📰 Quick News Brief

The polar vortex has weakened and briefly split earlier than at any time in 75 years of records, and the Met Office says colder air could reach much of the UK by the end of next week, though snow is far from guaranteed and a dry spell would worry drought-hit areas. Most of England is still in drought, and regulators have warned South West Water that its leaks are putting supplies at risk for about 325,000 people in Exeter and mid and east Devon. It’s a good weekend to check your heating, top up stored water and make sure you know how you’d keep warm if the power went off.
🔝 Leading Story
UK — Earliest Polar Vortex Weakening on Record Clouds the Winter Outlook
Status: Developing. The polar vortex, the ring of strong winds that normally keeps the coldest air locked over the Arctic in winter, has weakened, stretched and briefly split into two in recent days, BBC Weather reports. Some forecasts show its winds reversing by mid-November, which would make it a major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). Jeff Knight, lead climate scientist at the Met Office, said it “would appear to be the earliest on record looking back over the 75 years we’ve been observing”. The previous earliest major SSW events were on 28 November in 1969 and 2025.
SSWs can shift the jet stream and bring colder, drier northerly or easterly winds, with a higher chance of snow in the east of the UK. But forecasters stress this one is so early that the Arctic isn’t yet at mid-winter cold, so any cold spell could be weaker than usual, and there are almost no past examples to go on. The Met Office long-range forecast for 9 to 18 November says milder, wetter weather may reach the southern half of the UK for a time, then colder conditions could spread from the north towards the end of next week, possibly with brief wintry showers in northern areas.
The bigger worry for some experts is rain, not snow. Professor Andrew Perez-Charlton of the University of Reading told the BBC the “concerning thing” would be if the event brings the drier pattern typical of an SSW, with most of England and Wales still in drought and relying on a wet winter to refill low reservoirs. There are no Met Office weather warnings in force for the next seven days. For a household, this is a heads-up rather than an alarm: check the heating and boiler now, find the stopcock, and know how you’d keep warm if a cold snap and a power cut arrived together. ⚡ Power & Infrastructure
North of Scotland — SSEN Hands Out Emergency Battery Packs Ahead of Winter Storms
Status: Confirmed. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution has started giving portable battery packs to households in the north of Scotland who would be most at risk in a storm-related power cut, The Scotsman reports, in what is believed to be a first for a UK electricity network operator. So far 2,456 batteries have been handed out and about 11,000 offered, with a target of 20,000 by spring 2028. They can charge phones, tablets and laptops and power lights, broadband routers and some medical equipment, subject to the manufacturer’s approval. For everyone else, the lesson is simple: a charged power bank is the cheapest way to keep a phone, and your way of getting news and help, running through a winter outage.

Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset — Regulators Warn South West Water Over Leaks in Severe Drought
Status: Confirmed. Ofwat, the Environment Agency and Defra have written to South West Water saying its repeated failure to cut leaks is putting customers “at a greater level of risk” while parts of its region remain in severe drought, The Guardian reports. The company loses 113.5 million litres a day, leakage is 18.5% above forecast, and it has six weeks to produce an action plan. Wimbleball reservoir, which supplies parts of Devon, Somerset and Dorset, is at 16%. About 325,000 people and thousands of businesses in Exeter and mid and east Devon are at risk of having supplies regularly cut off over the coming weeks and months. Severe drought is also declared in parts of Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset, East Sussex and West Sussex, and about 82% of England is still in drought. If you’re in the affected area, keep a few days’ drinking water stored per person now.
London and the Thames Valley — 100 Days of Drought, Hosepipe Ban Stays
Status: Ongoing. Thames Water’s region has now been in drought for 100 days since the Environment Agency declaration on 29 July, Newbury Today reports. On 3 November total London reservoir storage was at 56% and Farmoor Reservoir near Oxford at 76%, and many groundwater sites are still below normal. Between March and September the region had just 34% of the rain it got over the same months in 2024. The Temporary Use Ban (hosepipe ban) remains in place for all Thames Water customers, and the company says cooler weather doesn’t mean the drought is over.

England — Eight Regional Water Councils to Be Set Up
Status: Confirmed. Defra is setting up eight regional water councils to give local areas more say over sewage, flooding, drought and future water supplies, Farmers Guide reports. Each will bring together 10 to 15 people, including mayors or council leaders, farmers, developers and customers, to help shape billions of pounds of investment in water and flood infrastructure, and mayors will get new powers under the Water Bill to hold water companies to account. Nothing changes for households yet, but it’s where future decisions on new reservoirs and flood schemes in your area will be shaped.

Cornwall — NHS Trust Data Breach Exposed Health Details of Almost 8,000 Staff
Status: Confirmed. An independent investigation into a Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust breach has found weaknesses in how data was prepared, checked and published, BBC News reports. A spreadsheet published in February 2023 held hidden sickness absence data, including sensitive health information, on 7,715 trust staff and 288 other workers, and stayed public until November 2025. The trust has apologised, says controls have been strengthened, and the Information Commissioner’s Office has closed its case. It’s a reminder that hidden tabs and columns in a spreadsheet travel with the file: check before you send one.

Europe — Hoax Bomb Threats Hit at Least 34 Flights This Week, Including From London and Birmingham
Status: Developing. As previously covered (4 November), hoax bomb threats against flights have continued, with at least 25 more on Thursday and at least 34 flights disrupted since Monday, The Guardian reports. Thursday’s threats affected airports including London and Birmingham, and seven of the week’s flights were to or from the UK. A Ryanair flight from London Stansted was diverted to Plovdiv in Bulgaria, according to WalesOnline, and some flights were escorted by fighter jets. Every incident so far has been a false alarm. Several threats were sent by anonymous email, and there’s no intelligence yet pointing to any group or state, although the scale has raised fears of a coordinated “hybrid” campaign. If you’re flying to Europe this weekend, allow for delays and keep essential medication and a phone charger in your hand luggage in case you end up somewhere unexpected.

Coleraine — Drivers Report Damage After Suspected Contaminated Fuel at Asda
Status: Developing. Asda says it is in direct contact with drivers who may have been affected by an issue with fuel bought at its Coleraine filling station between 25 and 29 October, Belfast Live reports. East Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has raised the suspected contamination at Stormont and says she has had similar reports from people who bought fuel elsewhere. If you filled up there in those dates and your car has run badly since, keep your fuel receipt and any garage repair reports.
UK — Report Puts Cost of September’s Air Traffic Control Failure at £33m
Status: Confirmed. The IT failure at National Air Traffic Services (NATS) in September cost the UK economy around £33m, and possibly up to £42m, according to a Cyber Monitoring Centre report covered by Infosecurity Magazine. It was not a cyberattack, but a brief outage in one critical system caused 1,152 cancellations by UK airlines and disrupted around 450,000 passengers over several days. The report says it shows “how a failure in a single critical technology can cause widespread disruption”. London — UK Doctor With Ebola Now Being Treated at the Royal Free
Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (5 November), a British doctor who tested positive for Ebola in DR Congo has now arrived in the UK, BBC News reports. He landed at RAF Northolt on Thursday and was taken by a police-escorted convoy to the high-level isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital in north London. Dr Renu Bindra of the UK Health Security Agency said there are “well-established procedures for dealing with cases like this” and the risk to the public remains low. The Royal Free successfully treated three health workers evacuated during the 2014 to 2015 West Africa outbreak. UK — Dosing Table Error for Sandoz Co-Amoxiclav Children’s Liquid
Status: Confirmed. The MHRA has warned that the prescribing information for Sandoz Co-amoxiclav 250/62.5 mg/5 ml powder for oral suspension, a common antibiotic liquid, had a dosing table that gave about twice the intended dose for weight-based dosing. The medicine itself isn’t affected, and the faulty information has been taken down. Patients should keep taking it as prescribed. If you think you or your child may have been given the higher dose and have diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting or tummy pain, get medical advice straight away, and ask your pharmacist if you’re unsure.

Tropicamide 1% Eye Drops — Wrong Expiry Date. Status: Confirmed. Aspire Pharma is recalling specific batches of Tropicamide 1% Eye Drops (single-dose containers, 20 x 0.5ml) because they were labelled with the wrong expiry date, the MHRA says. These drops are mainly used by opticians and eye clinics to widen the pupil for eye examinations, so the recall is aimed at those settings.

Vauxhall Astra, Vectra and Signum — Stop-Drive Notice Over Takata Airbags. Status: Confirmed. Vauxhall says up to 82,000 cars still on UK roads have unresolved airbag safety recalls and has told owners of the affected models to stop driving them, WalesOnline reports. The notice covers the Astra and Astravan (H, 2005 to 2013), Astra Twin Top (2005 to 2012), Vectra (2005 to 2008) and Signum (2005 to 2008), all fitted with Takata airbag inflators. South East England — Heating Oil Bills Double as Minister Tells Suppliers to Help Families in Debt
Status: Confirmed. Heating oil prices have roughly doubled since the war in the Middle East began, with a 1,000-litre fill now costing more than £970, BBC News reports. One East Sussex woman has taken a second job to pay for hers, and one supplier says many customers are holding off ordering for as long as possible. The government says it has pledged £53m for vulnerable households on heating oil and removed the 4% tariff. Separately, energy minister Polly Billington has told the bosses of Britain’s biggest energy suppliers to do more to help households with unpaid bills this winter, ahead of a government scheme of almost £2.5bn to write off debts for about 2.4m of the hardest-hit households, The Guardian reports. If you’re falling behind, contact your supplier now and ask about a payment plan: suppliers are expected to offer one.

Status: Developing. Ofgem has opened an investigation into whether Scottish Power has treated customers fairly, including those in vulnerable situations and those struggling to pay, The Herald reports. It will also look at backbilling for energy used more than 12 months earlier and the firm’s handling of the Priority Services Register. The regulator stresses it hasn’t made any findings yet. If someone in your home relies on powered medical equipment or would struggle in a power cut, make sure you’re on your supplier’s and network operator’s Priority Services Register.
UK — Bank of England Warns El Niño Could Push Up Food Prices From Early Next Year
Status: Confirmed. The Bank of England’s latest Monetary Policy Report warns that extreme weather linked to El Niño could push up UK food prices, with fruit and vegetables likely to rise first, from early next year and for many months, the Evening Standard reports. The Bank says a quarter of UK food imports come from El Niño-exposed regions, and that together with this year’s heatwaves, El Niño could add about two percentage points to food price inflation. Buying a few extra long-life tins and dried goods each week while prices are steady is a sensible, low-cost hedge.

UK — Interest Rates Rise to 4%, and More May Follow
Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (5 November), the Bank of England has raised interest rates from 3.75% to 4%, its first rise since August 2023, BBC News reports. Eight of the nine committee members voted for the rise and one wanted 4.25%. Governor Andrew Bailey said that “unless the conflict in the Middle East is resolved, neither does it seem likely to be the last increase”. The Bank now expects inflation to peak at 4.9% in the middle of next year, or 6.2% in 2027 if the US-Iran war escalates and oil prices climb further. Tracker mortgage payments rise straight away; anyone with a fixed deal ending in the next six months should start comparing now. 💡 UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day
With a possible cold spell on the horizon and drought still biting, fill a few clean, food-grade bottles or containers with tap water this weekend and store them somewhere cool and dark. Two litres per person per day for three days covers drinking, and if the pipes freeze or supplies are cut, you won’t be queueing at a bottled water station. Swap the water out every six months and it costs next to nothing.
