Most households have at least three different charging cables on the go — one for the older iPhone, one for the Android, one for the tablet. In a power cut, when you’re hunting for the right cable by torchlight, that becomes a problem very quickly. The Kuulaa Magnetic Charging Cable is a single cable with swappable magnetic tips that works with USB-C, Micro-USB, and Lightning devices. You leave a tiny tip plugged into each device permanently, and the cable snaps onto whichever one you need. One cable. Everything charges.

It costs £13.99 for two cables (1m and 2m), has over 2,200 Amazon reviews, and it’s Amazon’s Choice. We bought one to find out whether it actually earns a place in the grab bag.

How the Kuulaa Magnetic Charging Cable Works

The box contains two cables and six magnetic tips: two USB-C, two Micro-USB, and two Lightning. You plug one tip into each device you want to be able to charge — phone, tablet, spare torch, whatever — and leave it there. The tips are small enough that they barely register once in place, and they double as dust caps for the charging port.

When you want to charge something, the cable end snaps magnetically to the tip in the device. It takes about a second and you can do it one-handed without looking. The magnetic connection is strong enough to hold the cable in place during normal use, but releases cleanly when you pull. That one-handed operation is more useful than it sounds when you’re fumbling in the dark, or trying to charge your phone from a power bank tucked in a side pocket of a bag.

The 360° rotating magnetic head means the cable can sit at any angle — flat against the side of a phone, straight out, or bent back on itself. The 180° L-shaped setting is useful if you want to charge a device flat on a table without the cable standing out awkwardly.

Build Quality and What’s in the Box

The cables are nylon braided, which matters — standard rubber cables split at the connector end with regular use. Kuulaa claim 10,000 bend tests, which is a marketing number but it does indicate an attention to construction that cheaper cables skip. In normal use the cables feel solid, with no flimsy plastic at the ends.

The magnetic tips are small metallic discs with a short connector on one end. Once seated in a charging port they sit flush or very close to flush. There’s a small LED on the cable end that glows when the magnetic connection is made — again, more useful than it sounds in low-light conditions.

Two cables in the pack is a sensible choice: the 1m cable for everyday use on a desk or table, the 2m cable for charging from a power bank further away, or for running to a bedside device.

Two magnetic charging cable that snaps onto USB-C, Micro-USB, and Lightning — leave a tip in every device, grab the cable, charge anything.

Charging Speed and Data Transfer

The USB-C connection delivers up to 3A fast charging, which is enough for standard fast charging on most Android phones and USB-C iPhones. Micro-USB and Lightning connections run at 2.4A — slower, but still noticeably faster than the 1A most older chargers default to.

One limitation worth being upfront about: this cable is not suitable for high-wattage laptop charging. If you need to charge a MacBook or a laptop over USB-C at 65W or more, use the original cable. The Kuulaa is designed for phones, tablets, and small devices — it does that well.

Data transfer works at up to 480Mbps, so you can move files off a device as well as charge it. Useful if you need to copy photos or documents off a phone without an internet connection.

The Grab Bag and Emergency Kit Angle

This is where the Kuulaa genuinely earns its place. A well-packed grab bag or 72-hour kit should already have a power bank in it — but a power bank is only useful if you have the right cable. A household with a mix of older iPhones, newer iPhones, and Android devices normally needs three separate cables to cover everyone. The Kuulaa reduces that to one cable with three tips.

More practically: leave the magnetic tips permanently in the devices you’d grab in an emergency. Your phone, your partner’s phone, the kid’s tablet. The cable snaps to whichever device needs charging, without hunting through a bag for the right connector. In the dark, one-handed, under stress — that matters.

The LED indicator on the cable end also helps in a blackout. When the connection is made, the light confirms it. Small thing, but reassuring when you can’t see clearly.

For everyday power cut preparedness, keep one Kuulaa cable with your power bank. The 2m length gives you reach if the power bank is sitting on a shelf while the phone charges nearby.

What to Watch Out For

A few things worth knowing before you buy:

  • Lightning tips are for iPhone 14 and below. iPhone 15, 15 Pro, 16, and newer all use USB-C. If everyone in your household has a newer iPhone, you may not need the Lightning tips at all — USB-C covers you.
  • Not for high-wattage laptop charging. Fine for phones, tablets, portable speakers, and similar devices. Not a replacement for a 65W+ laptop charger.
  • The tips add a tiny amount of depth to the charging port. On most phones this is completely unnoticed, but worth knowing if you have a very tight-fitting case.
  • Data transfer at 480Mbps is USB 2.0 speed. Fast enough for photos and documents. Not what you’d use for large file transfers.

Verdict

At £13.99 for two cables, the Kuulaa Magnetic Charging Cable is a practical buy for any household with mixed devices. The single-cable-for-everything concept actually works, the build quality is better than the price suggests, and the one-handed magnetic snap is genuinely useful when you’re moving quickly or working in low light. It won’t replace your laptop charger and the Lightning tips are only relevant for older iPhones — but for phones, tablets, and small emergency devices, it’s a neat solution to a problem most households don’t realise they have.

What the Rest of the Team Think

🦆 Keith the Prepper

I already have fourteen charging cables — one for each device in each room, plus one for each vehicle and two spares in the tactical bag. This single cable would have made all of them redundant. I’m not sure how I feel about that. I’ve ordered four of these anyway, as backup for the backups.

In the field, operational efficiency demands that gear serves multiple roles. A single cable capable of charging any device is precisely the kind of load-reducing solution that separates the prepared operator from the amateur. I carry three of these. One primary, one secondary, one tertiary. The tertiary location is classified.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

🤡 Camping Clown

I already own a hand-stitched Italian leather cable organiser that cost £340 and houses my collection of 23 individual cables from specialist manufacturers. The Kuulaa does admittedly achieve the same result for £13.99. I’m choosing not to think about that too hard.

Pickle ate the Lightning tip off mine within forty minutes of unboxing. Fortunately the pack comes with two of each tip, so I still have a spare. The nylon braiding is holding up well — Pickle has had three attempts at the cable itself and it’s still intact. Four stars, would be five without the Pickle tax.

“Snorgle!”

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Translation: The Lightning tip was outstanding. Dad has hidden the USB-C ones. I don’t know why. They look the same to me.)

🐔 Chicken Licken

I ran extensive tests to determine whether the magnetic field from the tips interferes with the data on the device. After three weeks of testing, data appears intact. I have, however, noticed that my phone battery drains slightly faster since fitting the tip. I’m not saying it’s a tracker. I’m just saying I can’t rule it out. The cable itself charges fine.

📋 Calm Clarissa

I have laminated the tip assignment guide and attached it to each device with a colour-coded cable tie. Janet has a monthly rota to test the magnetic connection on all six tips. The LED indicator has been incorporated into the household blackout protocol — it is section 4, paragraph 2. The cable is adequate.

💄 Survivl Gurl

Okay the LED light when it connects is actually really cute for golden hour content shots. The cable doesn’t come in rose gold or camo which is genuinely frustrating. It does keep my phone charged for the 47 photos I take per survival session so I can’t complain about performance. Three stars until they sort the colourways.

🌿 Aroura

I cleansed all six magnetic tips under the full moon before inserting them into my devices. The magnetic energy is surprisingly well-aligned with my personal energy field — magnets work with the earth’s own frequencies, as any healer knows. I am not using the Micro-USB tip as it does not resonate. I don’t have any Micro-USB devices, so this is fine. The cable charges beautifully. Namaste 🙏

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this work with iPhone 15, 16, and newer models?

Yes — use the USB-C tip. All iPhones from the 15 onwards use USB-C, so the USB-C tip in the pack covers you. The Lightning tips are for iPhone 14 and below.

Do I need to remove the magnetic tip from the device when I’m not charging?

No. The tips are designed to stay in the charging port permanently. They sit close to flush and act as dust caps. You only need the cable when you want to charge — remove the cable, tip stays in the device.

Can I use this with Samsung fast charging?

The USB-C connection supports up to 3A, which works with standard fast charging on most Samsung phones. It won’t enable Samsung’s highest-wattage protocols (25W+ Super Fast Charging), but it will charge noticeably faster than a standard 1A cable.

Is it safe to leave the tips in the charging port all the time?

Yes. The tips are designed to be left in place and are small enough not to interfere with normal phone use. Check the tip fits flush with your case before committing to leaving it in permanently.

Can I use this to charge a laptop?

Not recommended for laptops requiring high-wattage charging (65W and above). The Kuulaa is designed for phones, tablets, and small USB-C devices. Use the original cable for any laptop that needs serious power delivery.
