📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

A British healthcare worker who caught Ebola in DR Congo is being flown back to the UK for treatment in a specialist isolation unit, and the government says the risk to the public remains low. Tonight is Bonfire Night, with a chilly, foggy evening in places, so fire crews are asking people to go to organised displays and to soak used fireworks before binning them. At noon the Bank of England is expected to raise interest rates for the first time in more than three years.

🔝 Leading Story

UK — British Healthcare Worker With Ebola Being Flown Home for Treatment

Status: Developing. A British citizen working in the Democratic Republic of Congo has tested positive for Ebola and is being brought back to the UK, BBC News reports. It’s the first case of a UK national catching the virus in the current outbreak. A government spokesperson said the UK has “well-established procedures for dealing with cases like this” which have now been activated, and that “the risk to the UK public from Ebola remains low.”

The patient is a healthcare worker sent out by a humanitarian organisation to help with the response, and is in a stable condition, according to an official document seen by Reuters and reported by The Guardian. They’re expected to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday and go by specialist ambulance to a “high consequence” infectious disease unit. The Royal Free in London has the UK’s high-level isolation unit, with other centres in Newcastle and Liverpool.

The DR Congo outbreak, declared in May, has passed 10,000 cases and 5,000 deaths, and has spread to Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria. Ebola spreads through direct contact with the body fluids of someone who is ill, such as blood or vomit. There have only been four confirmed cases in the UK since 1976, and none led to a death. For a household, there’s nothing to do differently today: this is a planned, controlled transfer of one patient. ⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Oswestry and Bellshill — Unplanned Power Cuts and an Underground Cable Fault

Status: Confirmed. An unexpected power cut hit nine postcodes in the SY11 area of Oswestry on Wednesday afternoon, around Hazel Grove and as far south as Shrewsbury Road, the Border Counties Advertizer reports. SP Energy Networks expected to have power back by early evening. In Bellshill, North Lanarkshire, SP Energy Networks had to switch off the power to parts of the ML4 area at noon so engineers could repair an underground cable fault on Rosewood Avenue, says Motherwell Today. Residents were told to switch off and unplug appliances, including boilers, until it came back on. That’s good practice in any outage, because it protects them from a surge when the power returns. A charged power bank keeps your phone going while you wait.

🌳 Environmental Hazards

Poole and North Yorkshire — Heath and Forest Fires in November

Status: Ongoing. Fourteen fire engines were sent to a blaze on Canford Heath nature reserve in Poole on Wednesday evening, covering around 2.5 acres of heath, ITV News reports. Crews came from Poole, Christchurch, Ferndown, Wareham, Wimborne, Swanage, Ringwood and beyond, and people were asked to stay off the heath. Greatest Hits Radio said early on Thursday that crews were still working to bring it under control, with no injuries or evacuations reported. Earlier on Wednesday, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue used a specialist amphibious all-terrain vehicle to put out a forest fire in Wykeham Forest near Scarborough, the York Press reports. Fires like these in November show how dry some heathland still is after this year’s drought. If you live next to heath or forest, don’t burn garden waste or let off fireworks near it tonight. See our Special Report “UK Wildfire Risk” first published on 30 June 2026.

💧 Water & Utilities

Glasgow — Emergency Repairs Bring “Brown Water” Warning in G33

Status: Confirmed. Scottish Water carried out emergency repairs on its network on Wednesday that could affect supplies in the G33 area of north-east Glasgow, the Glasgow Times reports. Some homes may get brown or white water. If yours is brown, Scottish Water says to run the cold kitchen tap at reduced pressure until it runs clear, without using any other taps or water appliances at the same time. White water is just trapped air and should clear within 24 to 48 hours. A few bottles of stored water mean you can still drink and cook while the supply settles down.

🔒 Cyber Security

France — Hackers Turn Up the Heat in Blood Bank Cold Stores

Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (4 November), the fridge and freezer hacks that hit supermarkets across Europe had reached more UK food firms. They have now hit medical supplies too. France’s national blood service, the EFS, says hackers got into the control systems of three cold stores holding blood products and raised the temperature and defrost settings to “very high levels”, The Guardian reports. Alarms let technicians step in before any products were damaged. The EFS supplies more than 1,900 hospitals. Two Russian hacktivist groups have claimed online that they hacked a system used in the attacks, but analysts say Iranian groups, state hackers or even pranksters can’t be ruled out, according to BBC News. NCSC chief Richard Horne has called the attacks “just the foothills”, Reuters reports, and has warned that AI will make old, unpatched weaknesses like these far easier to find and exploit at scale. See our Special Report “We Are One Button Away” first published on 4 July 2026.

Bristol — 320,000 Files From Schools Hack Published on the Dark Web

Status: Confirmed. More than 320,000 files stolen in September’s cyber attack on Bristol City Council’s Trading with Schools platform have been found on the dark web, BBC News reports. The data came from 39 Bristol schools that use the system for things like staff records, scheduling and payroll. The council says it can’t yet confirm exactly what the published data contains, and head teachers are sending guidance to families. If your child goes to an affected school, watch for emails, texts or calls that use school details to seem genuine, and check anything that asks for payment or personal details with the school directly.

🛡️ National Security

Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.

UK Security News

Belfast — Explosive Devices Linked to “Extreme Right-Wing Terrorism”

Status: Developing. The Police Service of Northern Ireland says its investigation into explosive devices found in Belfast at the weekend is linked to “extreme right-wing terrorism”, BBC News reports. A 35-year-old man has been charged and remanded in custody. He’s accused of having 17 improvised explosive devices, two detonators and five stun guns, seized in searches on the Shankill Road and Edwina Street. Some residents had to leave their homes as a precaution during the security operation. If police ever ask you to evacuate at short notice, a grab bag by the door with medication, phone charger and documents saves a lot of stress.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

France — Nationwide Strike Today Hits Rail, Ports and Air Traffic Control

Status: Confirmed. Unions in France have called a nationwide strike for Thursday, expected to include rail staff, air traffic control, hospital workers and teachers, The Guardian reports. SNCF says regional train lines and parts of the greater Paris area will be disrupted, and dockers say there’ll be disruption at French ports. If you’re flying to or over France today, or crossing the Channel, check with your airline or ferry operator before you set off.

🔔 Other UK Household Risk Alerts

UK — Bonfire Night: Cold, Foggy in Places, and Busy for Fire Crews

Status: Confirmed. Tonight should be dry for most but chilly, with temperatures falling into mid-single figures, a touch of frost in sheltered northern spots and fog forming in places overnight, says BBC Weather. Watch for fog if you’re driving home late.

Fire crews are asking people to go to an organised display rather than setting off fireworks at home. County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, which had 91 callouts last Bonfire Night, says used fireworks should cool for at least 30 minutes, then be soaked in a bucket of cold water for 24 hours before being double-bagged and put in general waste, never the recycling, the Northern Echo reports. Never go back to a firework that hasn’t gone off. Bring your wheelie bins in too, because they’re often stolen or set alight tonight.

In Scotland, up to 1,700 police officers could be deployed and officers will travel with fire crews to protect them from attacks, in the country’s biggest police operation since last summer, BBC News reports. Extra public order vehicles are coming from 18 police forces in England and Wales.

🚨 Recalls

Food

Rubicon Yuzu & Pink Grapefruit Cartons — Undeclared Sulphites. Status: Confirmed. AG Barr is recalling 1L cartons of Rubicon Yuzu & Pink Grapefruit because they may contain sulphites that aren’t listed on the label, the Food Standards Agency says. Affected batch codes are 6160 (best before June 2027), 6198 (July 2027), 6219 (August 2027) and 6257 (September 2027). If you’re sensitive to sulphur dioxide or sulphites, don’t drink it, and return it to where you bought it for a full refund.

Medical

Field Safety Notices, 26 to 30 October. Status: Confirmed. The MHRA has published its weekly list of manufacturers’ field safety notices. Most cover hospital equipment, but the list includes a notice for Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 app, which many people with diabetes use at home with their glucose sensor. If you use it, look out for any message from Abbott and contact them with any questions.

💷 Cost of Living

Scotland — Dairy Firm Warns Food Prices Will Rise Again

Status: Confirmed. Stirlingshire-based Graham’s The Family Dairy has warned that new rises in energy, fuel and packaging costs are likely to push up food prices, the Herald reports. The company says it faces several million pounds of extra costs a year. Buying a few extra long-life basics now, while prices are where they are, is an easy way to cushion it.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

England — Cattle TB Vaccine Targeted for 2030

Status: Confirmed. The government has formally adopted a new Bovine TB Control Strategy aiming for England to be TB-free by 2038, Farmers Guide reports. It sets a target to roll out a cattle vaccine by 2030, with a test that can tell infected animals from vaccinated ones, and badger vaccination in priority areas. No badgers have been culled for TB in 2026, the first year without a cull in more than a decade. New herd breakdowns fell to 3.4% in June, down from 4.2% a year earlier, but 20,244 cattle were still culled in England in the year to June.

🏦 Banking & Finance

UK — Interest Rates Expected to Rise at Noon

Status: Developing. The Bank of England is expected to raise interest rates from 3.75% to 4% at 12:00 today, its first rise since August 2023, BBC News reports. Inflation was 3.5% in September, pushed up mainly by petrol and diesel prices. The 510,000 people on tracker mortgages would see an immediate rise of about £31 a month on a typical loan, according to UK Finance. The 470,000 on variable deals would wait for their lender to decide, typically around £14 a month more. Fixed-rate deals don’t change straight away, but new deals already average 5.96% for two years and 5.99% for five. Savers could see better rates.

☑️ Quick Risk Summary — Next 48 Hours

  • ☑️ Going out tonight? Choose an organised display, wrap up warm and allow for fog if you’re driving home.
  • ☑️ Fireworks at home: soak used ones in a bucket of water for 24 hours before binning, and bring your wheelie bin in.
  • ☑️ Check your fridge for Rubicon Yuzu & Pink Grapefruit cartons if anyone at home is sensitive to sulphites.
  • ☑️ On a tracker or variable mortgage? Check this afternoon’s rate decision and what it means for your payment.
  • ☑️ Bristol school families: be wary of messages that use school details to ask for money or personal information.
  • ☑️ Flying or sailing via France today? Check with your airline or ferry operator first.

💡 UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

If you’re having a garden bonfire or fireworks tonight, put a full bucket of water and a garden hose (or a second bucket) next to it before you light anything. It’s the same bucket you’ll need afterwards to soak the spent fireworks, it costs nothing, and it means a stray spark on a fence or shed can be dealt with in seconds instead of minutes.
