Two days into a power cut, the freezer has given up, the electric hob is a very expensive shelf and someone has eaten the last of the crackers. This is the moment a 24 hour ration pack earns its place in the cupboard: a full day’s food for one person in a single sealed bag, with breakfast, main meals, pudding, snacks and hot drinks, all fully cooked and ready to eat hot or cold.
This review covers the Ration-X 24 hour ration pack. It’s UK-made, built to the same one-person, one-day format as the British Army 24 hour ration pack, and comes in four menus. Unlike a freeze-dried bucket of American food costing hundreds of pounds that you’ve never actually tasted, you can buy one Ration-X pack, eat it on a Tuesday night and know exactly what you’re stocking.
Ration-X 24 Hour Ration Pack
A full day’s food in one sealed bag: UK-made, ready to eat hot or cold, no fridge, no cooking and no guesswork. Four menus to choose from.
What Is a 24 Hour Ration Pack?
A 24 hour ration pack is exactly what the name says: everything one person needs to eat and drink for a full day, sealed in one bag. The format comes from the military, where a soldier in the field needs a known amount of food, no cooking kitchen and packaging that survives being sat on in a ditch. Some people call it a rat pack, some a 24hr ration pack and some a 24 hr ration pack, depending on how much of a hurry they’re typing in. It’s the same thing.
The Ration-X 24 hour ration pack follows the classic British 24 hour ration pack layout. The main meals are retort pouches, the same sealed-pouch technology used for supermarket ready meals, so the food is already fully cooked. You can eat it straight from the pouch, cold if you have to, which is the whole point when the power is off.

Ration-X 24 Hour Ration Pack Menus
Every Ration-X 24 hour ration pack has three 300g main meals plus pudding, snacks, drinks and a few useful extras (the vegan menu has four mains). The difference between menus is the food, so pick the day that sounds best to you.
Menu 1: All Day Breakfast, Chicken Curry and Beef Stew
The classic day. An all day breakfast to start, chicken curry at lunchtime and beef stew with veg for tea, plus a dessert cake, brown biscuits and boiled sweets. If you’re only buying one Ration-X 24 hour ration pack to try, this is the familiar, safe place to start.

Menu 2: Chicken Casserole, Beef Stew and Spicy Veg Pasta
Proper comfort food. Chicken casserole, beef stew and veg, and a spicy veg pasta, with the dessert cake, biscuits and sweets. There’s no breakfast pouch on this one, just three hearty main meals, so it suits anyone who’d rather have a hot dinner than a fry-up.

Menu 4 (Vegan): Noodles Goreng and Bean and Pasta
The fully vegan Ration-X 24 hour ration pack, and the only one with four main meals: two noodles goreng and two bean and pasta. In place of the dessert cake you get peanut butter and jam for the brown biscuits, plus extra boiled sweets. If anyone in your house is vegan, this is the one to stock for them.

Menu 5: Chicken Rogan Josh, Yellow Chicken Curry and Vegetable Sausage
The one for curry fans. Chicken rogan josh, yellow chicken curry, and vegetable sausage with potatoes and mushrooms. It also comes with a snack bar and little sachets of salt and pepper, the small touches that make a ration pack feel more like a meal and less like a duty.

Who Are 24 Hour Ration Packs For?
A 24 hour ration pack is designed for active people. Around 4,000 kcal is what a soldier needs while carrying a heavy pack across Salisbury Plain in the rain. Most of us sitting in a cold living room during a power cut burn far less, which is good news: a pack goes further at home than it would on exercise.
They work best for:
- Households wanting a no-cook food reserve, especially homes with an electric hob or oven that stops dead in a power cut.
- Anyone short on cupboard space who can’t run a big rotating pantry of tins and dried food.
- Older relatives living alone, where a sealed day of food in one bag is far simpler than a list of instructions.
- Campers, walkers and anglers who want a day’s food that doesn’t need a cool box.
They are heavier than you might expect, around 1.8 to 1.9kg each, so they’re better suited to a home food store or the car than a grab bag you might have to carry on foot.
Shelf Life and Storage: How Long Do Army Ration Packs Last?
Expect a 24 hour ration pack to last around two to three years from packing, and the best-before date is printed on every pack. For comparison, the Ministry of Defence’s own ration contract asks for at least 24 months of shelf life left on delivery, so Ration-X is in the same territory as the real thing.
That’s shorter than the 25 years some freeze-dried buckets promise, but there’s an upside. These are meals you’ll actually want to eat, so rotating them is no hardship: take the oldest one camping, on a fishing trip or to work on a day you forgot lunch, then buy a fresh one.
Storage is the easy part. Each pack is a flat, sealed bag that needs no fridge or freezer. A cool, dry cupboard, a wardrobe shelf or a box under the bed is ideal. Avoid a hot loft or a car in summer, as heat shortens the life of any food.
What’s in a British Army 24 Hour Ration Pack?
A British Army 24 hour ration pack is built to keep one person fed, hydrated and reasonably cheerful for a day. The Ration-X version follows the same pattern. A typical pack contains:
- Main meals: three 300g retort pouches, fully cooked and ready to eat hot or cold (four on the vegan menu)
- Pudding: a dessert cake
- Snacks: brown biscuits and boiled sweets
- Drinks: an energy drink powder, hot chocolate, tea bags, instant coffee, sugar and whitener
- Extras: water purification tablets, a biodegradable spoon, wet wipes and a re-sealable bag for rubbish
The main meals need no water at all. The drinks do, but the pack includes water purification tablets, which is a thoughtful touch for a power cut that also takes out the water supply. It’s the same approach as the classic British 24 hour ration pack: everything you need for the day, nothing you don’t.
How Many 24 Hour Ration Packs Do You Need?
Keep it simple: one 24 hour ration pack per person, per day. Three days for a family of four is twelve packs.
Because a pack is built for a soldier’s appetite, there will usually be food left over at home. That’s useful rather than wasteful. Spare biscuits and sweets cover children, stretch a longer outage or keep the person in your house who stress-eats happily occupied. If you already keep a pantry of tins and dried food, a few days of ration packs on top makes a solid, no-cook backstop.
Buy One First and Try It
This is the most useful advice in the whole review: buy one pack, or one of each menu, before you buy a case.
Eat it at home on a normal evening, or take it on a camping trip. Note which meals you enjoyed, which you’d tolerate and which you’d struggle with on a bad day. Then stock up on the menus your household actually likes. Food you won’t eat isn’t emergency food, it’s expensive cupboard clutter.
If you want to try it hot without the hob, add a pack of flameless heaters to that first order. More on those below.
How to Heat a 24 Hour Ration Pack
You have three options, from no effort at all to proper hot food.
Eat it cold
Every main meal in a 24 hour ration pack is fully cooked, so in the worst case you can open the pouch and eat it as it is. It’s not a candlelit dinner, but it’s filling and needs no fuel, no water and no washing up.
Use a camping stove
A camping gas stove is the quickest way to a proper hot meal. Either stand the sealed pouch in a pan of hot water for a few minutes, or tip the meal into a pan or mess tin and warm it through. The same stove boils water for the tea bags and hot chocolate in the pack.
Portable Gas Stove with Carry Case & 8 Butane Cartridges
Boils the kettle and cooks a proper meal on top of your hob when the power goes, with no electricity at all.
Use a flameless ration heater
For no gas, no flame and no fuel to store, a flameless ration heater is the neat answer. You add a little water, it heats up, and it warms a wet meal like a ration pouch in up to 10 minutes. Each heater is single use and easy to dispose of, and a pack of ten takes up almost no room next to your ration packs. They’re ideal indoors during a power cut, or anywhere a stove isn’t practical.

If you’d rather have the heater built in, Ration-X also makes self heating meals: one hot meal with its own flameless heater, light enough for grab bags and car kits.
Ration-X Self Heating Meals
A hot meal anywhere with no stove, gas or flame: just add a little water. Packed in the UK, five menus, light enough for a grab bag or the car.
Our Full Review: Ration-X Self Heating Meals →Our Verdict
For a UK household that wants a food reserve needing no cooking, no fridge and no rotation every six months, the Ration-X 24 hour ration pack is a strong choice. It’s UK-made, follows the proven British Army 24 hour ration pack format, and comes in four menus, so you can stock food your family will actually eat.
Start with one pack or one of each menu, find your favourites, then build up a few days per person. Add a pack of flameless heaters and you have hot meals in a power cut without touching the gas.
What the Rest of the Team Think
🤡 Camping Clown
I’ve got the full 10-menu bundle plus a £340 freeze-dried mountain meal system to compare against it. I also ordered a titanium spork — saves 12 grams — and a 17-piece mess kit specifically for eating from a pouch that doesn’t need a mess kit. Haven’t opened any of them. The spec sheets are very thorough.

I checked every retort pouch for tracking devices before opening. The main meal took two days. DarkOwl47 has flagged the hot chocolate sachets as requiring further investigation — something about the foil inner lining. The food itself is fine. Probably. I’m monitoring the tea bags.

Janet and I completed a full menu tasting exercise in February. Menus 2, 5, and 7 are on the approved list. The hot chocolate scored below threshold — raised with the supplier, on the action log. I have a rotation schedule, a laminated storage diagram, and an expiry date spreadsheet. Janet has copies of all three.

I cleansed the outer packaging under the new moon before opening. The retort pouch carries quite dense energy from the industrial sealing process — burning sage beforehand neutralised most of it. The main meal was warming and filling. I added dried rosemary for energetic balance. Three stars — would be five if the tea bags were loose leaf. Namaste 🙏

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do army ration packs last?
Around two to three years from packing, with the best-before date printed on each pack. Keep them somewhere cool and dry, and rotate the oldest packs by eating them on camping trips or days out.
Is Ration-X the same as a British Army 24 hour ration pack?
Ration-X is a UK-made civilian ration built to the same one-person, one-day format as the British Army 24 hour ration pack: fully cooked main meals in retort pouches, plus pudding, snacks, drinks and extras. It isn’t MoD issue, but it’s the same idea, available to buy one pack at a time.
Can I eat the main meals cold, straight from the pouch?
Yes. Every main meal is fully cooked, so it’s safe to eat cold straight from the pouch. Warming it in hot water, on a camping stove or with a flameless ration heater makes it more enjoyable, but it’s optional. This meets the UK GOVs prepared list as food that “can be eaten cold”.
How many 24 hour ration packs do I need for a family?
Plan on one pack per person per day. Three days for a family of four is twelve packs. Each pack holds more food than most people eat at home, so the leftovers go a long way with children.
Do ration packs need to be kept in the fridge?
No. A 24 hour ration pack needs no refrigeration before or after you buy it. A cool, dry cupboard, wardrobe or under-bed box is ideal.
Is there a vegan 24 hour ration pack?
Yes. Ration-X Menu 4 is fully vegan, with four main meals (two noodles goreng and two bean and pasta) plus peanut butter, jam, brown biscuits and boiled sweets.
What’s the difference between a 24 hour ration pack and a self-heating meal?
A 24 hour ration pack is a full day’s food for one person, eaten cold or heated however you like. A self-heating meal is a single hot meal with its own flameless heater built in, which suits grab bags and car kits. You can also buy flameless ration heaters on their own to heat the meals from a 24 hour pack.
Can I use them for camping?
Absolutely, and it’s the best way to try them. A 24hr ration pack needs no cool box and no cooking, and taking one on a trip tells you which menus you like before you stock up.
