Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Wales has activated crisis management arrangements for wildfires burning across the north and south with no helicopter water-bombing support available anywhere in the UK, and residents near Rhinogydd and Blaenavon are being told to keep windows and doors shut against the smoke. River levels are nearing record lows as an environmental drought declaration looms for Wales, while hosepipe bans now cover more than 8 million households across England. Check today’s FSA recall on Graham’s Family Dairy semi-skimmed milk before your next shop, and expect fuel costs to keep climbing as Houthi attacks on Red Sea tankers widen the Middle East conflict.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

UK-wide — No active warnings

Status: Confirmed. The Met Office has no severe weather warnings in place for the UK today. Conditions remain dry, hot and settled across Wales and western England — the underlying driver behind the wildfire and drought developments covered below. Some rain is forecast for parts of the UK this weekend, though it won’t be enough to meaningfully ease the dry spell.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

England — FSA recall: Graham’s Family Dairy Semi-Skimmed Milk

Status: Confirmed. The Food Standards Agency has recalled Graham’s Family Dairy Semi-Skimmed Milk (1 pint, 1 litre and 2 litre packs, best before 31 July 2026) after veterinary medicines, including the antibiotic penicillin, were found in the product. Anyone with a penicillin allergy is advised not to consume it — the FSA says the product is unsafe to drink. If you’ve bought it, don’t drink it; return it to where you bought it for a full refund.

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts

Global — WhatsApp Web exposed via Adobe Chrome extension flaw (patched)

Status: Confirmed, resolved. A flaw in the Adobe Acrobat Chrome extension — installed on roughly 329 million browsers — allowed malicious websites to read WhatsApp Web chats, contact names and message content without the user’s knowledge. BleepingComputer reports Adobe patched the flaw within two days, in version 26.5.2.3, which is already rolling out automatically. If you have the extension installed, check it’s on the latest version — no other action needed.

Middle East — Red Sea tanker attacks as US strikes widen into 12th night

Status: Developing. Yemen’s Houthi militia says it attacked two Saudi oil tankers, the Encelia and Layla, in the Red Sea, with one reported ablaze — a widening of the group’s blockade against Saudi shipping. It comes as the US military carries out a twelfth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, now extended into western and central Iran, and Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claims to have struck a US base in Jordan. The Guardian reports Brent crude remains close to $90 a barrel. UK households should expect fuel and energy costs to stay elevated rather than ease — full ongoing detail in our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

No significant nationally-relevant UK transport disruption reported at this time. Today’s travel stories are hyperlocal road and rail works with no wider household impact.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

GB grid — No active warnings

Status: Confirmed. NESO is reporting no live margin notices or capacity alerts for the GB electricity grid today.

💧 Water & Utilities

Wales — Environmental drought announcement expected today

Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (22 July), large parts of Wales are already classed as “prolonged dry weather.” Natural Resources Wales says river levels are now nearing all-time lows — including the Clwyd, Alwen, Alyn, Clywedog, Dyfi, Conwy and Wye — after Wales received around 5% of average July rainfall, and an “environmental drought” declaration for parts of the country is expected later today. NRW stresses this reflects environmental strain, not a threat to drinking water supplies, but is urging households to cut back where they can — showers over baths, and leaving water out for garden wildlife.

England — Hosepipe bans now cover more than 8 million households

Status: Ongoing. Following Thames Water’s ban taking effect this week, BBC reporting confirms restrictions are now in place for over 8 million households across England. Check your supplier’s website before using a hose or sprinkler — breaching a ban can mean a fine of up to £1,000.

🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity

Global — Minor geomagnetic storm forecast for 24 July

Status: Monitoring. NOAA SWPC forecasts a G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm for 24 July, with activity below G1 today and tomorrow. No impact expected on UK power, GPS or HF radio at this level — mainly of interest to aurora watchers at high latitudes.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

England & Wales — Bluetongue restriction zones unchanged

Status: Monitoring. APHA confirms five new bluetongue cases in England and one in Wales over 16–21 July, but no changes to restriction zones today. Risk of further incursion remains “medium.” No new household impact.

🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports

No new UK port or freight disruption reported today. Gulf shipping risk from the Red Sea tanker attacks (see Cyber & National Security above) remains the main pressure point on fuel costs rather than UK-side port capacity.

🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards

Wales — Wildfire “crisis management” arrangements activated, no aerial support available

Status: Ongoing. The Welsh government has activated crisis management arrangements as multiple wildfires burn across north and south Wales, including a blaze near Trawsfynydd in Gwynedd, grass fires in Wrexham and Flintshire, and a fire at Blaenavon in Torfaen now into its fourth day with smoke reaching as far as Cardiff. BBC Wales reports no helicopter water-bombing support is currently available anywhere in the UK — all contracted aircraft are already deployed to fires in England and Scotland. Householders near the Rhinogydd mountains have been advised to keep windows and doors closed against smoke; residents near Blaenavon report a persistent “acrid smell” several miles from the fire.

Quick Risk Summary — Your 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ Check the FSA recall on Graham’s Family Dairy semi-skimmed milk before your next shop
  • ☑️ If you’re near a wildfire in Wales, keep windows and doors shut if smoke is reaching your area
  • ☑️ Check your water supplier’s website for a hosepipe ban before you next reach for the hose
  • ☑️ Top up your fuel tank sooner rather than later — prices remain under pressure from the Gulf shipping conflict
  • ☑️ If you take Xaggitin XL, phenoxymethylpenicillin oral solution, or use ChloraPrep applicators, check your batch against the standing MHRA alerts
  • ☑️ Keep your GP surgery’s number handy if wildfire smoke triggers breathing symptoms in vulnerable household members

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

If you’re under a hosepipe ban, you can still water pots and borders — just not with a hose or sprinkler. Save washing-up water, bath water, or your shower’s “warm-up” run-off in a bucket and use that on the garden instead. It’s completely legal under every current ban and saves treated tap water for where it’s actually needed.
