📰 Quick News Brief

Several UK meat suppliers have had their fridges tampered with overnight in the same kind of hack that has hit supermarkets across Europe, and the trade body has reported it to the National Cyber Security Centre. The NCSC’s own annual report, out today, warns that AI-powered malware is “highly likely” to be used against Britain’s power, transport and food infrastructure by 2028. A few days of food that doesn’t need a fridge is the simplest buffer a household can have.
🔝 Leading Story
UK — Meat Suppliers’ Fridges Hacked Overnight
Status: Developing. As reported yesterday (2 November), supermarket fridges and freezers were hacked across Europe. It has now reached the UK. Several British meat suppliers reported their fridges being tampered with overnight, The Grocer reports. All of them were on systems run by Dixell XWEB software. One supplier’s fridges were set to defrost every hour, and another’s were set to 100°F.
The Association of Independent Meat Suppliers has told its members to check their fridges “as a matter of urgency” and has reported the attacks to the National Cyber Security Centre. It says it doesn’t yet know whether any meat has been destroyed. Across Europe, the Guardian reports that chains in at least seven countries were hit on Monday, and the EU’s food commissioner called it a deliberate attempt to disrupt the food supply chain.
No UK supermarket has reported empty shelves from this. But it shows that cold food can be lost somewhere in the chain before it ever reaches a shop. Food that doesn’t need a fridge or freezer carries on working whatever happens to the cold chain.

Long-term food storage
Most households have a few days of food at best, but real disruptions in the UK can last far longer and quickly expose that gap. This guide shows you how to build a practical, affordable food reserve that actually works in the real world—not just on paper.

🏛️ Government Preparedness & Resilience Policy
UK — New Transport Resilience Strategy Published
Status: Confirmed. The Department for Transport has published a strategy setting out how the UK transport system should prepare for disruption over the next five to ten years. It points to Storm Darragh’s damage at Holyhead port, the substation fire that closed Heathrow for 23 hours, this year’s extreme heat and the Middle East conflict’s effect on fuel supply as recent warnings. It says the system needs “resilient, well-prepared people” as well as robust infrastructure, and the government will look at the specific risks facing vulnerable transport users. For households, that means planning for being stuck somewhere: a charged phone, water, a warm layer and a snack in the car or bag you carry every day.

UK — Fake “Compensation” Offered After Online Complaint
Status: Confirmed. A Bristol holidaymaker lost £900 after fraudsters posing as Ryanair offered her £400 compensation, the Glasgow Times reports. She had complained publicly online about rain-soaked seats on her flight. Scammers watch public complaints to companies and reply pretending to be customer service. A real refund never needs your card PIN, a payment from you or a login code, so go back to the company through its own website or app.
⚡ Power & Infrastructure
King’s Lynn, Norfolk — Building Fire Cuts Power to 108 Homes
Status: Confirmed. UK Power Networks had to cut the supply to 108 customers on Coulton Close in North Lynn on Sunday evening while four fire crews tackled a building fire, Lynn News reports. All but one customer had power back within about two hours. A fire in a neighbouring building can put your lights out with no warning, so keep a torch where you can find it in the dark.
XtraLite NiteSafe
The NiteSafe is a dual-function device that works as both a plug-in nightlight and an emergency torch. It sits in a standard UK plug socket, charges continuously, and the moment mains power fails, it automatically illuminates.
💧 Water & Utilities
Basingstoke, Hampshire — School Closed After Losing Its Water Supply
Status: Confirmed. The Vyne School closed to all pupils and staff on Monday after a “serious water leak” left the site with no water supply, the Basingstoke Gazette reports. A Year 11 mock exam has been moved to Friday. One leak was enough to shut a whole school for the day. A few bottles of water at home means a supply cut at home doesn’t close yours.
Sussex — Ardingly Reservoir Still Below 20%
Status: Monitoring. As previously covered (1 November), reservoirs are still low despite the storms. Ardingly Reservoir is just 19.1% full and Arlington is at 40.5%, The Argus reports. One local councillor warned that standpipes could be needed if the drought carries on, but that is a councillor’s warning, not a plan from the water company.

UK — NCSC Warns of AI-Powered Attacks on Infrastructure by 2028
Status: Confirmed. The UK’s critical national infrastructure should be braced for a ransomware attack using AI-powered malware by 2028, the National Cyber Security Centre says in its annual report, published today. That covers energy, transport, food, health and finance, the Guardian reports. NCSC chief executive Dr Richard Horne is expected to warn of “a real prospect of an unprecedented rise in the number of cyber incidents” in the coming months, because AI lets attackers find and exploit long-standing weaknesses far faster. He will say that leaders who fail to act will have to explain themselves “when food isn’t on shelves, lights aren’t on, businesses have gone under.” The report is aimed at organisations, but the message for households is the same as ever: plan for a few days without the shops, the power or the internet.

International Security News
Iran — US Carries Out Strikes on Qeshm Island
Status: Developing. The US reportedly carried out limited strikes on Iran’s Qeshm Island late on Monday, and Brent crude rose 2.2% to $107.15 a barrel this morning, according to the Guardian. Oil had dropped 11% on Monday on hopes of more time for diplomacy. Before the war began on 28 February, Brent traded at around $72. Separately, Iran has labelled the Royal Navy and RAF terrorist organisations in response to the UK outlawing support for its Revolutionary Guards, the Portsmouth News reports. The oil price swings feed straight through to petrol, diesel and heating oil.
🚢 Supply Chain
England — Vegetable Growers Weigh Up Planting Less in 2027
Status: Developing. British vegetable growers are considering cutting back what they plant next year because they’re worried about having enough water for irrigation, FreshPlaza reports. National reservoir storage was at 54% in late October, about 22 percentage points below average, and the Environment Agency has warned that low river flows could limit how much water growers can take to refill their reservoirs over winter. Industry groups will present their case at the House of Lords on 17 November. Less planting now would mean less home-grown veg on the shelves next year.
💷 Cost of Living
UK — EDF Predicts a 27% Rise in the Price Cap in January
Status: Developing. EDF forecasts the energy price cap could rise from £1,723 to £2,192 a year from January, and a typical bill could reach £2,389 from April, the Birmingham Mail reports. EDF blames rising wholesale gas prices. This is a supplier’s forecast, not the Ofgem announcement, but it’s a good reason to check your meter readings and direct debit now.

Status: Confirmed. British Gas agents will be able to force-fit prepayment meters in homes again from this winter, the Birmingham Mail reports. The practice was halted after a Times investigation. Ofgem says installing a meter under warrant “should only be a last resort”. If you’re behind on your energy bills, contact your supplier early to agree a payment plan.
UK — Cold Weather Payments Now Running
Status: Confirmed. The DWP’s Cold Weather Payment scheme is running from 1 November to 31 March, paying £25 to eligible households on certain benefits for each seven-day period when the average temperature in their area is, or is forecast to be, 0°C or below, the Northern Echo reports. Payments are made automatically to people who qualify.
UK — Ryanair Expects Fares to Rise by up to 20%
Status: Confirmed. Ryanair expects European airlines to raise ticket prices by up to 20%, and its own jet fuel bill to rise by about £1.6bn next year because of the Middle East conflict, the Guardian reports. If you’re booking flights for next year, prices are more likely to go up than down.

💡 UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day
If your freezer is full, write down what’s in it and stick the list on the door. If the power goes off, or the food gets warm for any other reason, you’ll know what to use first without opening the door. A closed, full freezer stays cold far longer than one being opened every few minutes.
