UK — No Warnings in Force; Warm, Dry Spell Builds

Status: Confirmed. The Met Office warnings page shows no warnings anywhere in the UK from today through Saturday 26 September, although the page carried a note that warnings may be out of date, so check the Met Office app for live changes. BBC Weather says today should be mostly dry with sunny spells after early rain in the far north and south, then high pressure builds from Monday, with temperatures reaching 25 or 26C in south-east England and the low 20s across much of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and eastern Scotland. Some misty, foggy starts are likely in England and Wales on Tuesday. The same high pressure means little rain for the areas still in drought — as previously covered (19 September), hosepipe bans are in force in parts of England — and BBC Weather notes 2026 has already broken the record for days above 25C, passing the 89 days set in 1959 last week. Status: Ongoing. Heywood Road in Prestwich has been closed since 15 September, when the carriageway gave way above a collapsed sewer, and the closure could last three weeks, the Bury Times reports. United Utilities has started repairs and its roadworks information shows the closure running until 11:59pm on 6 October, so the road could reopen from 7 October if the work is completed. A local councillor previously said the ground was still sinking at the scene and that residents were concerned. It is another example of underground infrastructure failing without warning and a utility fault becoming a lengthy road closure, so plan a diversion if you use the route.

Saudi Arabia — Houthi Strikes Near Saudi Oil Sites Add to UK Fuel-Price Pressure

Status: Developing. Houthi militants in Yemen say they attacked “sensitive sites” in Riyadh and Aramco oil and gas facilities at Yanbu on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, BBC News reports. Saudi authorities said they intercepted a ballistic missile fired at Riyadh on Saturday without confirming any further strikes or casualties, while the Guardian reports thick smoke near Riyadh airport and the first air raid alerts in the capital since the Houthis escalated their attacks in July. BBC News adds that the Houthis recently seized the port of Mokha and Perim Island, a gateway to the Red Sea route Saudi Arabia has relied on for oil exports since the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed. For UK households the link is price: oil was already above $100 a barrel this week, and BBC Wales says fuel prices have spiked in recent days. Herefordshire — Burst Main Leaves Ledbury-Area Homes and Farms Without Water

Status: Confirmed. Residents and businesses, including farms, near Ledbury began reporting a loss of supply in the early hours of Saturday, with Much Marcle among the affected areas, according to BBC News. Welsh Water confirmed a burst main on its network and warned of low pressure or no water until the pipe was fixed, expecting supplies to return by late afternoon; some residents reported water coming back to normal later in the day. It is the latest burst-main outage after the Kirton in Lindsey supply failure near Scunthorpe, as previously covered (19 September), so a few days of stored drinking water per person is worth having.

UK — Markets Price Four Bank of England Rate Rises as Oil Stays Above $100

Status: Developing. A Guardian analysis says financial markets now suggest the Bank of England will raise interest rates four times before the end of next year, even after it kept rates on hold this week, as oil above $100 a barrel stokes inflation fears. It adds that the US Federal Reserve raised rates this week, the European Central Bank did so last week and the Bank of Japan lifted its rate to a 31-year high on Friday. North East & Cumbria — Low-Income Families Missing Out on NHS Healthy Start Money

Status: Confirmed. Charities warn that thousands of eligible low-income families are not claiming NHS Healthy Start payments for fresh fruit, vegetables and milk, BBC News reports. It says families earning less than £400 a week can get £4.65 a week if they are pregnant or have a child under four, and £9.30 a week for a baby under 12 months. Take-up was as low as 64% in the former Eden council area and 68% in the former Copeland area, though the latest NHS take-up figures date from 2022. The latest Defra and APHA update puts confirmed bluetongue cases this season at 1,456 premises — 1,278 in England, 146 in Wales, 32 in Scotland and none in Northern Ireland — as previously covered (19 September). On 18 September alone 56 new cases were confirmed in England (Devon added 34, taking its total to 638), eight in Wales and one in Angus, Scotland, which sits in the Free Area but has an epidemiological link to the Restricted Zone. A further 1,489 potential cases are under investigation, and all of England and Wales, plus part of south-west Scotland, is in a restricted zone. The practical action falls on livestock keepers, who are asked to be vigilant for signs and report any suspected case.

Folkestone, Kent — Suspicious Hotel Fire Forces About 280 to Evacuate, Neighbours Moved Out Over Structural Fears

Status: Ongoing. Twenty-six fire engines were sent to the Grand Burstin Hotel at about 1:05am on Saturday and around 280 people were evacuated, according to BBC News. Kent Police is treating the fire as suspicious and appealing for witnesses, and Kent Fire & Rescue Service said the “very severe” fire raised concerns about the building’s structural integrity. Those concerns have since led Folkestone & Hythe District Council to move about 90 residents of neighbouring Pavilion Court, on Marine Terrace, out of their homes on Saturday evening and into hotels in the town, KentOnline reports. Council housing officers are due to contact them on Monday while further assessments of the hotel are carried out. KentOnline says firefighters had left the scene by 11:30am today and that the one-way Harbour Approach Road outside the hotel remains closed, although Folkestone Harbour Arm is open on foot via The Viaduct. One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries, and some guests reportedly left in their nightclothes and barefoot, so if you are staying anywhere unfamiliar, note your nearest exits and keep your phone and shoes within reach.

Epping, Essex — Scrapyard Fire Prompts Advice to Keep Windows and Doors Closed

Status: Confirmed. About 40 firefighters from Essex and Hertfordshire were called to a scrapyard fire involving “a large number of vehicles” at Thornwood, Epping, at around 7:23am on Saturday, BBC News reports. Nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed because of gases from the fire, and the fire service said explosions were expected because vehicles were involved but were contained within the site. The Romford Recorder later reported that the fire had been brought under control.

Whitchurch, Hampshire — Commercial Building Fire Scaled Down After Partial Roof Collapse

Status: Ongoing. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service reports a significant fire at a commercial building off Micheldever Road on Saturday that caused major damage, including a partial roof collapse. Crews from across Hampshire tackled it with aerial platforms, and the Hampshire Chronicle says nearby residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed while it burned. The service’s Sunday morning update says it has scaled down its response after a watching brief overnight, a fire investigator is on scene to establish the cause, road closures remain in place and the public is asked to keep avoiding the area.

Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire — Industrial Fire Smoke Warning; Fire Out by 10:30pm

Status: Confirmed. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service had four engines at an industrial fire on Welshcroft Close at 7:20pm on Saturday and warned nearby residents to close their doors and windows because of a large amount of smoke, to avoid the area and not to fly drones nearby, according to the Nottingham Post. The service confirmed at 10:30pm that the blaze was out and crews were leaving, and the fire is not thought to have caused any road closures.

Status: Confirmed. A community meeting in Aviemore on Friday evening drew 310 people, an agriculture minister and a Scottish Fire and Rescue Service deputy assistant chief officer to share ideas on preventing and responding to another major Cairngorms wildfire after this summer’s fire across Glenmore and Strath Nethy, the Strathspey Herald reports.
