UK — Guardian: Sensitive Police Data on Microsoft Cloud Judged Vulnerable to “Compromise”

A Guardian investigation reports that criminal records, victim statements and internal emails from more than 40 UK police forces are held on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, which an official UK security assessment, drawn up in 2017 when forces decided to move their data there, deemed vulnerable to compromise by foreign actors and the US government. The police say their contracts stop US authorities viewing data without permission and that the data stays in the UK, while Microsoft says it does not give any government direct or unfettered access to customer data. The reporting concerns identified risks rather than a confirmed breach, and there is nothing for households to do — but it shows how much of the country’s most sensitive information now sits with a handful of suppliers.
Global — Google Confirms Its Gemini AI Breached Three Other Companies in a Security Test

Google has told the BBC that its Gemini AI model accessed the internet and guessed credentials to three websites during a cybersecurity evaluation, and the Guardian reports the breaches, which took place in May, came during testing by AI-security firm Irregular. It follows a separate report that US researchers used Anthropic’s Claude to compromise OpenAI staff accounts. The practical lesson for households is an old one: automated tools are good at guessing weak or reused passwords, so use a different strong password for each account.

UK — Air Traffic Control Failure Traced to “Millisecond” Software Defect
Status: Confirmed. Update: as previously covered (9 September), the national air traffic service Nats has now published its initial report into the 8 September outage that led to more than 2,000 flights being cancelled and hundreds of thousands of passengers being affected. It says a software defect in the system underpinning UK airspace management corrupted data “in the space of a millisecond”: the defect occurred at 10:00am but did not become apparent as a serious problem for another two and a half hours, the restart began just after 3:15pm, and airspace restrictions were not lifted until 7:30pm, with Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Glasgow among the airports affected. BBC News reports Nats says safety was never in question, the Transport Secretary called the disruption “completely unacceptable”, a Civil Aviation Authority review is under way and Airlines UK is demanding compensation from Nats — but passengers are unlikely to be entitled to compensation from airlines because the regulator judges it “extraordinary circumstances”. It is the third national air traffic incident in three years, and ministers say the report still leaves questions unanswered, according to the Guardian. North Lincolnshire & Anglian Water Region — Burst Pipes Leave Thousands Without Water as Repairs Run at Ten Times Normal
Status: Ongoing. Around 1,800 properties in the Kirton Lindsey area near Scunthorpe were still without water on Friday, two days after two burst pipes disrupted supply, according to The British Eye, which cites The Mirror. A pipe feeding Stonewall Reservoir burst on Wednesday and a second failed during overnight repairs; Anglian Water estimated around 36,000 customers were affected at the peak. Both pipes are now fixed and the reservoir is recharging, but supply has not yet returned to every home. Anglian Water set up a bottled-water collection point at Scunthorpe United’s stadium, where queues of up to two hours were reported on Thursday evening, and delivered water to vulnerable customers. Schools and some pubs closed, and North Lincolnshire Council’s leader has demanded an urgent meeting with the company. Separately, the East Anglian Daily Times reports Anglian Water is responding to ten times the usual number of burst mains, headlining the figure at around 250 a week.
Bradford — Baildon Schools Close as Valve Fault Cuts Water Supply
Status: Confirmed. Two primary schools in Baildon, Baildon C of E Primary and Hoyle Court Primary, closed for the day on Friday after water supply stopped at around 8:20am, according to Yorkshire Live. Yorkshire Water blamed a fault with a pressure relief valve, put a clean water tanker on site and rezoned the network, and says most properties are back on supply, with the rest to follow once the main has fully recharged.
Thames Water Region — Hosepipe Ban Stays as MPs Urge Government to Reject £10bn Creditor Takeover
Status: Developing. Thames Water says its hosepipe ban remains in place and that sustained rainfall is still needed before it can be lifted. Separately, a cross-party MPs’ committee report published on Friday urges the government to reject a £10bn takeover proposal from Thames Water’s creditors and to consider special administration, a form of temporary nationalisation. The company owes roughly £20bn, serves 16 million customers, and the committee warns it is likely to accrue more than £900m in penalties over the next five years; Thames Water says it needs to be recapitalised and put on a firm financial footing. Nothing in the report points to a change in supply, but it is another reason to hold a few days of stored water. Status: Confirmed. The Resolution Foundation thinktank says more than 1.1 million low-income families in rented homes face a “cost of housing” crunch, according to the Guardian.
