📰 Quick News Brief

Storm Boelo is battering Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland this morning, with gusts of 85mph overnight, power cuts on both sides of the Irish Sea, all of CalMac’s west coast ferries cancelled and an amber wind warning in force until 9pm tonight. Households under the warning should stay off the roads unless the journey is essential, keep a torch and charged power bank to hand, and expect another yellow wind warning for much of the same area on Tuesday.
🔝 Leading Story
Scotland, Cumbria, Lancashire, the North East, North Yorkshire and Northern Ireland — Storm Boelo Hits With 85mph Gusts and Power Cuts
Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (24 October), Storm Boelo arrived last night, and gusts reached 85mph at Machrihanish in Argyll and Bute overnight, with 76mph on South Uist and 74mph at Inverbervie, according to BBC News. The Met Office amber wind warning runs until 9pm tonight across Strathclyde (including Glasgow, Ayrshire, Inverclyde and Argyll and Bute), Dumfries and Galloway, Edinburgh and the Lothians, the Scottish Borders, Central, Tayside and Fife, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, the Highlands and Western Isles, Cumbria, Lancashire, Blackpool, Durham, Northumberland and North Yorkshire. Widespread gusts of 60 to 70mph are expected, with 80mph on exposed coasts. The Met Office says power cuts are likely, with knock-on effects on mobile phone coverage, and that flying debris and large coastal waves carry a danger to life.
SSE has reported power cuts in the Western Isles and Argyll, and SP Energy Networks has reported cuts around Glasgow and Edinburgh. All 30 of CalMac’s west coast ferry services are cancelled for the rest of the weekend, with some routes facing disruption until Monday. Network Rail has closed several Scottish routes as a precaution, including Kilwinning to Ayr, Kilmarnock to Stranraer, Fort William to Mallaig, Crianlarich to Oban and Helmsdale to Wick and Thurso, and the Borders line is suspended because of subsidence. Flooding has closed roads including the A78 Inverkip Road in Greenock and the A77 at Lendalfoot, and Police Scotland is asking drivers to consider whether journeys are really necessary.
In Northern Ireland, the amber warning for County Antrim and County Londonderry ran until 10am, with a yellow warning for the whole of Northern Ireland until midday. BBC News NI reports more than 1,000 homes without power near Springfield in County Fermanagh and the same again near Bushmills in County Antrim. Fallen trees have closed the Ballyrobin Road, which may affect journeys to Belfast International Airport, and the Glenshane Road near the Castledawson roundabout.
Household impact: if you’re under the amber warning, stay indoors where you can, keep away from trees and the seafront, and have your torch, power bank and battery radio ready in case the power or the mobile signal goes.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook
Scotland, Northern England, Northern Ireland and Orkney — Another Yellow Wind Warning for Tuesday
Status: Confirmed. The Met Office has issued a further yellow wind warning from 3am until midnight on Tuesday 27 October. It covers Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway, Edinburgh and the Lothians, the Scottish Borders, Central, Tayside and Fife, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray, the Highlands and Western Isles, Orkney, Cumbria, Durham, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North and South Tyneside, Northumberland, and Counties Antrim, Down and Londonderry. Monday is forecast to be warning-free. Household impact: anything Boelo loosens today (fence panels, roof tiles, garden furniture) needs fixing or tying down before Tuesday, because the same areas get another windy day.
Merseyside and Cumbria — Flood Warnings at Clubmoor, New Brighton and Keswick
Status: Ongoing. The Environment Agency has flood warnings in force for Tue Brook at Clubmoor in Liverpool, the Irish Sea at New Brighton on the Wirral, and Keswick Campsite in Cumbria. Flood alerts are also in place for the Upper River Ure, Lower River Eden, River Rede, River Wye in Herefordshire, Exmoor rivers, the Middle Exe, the River Sow and River Penk, West Dorset rivers, Climping seafront, Christchurch Harbour and the Rivers Beam and Rom in east London. Household impact: if you live or are staying near any of these, check the flood service before you travel and move valuables and important documents upstairs.

💰 Scams
UK-Wide — Rogue Roofers Are Citizens Advice’s Top Scam
Status: Confirmed. Citizens Advice says fake roofers are now its number one scam, with one household paying £3,500 for work that was never done. Doorstep selling was used in 77% of suspected roofing scams, usually someone knocking to say they’ve spotted a problem with a roof the homeowner can’t easily see. Some victims were pressured in person, including a 65-year-old woman who lives alone and was faced with two men at her door after dark demanding money. Household impact: after two storms in three days, expect cold callers offering roof and fence repairs. Get quotes from tradespeople you’ve found yourself, and never pay up front on the doorstep.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure
Hampshire — Storm Austen Power Cuts Still Being Repaired
Status: Ongoing. Hampshire Chronicle reports that more than 1,000 homes and businesses around Petersfield, Alton and Winchester were still without electricity on Saturday after Storm Austen. The largest fault, covering 1,040 customers in the GU32 and GU34 postcodes, had an estimated fix time of 8pm tonight. SSEN said just over 4,200 customers across central southern England were still waiting to be reconnected on Saturday morning, after 29,000 had their supply restored, and warned that fallen trees are slowing engineers down. Household impact: a storm power cut can last into a second or third day, so plan for more than one night without power. Under Ofgem rules, network operators pay compensation automatically for long storm outages.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
Surrey and Kent — Redhill to Tonbridge Line Closing for Five Days Over Landslip Risk
Status: Confirmed. RailAdvent reports that no trains will run between Redhill and Tonbridge from Wednesday 28 October to Sunday 1 November while Network Rail shores up an embankment near Godstone, where ground movement was detected. Engineers will drive 208 ten-metre steel sheet piles along a 126-metre stretch so that further rain doesn’t cause a dangerous slip. The line has a history of landslips, including a closure lasting several weeks in 2019-20. Replacement buses will run, and a speed restriction is in place until the work starts. Household impact: wet autumns weaken embankments, so if you rely on a rural line, know your back-up route to work or school before it closes at short notice.

North Atlantic, West of the Outer Hebrides — RAF and Coastguard Respond to Sanctioned Russian-Linked Tanker in Distress
Status: Developing. Belfast Live reports that RAF Lossiemouth and Aberdeen Coastguard joined an emergency operation after the oil products tanker Myra sent a distress alert on Saturday, around 270 to 290 nautical miles west of Northern Ireland and the Outer Hebrides, in waves of up to 8.8 metres. The ship is under UK sanctions over suspected shipping of Russian oil, and was heading from Ust-Luga in Russia to Port Said in Egypt. The cause of the alert and the condition of the crew have not been independently confirmed, and the Ministry of Defence declined to comment. Household impact: none directly today, but ageing sanctioned tankers in storm-force seas off the UK are a real oil-spill risk for coastal communities.
🚨 Recalls
Food
UK-Wide — Emma Basic Curry Cubes Japanese Style Recalled Over Undeclared Milk
Status: Confirmed. The Food Standards Agency says The Basic Ingredients Ltd is recalling 200g packs of Emma Basic Curry Cubes Japanese Style because they may contain milk that isn’t on the label. Affected best before dates are 29 December 2026, 24 February 2027, 18 March 2027, 12 May 2027, 23 July 2027, 14 September 2027, 12 October 2027 and 26 March 2028. Household impact: if anyone in your home has a milk allergy or intolerance, don’t eat it. Return it to the shop for a full refund.
Consumer Products
UK-Wide — Toddler Ghost Costume Sold on Amazon Recalled Over Strangulation Risk
Status: Confirmed. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has issued a recall for the QhgPnt Toddler Ghost Costume (Amazon ASIN B0HBBWM2B8), a white fabric costume labelled “80CM”. It comes with a head cord that’s longer than the law allows for young children’s toys, and the plastic bag it’s packed in is thinner than the legal minimum, which is a suffocation risk. Household impact: if you’ve bought one for Halloween, stop using it, keep it away from children and contact the seller for a refund or replacement.
💷 Cost of Living
Teesdale, Weardale, Northumberland and North Yorkshire — Heating Oil More Than Double Last Year’s Price
Status: Confirmed. BBC News reports that rural households off the gas grid are paying around £600 for a 500-litre delivery of heating oil, about £1.19 a litre, compared with around 52p a litre in October 2025. In Middleton-in-Teesdale, where there’s no mains gas, a full 1,000-litre fill can cost well over £1,000. Upper Teesdale Agricultural Support Services runs a buying group that pools orders from 500 litres upwards and saves around 3p a litre. Household impact: if you heat with oil, ask locally about a buying group, check your tank level now rather than waiting until it’s nearly empty, and budget for the higher price before the cold sets in.

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day
The clocks went back last night, so it’s dark an hour earlier from tonight. That’s a good moment to put a torch by the front door and another by your bed, and to check the batteries in both. In a storm power cut, the first thing you need is a light you can find in the dark, not one at the bottom of a kitchen drawer.
