Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Parts of the UK are entering a second week of heatwave conditions with Amber and Yellow heat health alerts in force and “exceptional” wildfire risk across parts of southern England, so check on vulnerable neighbours and skip the disposable barbecue this week. Overnight, the US and Iran exchanged fresh strikes after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard struck a Cyprus-flagged ship in the Strait of Hormuz and closed the waterway again, raising the risk of higher fuel and energy costs in the weeks ahead. Hosepipe bans now cover a large swathe of England, with Southern Water, South East Water and Anglian Water already in force and Cambridge Water and Affinity Water’s wide catchment — including London — following from Friday, so check your water company’s rules before reaching for the hose or sprinkler.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

England & Wales — Amber and Yellow Heat Health Alerts, “Exceptional” Wildfire Risk

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (11 July), the heatwave has now run into a second week. The UK Health Security Agency has renewed Amber heat health alerts for the South West and West Midlands, and Yellow alerts for the rest of England, running from 09:00 BST today until 21:00 on Wednesday, with highs of 31-33°C possible in south-west England and south-east Wales today. Natural England has now classed large parts of southern England and the south Midlands at “exceptional” wildfire risk, with much of England and Wales at “very high” risk through the week, as the prolonged dry spell and strengthening winds dry out vegetation further. Anyone near heathland, moorland or woodland should avoid disposable barbecues, campfires and discarding cigarettes outdoors this week. Source: BBC Weather. FSA Alert — Capri-Sun Multipack Mislabelling

Status: Confirmed. The Food Standards Agency has recalled specific Capri-Sun multipacks after some pouches labelled “Orange Zero” were found to actually contain the standard sugared Orange variant. This matters for anyone managing sugar intake, including people with diabetes — check multipack batch codes against the FSA notice before serving to children on restricted sugar diets.

Middle East — US and Iran Exchange Fresh Strikes, Strait of Hormuz Closed Again

Status: Developing. As previously covered (11 July), tensions over the Strait of Hormuz have escalated again overnight. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps struck a Cyprus-flagged cargo ship, the MV GFS Galaxy, on an unapproved route through the strait, forcing its crew to abandon ship into a lifeboat, according to the UK’s Maritime Trade Operations centre. The US responded with strikes on more than 140 Iranian military targets; Iran said it hit a US base in Jordan in retaliation, while the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain reported responding to missiles and drones. Shipping data shows transits through the US-recommended Hormuz route have collapsed to a handful of vessels a day, and the strait carries more than a fifth of the world’s oil and gas supply — continued disruption raises the risk of higher UK fuel and energy costs in the weeks ahead. 💧 Water & Utilities

Hampshire & Isle of Wight — Southern Water Hosepipe Ban Continues

Status: Ongoing. Southern Water’s hosepipe ban across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight — affecting around a million customers — has been in force since Friday 10 July, the second such ban in the area in as many years, after the company said levels in the River Test had become “critically low.” The company has said its customers in neighbouring Sussex will not face a ban, describing that area’s supply as more resilient. Kent — South East Water Hosepipe Ban Continues

Status: Ongoing. South East Water’s ban across Kent, covering around 850,000 customers, remains in force amid record demand during the prolonged heatwave. Source: South East Water.

East of England — Anglian Water Hosepipe Ban Continues

Status: Ongoing. Anglian Water’s temporary use ban across the East of England — its first in a decade — remains in force as the region, the driest in the UK, faces continued dry conditions on the edge of drought. Dr Geoff Darch, the company’s head of strategic asset planning, said teams were “working 24/7 to keep taps flowing.” Source: Anglian Water.

Cambridgeshire — Cambridge Water Hosepipe Ban Takes Effect Friday

Status: Confirmed. Cambridge Water has announced its first hosepipe ban in more than 30 years, affecting around 350,000 customers across Cambridgeshire, enforceable from 01:00 BST on Friday 17 July, after what the company called record demand for water. Source: Cambridge Water.

Hertfordshire, Beds, Berks, Bucks, Essex, Surrey & London — Affinity Water Hosepipe Ban Takes Effect Friday

Status: Confirmed. Affinity Water has announced a new temporary use ban across its supply area — Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Surrey and parts of London — taking effect from 00:01 on Friday 17 July, after demand rose sharply during the prolonged heatwave. Breaching any hosepipe ban can carry a fine of up to £1,000 under the Water Industry Act. Thames Water has not yet announced a ban but is asking customers across its own area to voluntarily cut back on hosepipe and sprinkler use amid what it calls “exceptionally high demand.” Source: Affinity Water.

Global — El Niño Warning Adds to Iran War Food Price Pressure

Status: Monitoring. Economists are warning that a “super” El Niño weather cycle forming for 2026-27 could cause a severe global food price shock lasting into 2028, compounding food prices already pushed to a three-year high by the Iran war’s disruption to shipping and energy costs. The impact is not yet visible at UK tills, but sustained global food and shipping cost pressure typically feeds into supermarket prices within months. Source: The Guardian. England & Wales — Wildfire Incidents Rising as Dry Spell Continues

Status: Ongoing. Fire services across southern England have been tackling multiple heathland and grassland fires this week as the prolonged dry spell leaves vegetation tinder-dry (see Weather section for today’s “exceptional” risk rating). The National Fire Chiefs Council warned: “When the weather stays hot and dry, it only takes one spark to start a wildfire. What can begin as a small fire can spread incredibly quickly, putting people, homes, wildlife and our countryside at risk.” Avoid disposable barbecues, campfires and discarding cigarettes in open countryside this week. UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

With “exceptional” wildfire risk across parts of southern England this week, the simplest thing you can do is skip the disposable barbecue on parks or dry grassland — a discarded one is one of the most common causes of wildfires during a dry spell like this. If you want to barbecue, stick to your own garden on a hard, non-flammable surface, and keep a bucket of water nearby just in case. UK Wildfire Risk — What Every Household Needs to Know
