Amber and yellow heat-health alerts remain in force across most of England after Friday set two new records — the most 35C+ days and the most 34C+ days in a calendar year — with the heatwave forecast to return after a slightly cooler weekend. Five water companies have now announced hosepipe bans covering more than five million households, with Anglian Water’s ban taking effect from 01:00 this morning. Check on vulnerable neighbours in the heat, and stick to the restrictions in your area — more bans could follow if the dry spell continues.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook
England, Wales and Scotland — Record Heat, Brief Weekend Cooldown
Status: Ongoing. Friday saw temperatures exceed 35C somewhere in the UK for the sixth time in 2026 — a new record for the most 35C+ days in a calendar year — while the ninth day above 34C also broke the previous record. The highest temperature recorded was 35.2C at Coton-in-the-Elms, Derbyshire, according to the BBC Weather Centre. A strengthening north-easterly wind will bring a noticeably cooler feel to eastern England this weekend, with highs of 33C still expected in the west Midlands and south-east Wales on Saturday. The respite is temporary — forecasters say the heatwave criteria could be met again across more of the UK by Wednesday or Thursday, with temperatures forecast to reach 30C or more on 12 days in a row before easing next weekend. Authorities have also warned of an increased risk of wildfires while the dry, hot conditions persist.

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts
Scotland — NHS Forth Valley Email Data Breach
Status: Developing. NHS Forth Valley has confirmed a member of staff sent a spreadsheet containing maternity patient data to their personal email account, according to The Register. Around 150 women who used the trust’s maternity services are affected, with the leaked data including full names, dates of birth, NHS numbers and pregnancy treatment details. The trust says the staff member has deleted the data, there is no evidence it was shared further, and it has informed the Information Commissioner’s Office and Police Scotland. Anyone who used NHS Forth Valley maternity services and is concerned should watch for direct contact from the trust.
UK-wide — Ofcom Targets Scam Adverts on Big Tech Platforms
Status: Confirmed. Ofcom has published draft proposals requiring platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube to ban scam advertisers and block them from creating new accounts, according to the BBC. Ofcom says more than half of UK adults have encountered a fraudulent advert online. Firms that fail to comply once the rules are in force could face fines of up to £18m or 10% of global turnover. The consultation runs until 2 October, with campaigners warning consumers won’t be protected until 2027 at the earliest — so treat unsolicited “too good to be true” ads with the same caution as before.
🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
No significant UK-wide household transport disruption reported at this time.
⚡ Power & Infrastructure
North Sea — Jackdaw Gas Field Approval Warning
Status: Developing. The boss of the Jackdaw gas field’s operator has warned of a winter fuel shortage risk if government approval for continued North Sea production isn’t granted soon, according to the BBC. The field’s backers say the domestic supply matters for winter gas security, though the assessment of its climate impact is still being finalised by the industry regulator. No immediate household impact, but one to watch as the decision develops. Earlier this week, we published a special report covering this: Gas Shortage This Winter: What Every Household Needs to Know
💧 Water & Utilities
East of England — Anglian Water Hosepipe Ban
Status: Confirmed. Anglian Water has introduced its first hosepipe ban in a decade, taking effect from 01:00 BST today, according to the BBC. It covers domestic customers across Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, banning hosepipe use for paddling pools, hot tubs, car washing and garden watering. Watering cans can still be used on fruit, vegetables and gardens. East Anglia is the UK’s driest region, and the East of England has had its second-driest spring on record.
Hertfordshire and Home Counties — Affinity Water Hosepipe Ban
Status: Confirmed. Affinity Water is bringing in restrictions from 00:01 BST on 17 July after demand rose by 20% in recent weeks, according to the BBC. It covers most of Hertfordshire and parts of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Surrey and north and west London. Breaching the ban is a criminal offence under the Water Industry Act 1991, carrying fines of up to £1,000.
Cambridgeshire, Hampshire and the South East — Further Bans Already Active
Status: Ongoing. Cambridge Water introduced its first hosepipe ban in 30 years on Thursday, while a ban for around a million households supplied by Southern Water in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is already in force, alongside South East Water’s own restrictions, according to the BBC. Five water companies have now announced bans affecting more than five million people in total.
North West England — United Utilities Watching Closely
Status: Monitoring. United Utilities has not imposed a hosepipe ban, but a heat-health alert has been in force in the region since Wednesday and runs until Sunday evening, according to the BBC. The company’s reservoirs are currently more resilient than many other regions’, but says it is monitoring reservoir levels and drought triggers closely as the hot, dry spell continues.
🏦 Banking, Finance & Cost of Living
UK-wide — Bank of England Chief Economist Flags Possible Rate Rise
Status: Confirmed. Bank of England chief economist Huw Pill has said interest rates may need to rise this year to keep inflation under control, according to the BBC. Inflation currently stands at 2.8%, above the Bank’s 2% target. Pill, a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, was among the minority who voted for a rate rise in June. Any future rate rise would affect mortgage and borrowing costs — no immediate change today, but one to watch for anyone with a mortgage due for renewal this year.
🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity
Status: Monitoring. A minor G1 geomagnetic storm is forecast for 12 July, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. At this level, impacts are limited to a small chance of aurora at high UK latitudes — no effect on power, GPS or communications expected.
🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts
England — Bluetongue Virus (BTV-3)
Status: Monitoring. APHA has confirmed one case of bluetongue virus serotype 3 in England so far this season, with risk classified as medium as warm weather allows the virus to develop and spread via midges, according to APHA. The whole of England remains a restricted zone, as does Wales. This is a sharp reduction from the 348 cases recorded across Great Britain last season. Farmers and smallholders moving livestock should check current licensing requirements before transport.
🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports
Strait of Hormuz — Ceasefire Tensions and Shipping Disruption
Status: Developing. The US has told Iran to publicly confirm the Strait of Hormuz is open and pledge to stop firing on commercial ships, ahead of talks in Oman on Saturday, according to the BBC. US officials say Iran has privately admitted the shooting at ships this week was a mistake by a “rogue” internal group, while President Trump has said the ceasefire agreed in June is “OVER” pending a public Iranian statement. Three ships were struck this week using a US-recommended route through Omani waters, and shipping data shows a marked fall in vessels using the route since. Separately, the Guardian reports Europe is considering allowing voluntary navigational fees for the strait. No confirmed change to UK fuel prices today, but continued disruption here has previously fed through to pump prices — follow our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker for updates.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist
- ☑️ Check on elderly, unwell or vulnerable neighbours through the weekend heat, and again as it builds back up midweek
- ☑️ If you’re in an Anglian Water, Affinity Water, Cambridge Water, Southern Water or South East Water area, check your exact restrictions before using a hosepipe
- ☑️ Keep pets cool, hydrated and off hot pavements during the day
- ☑️ Freeze bottles of water or keep a cool box ready rather than relying on extra fridge/freezer space in the heat
- ☑️ Check the FSA and MHRA links above if you have any of today’s recalled products in your kitchen or medicine cabinet
- ☑️ If you’re due a mortgage renewal this year, keep an eye on interest rate news rather than assuming today’s rate will hold

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day
With hosepipe bans spreading and the heat due to build back up midweek, keep cooling low-tech and low-water: a damp cloth or cooling towel around the neck works as well as anything mains-powered, and it uses a cupful of water rather than a hosepipe’s worth.
