📰 Quick News Brief

Around 11,500 homes in and around Stamford were left with low pressure or no water after a burst Anglian Water main, and the bottled water hub ran out within hours. Flood alerts are in force along the River Wyre in Lancashire after heavy overnight rain, while the NHS warns of record September A&E demand and the earliest flu admissions its top doctor can remember. If you have no stored water at home, today is a good day to fill a few bottles.
🔝 Leading Story
Stamford, Lincolnshire — Burst Main Cuts Water to 11,500 Homes and the Bottled Water Hub Runs Dry
Status: Developing. A burst Anglian Water main left around 11,500 properties across Stamford, Greatford, Tallington, Uffington, Belmesthorpe and the surrounding villages with low water pressure or no water at all from Thursday lunchtime, LincsOnline reports. Anglian Water opened a bottled water collection point in the Morrisons car park on Uffington Road, which caused long tailbacks through the town as people queued in their cars.
By Thursday evening that hub had been “quickly depleted” and was temporarily closed to restock, according to the Stamford Mercury. Anglian Water said teams were making “good progress”, would work through the night on the repair and were setting up further hubs outside the town. Customers are asked to check the company’s updates before making a journey for water, and to collect for neighbours who can’t get there themselves. When supply returns it may look cloudy from air bubbles, which Anglian Water says is safe.
For households, this is the clearest case for keeping your own water at home: the official fallback was a single car park that ran out on day one. Two litres per person per day for drinking, plus some for washing, covers you through a repair like this without queuing.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook
Lancashire & Cumbria — Flood Alerts on the River Wyre After Heavy Overnight Rain
Status: Confirmed. The Environment Agency issued flood alerts on Thursday evening for the Lower River Wyre and the Upper River Wyre and Brock, warning that flooding was possible in the early hours of Friday. Low-lying land and roads near the Wyre, Cocker, Calder, Brock and Pilling Water are most at risk, including Garstang, Scorton, Bilsborrow, Churchtown, Catterall, St Michael’s, Great Eccleston, Preesall and down to Fleetwood. A separate alert was raised on Thursday for the River Ash in Spelthorne, Surrey.
In Cumbria, BBC News reports Network Rail warned passengers to check journeys and allow extra time, with heavy rain forecast to continue until about 7am on Friday. If you live near these rivers, keep away from flood water on roads and footpaths, and check the Environment Agency flood map before you travel this morning.
Global — UN Says El Niño Will Keep Strengthening Until a December Peak
Status: Confirmed. The World Meteorological Organization says El Niño will “continue to intensify ahead of its forecast peak in December” and could be among the strongest since at least 1950, with Pacific sea temperatures forecast to reach record levels from October to December, France 24 via AOL reports. The WMO warns this raises the risk of both drought and floods in different regions. For UK households, the Met Office has already flagged signals for more rain and storminess into November and December, so this is the time to check your torches, batteries and grab bag rather than in the middle of a storm. See our Special Report “El Nino UK Winter 2026: The Record Storm Season” first published on 5 September 2026.
💰 Scams
UK-Wide — Data Watchdog Investigates “Add Me on WhatsApp” Robocalls
Status: Confirmed. The Information Commissioner’s Office is investigating a sharp rise in automated “robo calls” where a recorded voice asks you to add them on WhatsApp, suspected of leading to a recruitment scam, BBC News reports. The ICO received more than 3,600 complaints about automated calls in September, a five-year high and nearly three times July’s figure. The calls usually appear to come from a UK mobile number and some mention part-time work. Don’t add the number or reply: ignore calls you don’t recognise, then block and report them to the ICO.
UK-Wide — Fake-Product “Purchase Scams” Almost Triple in a Year
Status: Confirmed. Purchase scams, where you pay upfront for goods or services that don’t exist or never arrive, are now the UK’s fastest-growing type of fraud, with checks in this category up 164% in 12 months, according to scam-checking service data reported by WalesOnline. Marketplace scams on sites like Facebook Marketplace and Etsy are up 76%, fake security pop-ups up 62% in six months and fake delivery messages up 29%. Pay by card or through the platform’s own checkout, never by bank transfer to a stranger.

Glasgow & Strathclyde — SP Energy Networks Tells 3.5m Homes and Businesses to Prepare for Winter Power Cuts
Status: Confirmed. SP Energy Networks is delivering winter safety leaflets to more than 3.5 million homes and businesses across its areas, including Glasgow and Strathclyde, urging them to prepare for power cuts caused by storms this winter, the Glasgow Times reports. The leaflets arrive in phases through October and include tailored advice for people who rely on medical equipment or qualify for the Priority Services Register. The network also asks customers to make sure it has their current contact details, so compensation under its Guaranteed Standards of Service can be paid automatically. Anyone in the UK can call 105 to report or check a power cut.

💧 Water & Utilities
Devon — Burrator Reservoir Below 36 Per Cent as South West Water Warns of More Controls
Status: Ongoing. As previously covered (6 October), South West Water has applied for a drought order to restrict non-essential business water use around Exeter, Exmouth, Crediton, Sidmouth, Tiverton and Lyme Regis. New figures given to The Moorlander show Burrator Reservoir at 35.9 per cent on 6 October, and the company describes the region as entering a “critical phase of an exceptionally prolonged drought”. The hosepipe ban stays in force for all South West Water customers. See our Special Report “Why Is There a Hosepipe Ban?” first published on 8 August 2026.
🔒 Cyber Security
UK-Wide — ASOS Admits Hackers Took Full Customer Profiles, Not Just Contact Details
Status: Confirmed. As previously covered (7 October), ASOS confirmed a cyber incident after hackers pushed a message to customers’ phones. ASOS has now told customers that criminals hold detailed profiles of potentially millions of users, after BBC News was contacted by the hackers. Names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, customer numbers and even site search history were taken, though ASOS says no bank details or passwords were accessed. That’s enough for convincing phishing emails and calls, so treat any unexpected message claiming to be from ASOS as a scam. ASOS says it will never ask for passwords, security codes or payment details by message or call.
Global — UK and Allies Expose China-Linked Firm Enabling Cyber Attacks Worldwide
Status: Confirmed. The NCSC and international partners have published a joint advisory naming China-linked company Integrity Technology Group for enabling cyber actors to target organisations worldwide, using AI-enabled tools, large botnets and hands-on hacking to steal sensitive data. Botnets are often built from hijacked home routers and smart devices, so keep router firmware updated and change any default passwords.
📻 Emergency Alerts & Communications Infrastructure
UK-Wide — Old Landlines Switch Off in January as Power Cuts Become the Top Cause of Broadband Outages
Status: Confirmed. The traditional copper phone network (PSTN) used by more than two million people is due to be switched off in January 2027, and the deadline won’t move, WalesOnline reports. Landlines will run over broadband instead, and telecare devices such as fall alarms are among the systems affected. Providers are offering extra support and free engineer visits to telecare users.
The catch shows up in a new Uswitch survey reported by ISPreview. Power cuts are now the most common cause of broadband outages, at 42% of cases, and 63% of affected rural homes lost broadband to a power cut. A digital landline plugs into your router, so when the power goes, your home phone goes with it. Old analogue lines were powered from the exchange, which is why that wasn’t a problem before. Keep a charged mobile and power bank, and ask your provider about a battery backup unit if anyone at home relies on a landline or care alarm.
🛡️ National Security
Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.

He is the first member of the British armed forces charged under the 2023 Act, and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on 16 October. Police say the case is not connected to the RAF Fairford investigation. See our Special Report “Is Russia a Threat to the UK?” first published on 26 July 2026.
Cambridgeshire — Two Men Arrested Inside RAF Molesworth Under the National Security Act
Status: Developing. Two Latvian men, aged 32 and 36 and living in the UK, were arrested inside the perimeter of RAF Molesworth, a base used by the US military and NATO for intelligence work, BBC News reports. Ministry of Defence Police found an abandoned vehicle outside at about 10pm on Wednesday, then a small breach in the perimeter fence. The pair were first held on suspicion of trespass and criminal damage, then further arrested under section 4 of the National Security Act.

National medical director Professor Frankie Swords said flu admissions are “the highest that I can remember seeing at this time of year”, coinciding with rising Covid cases, and called them “slightly ominous early signs of winter pressure,” the Manchester Evening News reports. UKHSA data shows Covid hospital admissions up sharply, with the XFG “Stratus” variant behind many recent cases. If you’re eligible for a flu or Covid jab, book it now, and keep basic cold and flu supplies at home so a bad week doesn’t mean a trip out while you’re ill.

UK-Wide — E.ON Completes OVO Takeover, Leaving the “Big Three” Energy Suppliers
Status: Confirmed. E.ON completed its takeover of OVO on Thursday, putting more than 10 million customers under one group, the Birmingham Mail reports. Both companies say there is no immediate change: existing tariffs are honoured in full, customer service channels stay the same, and customers will get plenty of notice of any future change. If you’re with OVO, take a meter reading and a screenshot of your current tariff now, so you have a record if anything changes later.
UK-Wide — Households “Almost £3,000 Worse Off” After Five Years of High Prices
Status: Confirmed. A Resolution Foundation study finds the UK has had the equivalent of 13 years of normal inflation in five years, leaving the average household around £2,900 worse off, with energy costs at the centre, the Manchester Evening News reports. 18% of poorer households were behind on priority bills such as energy, water, council tax or rent in March. Status: Confirmed. The average five-year fixed mortgage rate has reached 6.00%, the highest since September 2023, and the two-year average is at 5.98%, according to Moneyfacts figures reported by the Bolton News. It comes as 10-year government borrowing costs hit their highest level since July 2007, The Guardian reports. If your fixed deal ends in the next six months, ask your lender or a broker about securing a new deal now, as many offers can be reserved months ahead.
