📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Storm Boelo killed two men on Sunday, both struck by falling trees, one at Mid Kelton near Castle Douglas and one in a car in Finchley, north London. Storms Austen and Boelo between them cut power to 838,700 properties, and more than 90,000 were still waiting at 7pm last night. Another yellow wind warning covers Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England from 3am tomorrow, so anyone still on a generator or torchlight should charge everything they can today while the weather is quieter.

🔝 Leading Story

Dumfries and Galloway, Finchley, Largs, Ayrshire and Northern Ireland — Storm Boelo Leaves Two Dead and 90,000 Properties Without Power

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (25 October), Storm Boelo brought 85mph gusts to Scotland. It has now turned deadly. The Guardian reports that a 60-year-old man was killed by a falling tree on a minor road at Mid Kelton, near Castle Douglas, at about 10.30am on Sunday. A man in his 20s died when a tree fell onto the car he was driving on Dollis Road in Finchley, north London, at about 12.40pm, according to BBC News. Two women were taken to hospital after being hit by another falling tree in Aberfeldy, Perth and Kinross, and two pedestrians had to be pulled out from under fallen scaffolding on Streatham High Road.

The Energy Networks Association says 838,700 properties lost power across Britain during Storms Austen and Boelo. By 7pm on Sunday, 90,600 were still cut off, and the ENA said the continuing severe weather was “limiting network engineers’ opportunities to safely start the work”. Northern Powergrid expected 13,000 customers across Yorkshire and the North East to stay without power beyond Sunday night. In Northern Ireland, NIE Networks had 7,000 customers off on Sunday and is reminding people to treat any broken overhead line or damaged pole as live.

The Clyde coast took the worst of the flooding. The Skelmorlie to Largs road has been badly damaged and businesses in Largs town centre were flooded overnight. Police Scotland evacuated dangerous buildings in Ayr and helped 15 guests to safety from a flooded caravan park in Ballantrae, and many local roads are still shut by debris and fallen trees. Cluanie Inn in the Highlands recorded 130mm of rain.

Today is the gap between storms. The Met Office has no warnings in force today, but its yellow wind warning runs from 3am to midnight tomorrow across Strathclyde, Dumfries and Galloway, the Lothians and Borders, Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, the Highlands and Western Isles, Orkney, Counties Antrim, Down and Londonderry, Cumbria and the North East from Northumberland to Durham. Gusts of 50 to 60mph are possible widely, with 70mph or more on exposed coasts, and the Met Office says power cuts and loss of mobile signal are possible. It isn’t yet clear whether the system will be named.

Household impact: if your power is back, use today to recharge power banks, refill any water you used and put garden furniture, bins and trampolines away before tomorrow’s wind arrives.

UK-Wide — Charity Urges Households to Join the Priority Services Register Before the Next Storm

Status: Confirmed. Following last week’s government Be Ready campaign, free money advice service Money Wellness is urging people who would struggle in a power cut to check whether they can join the Priority Services Register, reports WalesOnline. The charity made 38,326 referrals to the register in the past 12 months, up from 32,845 the year before. The register is free and is run by energy suppliers and electricity network operators. Depending on your circumstances, it can mean advance warning of planned power cuts, priority updates during an outage and a password scheme so you know a caller is genuine.

It isn’t only for older people. You may qualify if you have a disability, a long-term or serious illness, a mental health condition, medical equipment that runs on electricity or children under five, or if you’re pregnant or recovering from a hospital stay. Water companies run their own registers, which can include bottled water deliveries if your supply is cut off.

Household impact: if anyone in your home relies on powered medical equipment, signing up today means your network operator knows about you before tomorrow’s wind arrives.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, East Yorkshire, West Sussex, Merseyside and Cumbria — Ten Flood Warnings in Force

Status: Ongoing. The Environment Agency has 10 flood warnings in force this morning, which means flooding is expected, plus 65 flood alerts. Most of the warnings are on the east coast: the Essex coast from Clacton to Lee-over-Sands, West Mersea and The Strood, Maldon town waterfront and the Hythe, Bawdsey Quay and Felixstowe Ferry, the tidal River Yare at Cantley, Brundall and Reedham, and the tidal River Waveney from Ellingham Marshes to Belton. A new warning was issued at 6.54am for the North Sea coast at Easington and Kilnsea in East Yorkshire. Warnings also remain for Bosham and West Itchenor in West Sussex, the Irish Sea at New Brighton and Keswick Campsite.

In Scotland, The Guardian reports SEPA had 10 flood warnings and 11 flood alerts in place early this morning, and Natural Resources Wales had nine flood alerts.

Household impact: if you live on the Essex, Suffolk or Norfolk coast or tidal rivers, check your local warning before high tide, move valuables and the car to higher ground and keep away from sea walls and promenades.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Stansted Airport, Exmoor and the Isle of Wight — Power Faults Stop Airport Security and Leave Homes Cut Off for Nearly 60 Hours

Status: Confirmed. A power surge “that affected the airport and local area” knocked out security, baggage and immigration systems at Stansted Airport on Sunday afternoon, leaving hundreds of passengers in queues of up to two hours, reports AOL. The airport says all systems are now back in service.

On Exmoor, Storm Austen brought down high-voltage overhead lines supplying nearly 1,500 homes and businesses between Battleton and Brushford, near Dulverton, at about 11.15am on Friday, reports the West Somerset Free Press. Most were back within an hour, but National Grid’s estimated fix time for the rest slipped three times, and eight customers were still waiting on Sunday night, nearly 60 hours after the fault. In Dulverton, one resident with a solid-fuel Rayburn opened her home so neighbours could heat food and fill flasks.

On the Isle of Wight, 549 households across 48 postcodes in Bembridge and St Helens lost power on Sunday morning, with SSEN saying the two storms had caused disruption across its network, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.

Household impact: a repair estimate is a best guess, not a promise. Plan to cope for three days without power, not three hours, and know how you’d heat food and water without electricity.

💧 Water & Utilities

Somerset, Bristol and Derbyshire — Wessex Water Reservoirs Down to a Quarter Full

Status: Ongoing. As previously covered (24 October), reservoirs across the South West are very low. They have fallen further. Wessex Water’s surface reservoirs are now at 25% of capacity, with groundwater also below its long-term average, reports Wells Nub News. The Environment Agency has put Wessex Water at operational drought level three on a four-level scale and says hosepipe bans stay in place across both Wessex Water’s and Bristol Water’s areas, covering towns including Street, Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet. Bristol Water’s reservoirs ended September at 44%, and Chew Valley and Clatworthy reservoirs have been classed as exceptionally low. September flows on the River Tone at Bishops Hull and the Bristol Frome at Frenchay were the lowest on record for that month.

Further north, Severn Trent says Ladybower Reservoir in Derbyshire’s Upper Derwent Valley is 31.6% full, against a usual 50 to 100% at this time of year, reports the Yorkshire Post. The ruins of Derwent village, flooded in 1943, are showing again. Ladybower supplies Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester and Derby.

Household impact: a wet weekend hasn’t ended the drought. The Environment Agency says significant further rain is still needed, so keep your stored drinking water topped up and stick to the hosepipe ban where it applies.

UK Security News

UK-Wide — Defence Secretary Says Britain Has “A Little Over 1,000 Days” to Be Ready for War

Status: Confirmed. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has warned that Britain must “prepare for the worst” and be ready to fight a war within about three years, reports the Manchester Evening News. Writing in The Daily Telegraph, he said that “by 2030 their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack. That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win.” He didn’t name a country, but the warning comes amid reports of Russian hybrid activity against NATO countries, including trawlers being used to spy on Britain’s undersea cables. It also comes days after the government’s Be Ready campaign asked households to keep three days of supplies in case a cyber-attack or severe weather shuts down essential services.

Household impact: no immediate action is needed, but a home that can cope with three days without power, water or phone signal is ready for a storm or a cable cut alike.

See our Special Report “Is Russia a Threat to the UK?” first published on 26 July 2026.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ Recharge power banks, torches and radios today while the weather is quieter
  • ☑️ Secure bins, garden furniture, trampolines and sheds before tomorrow’s 3am wind warning in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England
  • ☑️ If anyone at home relies on powered medical equipment, join the Priority Services Register with your network operator
  • ☑️ On the Essex, Suffolk or Norfolk coast, check your flood warning before high tide and keep off sea walls
  • ☑️ Treat any fallen power line as live, keep children and pets away and report it on 105 (03457 643 643 in Northern Ireland)
  • ☑️ Refill any stored drinking water you used during the power cut

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

The people who coped best on Exmoor this weekend had a way to heat water that didn’t need the mains. Before tomorrow’s wind, fill a couple of good flasks with boiling water. They’ll keep it hot for most of the day, so a cup of tea, a hot water bottle or a pot noodle is only a kettle-free pour away if the power goes again. If you do cook on a camping stove, use it in a well-ventilated room with a carbon monoxide alarm, and never bring a barbecue indoors.
