Boats Near Undersea Cables

Status: Developing. Calls are growing for the defence of Shetland to be strengthened after more sightings of Russian trawlers off the Scottish coast, BBC News reports. Analysis cited by the BBC found more than 500 incidents of Russian boats sitting above the undersea cables that link Britain with Europe and the US. Those cables carry most of the UK’s telecoms data abroad. Shetland has lived through this before: it was cut off from the mainland when a subsea cable was damaged in 2022, and there were two more cable breaks there last year. A battery or wind-up radio still gets you news when phone and internet links go down. See our Special Report “Is Russia a Threat to the UK?” first published on 26 July 2026.

Heathrow and Manchester — Hoax Bomb Threats Against Flights Across Europe

Status: Developing. Seven flights at airports across Europe were searched on Tuesday after a series of suspected bomb threats, and two of them had taken off from the UK, one from Heathrow and one from Manchester, BBC News reports. The UK government called them “malicious hoax threats”. It came a day after a Wizz Air flight from London Luton to Sofia made an emergency landing in Budapest after a similar threat, the Evening Standard reported. European airspace is on high alert while authorities work out whether the threats were co-ordinated. If you’re flying soon, allow extra time and keep medication and essentials in your hand luggage in case of a long delay or diversion.

Canning Town, London — Residents of Five Buildings Evacuated Over Structural Fears

Status: Ongoing. People living in five buildings on the Caxton Works/Royal Gateway development in Canning Town have been evacuated over structural safety concerns, Housing Today reports, and Newham Council has ordered “immediate” works on three of the towers. The buildings were finished in 2018. Leaving home at short notice is much easier with a grab bag already packed with medication, documents, chargers and a change of clothes.

🚢 Supply Chain

UK — Dry Weather Takes the Rice Out of Rice Krispies

Status: Confirmed. Kellogg’s has stopped using rice grains in Rice Krispies and Coco Pops in the UK and switched to corn flour and rice flour, BBC News reports. Dry weather in key rice-growing countries in Asia has cut harvests and pushed up prices. The packs will now carry a “contains wheat gluten” warning, which matters for anyone in the household who avoids gluten. It’s a small, everyday sign of how a poor harvest on the other side of the world ends up changing what’s on UK shelves.

Long-term food storage

💷 Cost of Living

UK — Ofgem to Get Powers Over Energy Brokers

Status: Confirmed. Energy brokers and price comparison services will come under Ofgem’s control for the first time through the energy independence bill, being introduced today, the Guardian reports. Ofgem will be able to order compensation, fine and ban rogue operators that have pushed businesses and households into overpriced contracts, and limit bosses’ bonuses when suppliers break the rules. The government expects it to save businesses more than £100m a year in hidden commissions.

Scotland — Charities Warn a Third of Scots Face a Freeze-or-Debt Choice

Status: Developing. A coalition of 20 organisations has warned that a third of Scots will have to choose between freezing and falling into debt when the energy price cap rises in January, the Herald reports. The groups want the Scottish Government to bring back the Home Heating Support Fund before winter and to give targeted help to rural and island households.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

Scottish Borders — Bird Flu Confirmed in Poultry Near Biggar

Status: Confirmed. Highly pathogenic bird flu was confirmed in commercial poultry near Biggar on 2 November, according to DEFRA and APHA. A 3km protection zone and 10km surveillance zone are in place, and all poultry on the site will be culled. It’s the third UK poultry case of the 2026 to 2027 season. Anyone keeping birds nearby should check the disease zone map for the rules that apply to them.

Great Britain — Worst Bluetongue Season on Record

Status: Confirmed. There have been 3,472 bluetongue cases in England, Scotland and Wales since July, more than five times the previous three seasons put together, MPs on the EFRA committee heard on Tuesday, the Guardian reports. Vets and the NFU told the committee that doubts about how well the vaccine worked, its cost to farmers and slow sharing of results all held back vaccination, Farmers Guide reports. Farmers have lost animals, milk, growth and breeding.

🏦 Banking & Finance

UK — Barclays First Big Lender to Offer Car Finance Payouts

Status: Confirmed. Barclays will this month start offering “early settlement” compensation to tens of thousands of people who’ve complained about mis-sold car loans, the Guardian reports. Some people who accept could get the money before Christmas. Offers must at least match what the FCA’s £9.1bn compensation scheme would pay. That scheme is still being challenged in court, though, so anyone who turns an offer down and waits could end up with more, less or nothing.

✅ Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ Check you have a few days of food that doesn’t need a fridge or freezer
  • ☑️ Know how long your freezer stays cold with the door shut if it fails
  • ☑️ In Devon and the South West, keep following the hosepipe ban and store some drinking water
  • ☑️ If you rely on water or power for medical needs, sign up to the Priority Services Register
  • ☑️ Never pay a “found pet” reward without seeing the animal first, and never in gift cards
  • ☑️ Keep a torch and a charged power bank where you can find them in the dark

💡 UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

If your freezer stops working, keep the door shut. A full freezer usually keeps food frozen for around 48 hours, and a half-full one for about a day, so a closed door buys you time to sort things out. Filling empty space with bottles of water helps a freezer hold its cold for longer, and gives you extra drinking water if the taps ever go off.
