In our previous review of Aquatabs, we discussed how to chemically purify water. however, if your source water looks like a muddy puddle or a silt-heavy stream, dropping a tablet straight in isn’t enough. You need to remove the “grit”, and any other solids, first.
Enter the Forest Fundamentals Millbank Bag (Second Edition). Handmade in the UK, this is a modern evolution of the classic British military filtration bag. It is designed to solve the biggest problem in water procurement: turbidity.
Forest Fundamentals Millbank Bag
The bag is handmade from a thicker 12oz unbleached cotton canvas. Unbleached canvas not undergone any chemical treatments, it’s safer for the environment and us.

What is a Millbank Bag?
At its core, a Millbank Bag is a mechanical filtration device made from heavy-duty canvas. It doesn’t use chemicals or complex pumps. Instead, it relies on the weave of the 12oz unbleached cotton canvas to strain out sand, mud, silt, and organic detritus.
⚠️ Important Clarification: While the Amazon listing mentions “Reverse Osmosis” in the technical specs, this is NOT reverse osmosis. This is a gravity-fed mechanical sediment filter. It removes physical particles (sand, silt, mud, debris) but does NOT purify water. You must still boil, chemically treat, or UV-sterilise the filtered water before drinking.
Key Upgrades in the Second Edition
Forest Fundamentals has taken the original military design and made several “prepper-friendly” improvements:
- Taped Seams & Double Stitching: Traditional bags can leak from the sides; this version is reinforced to ensure water only exits through the canvas face.
- Survival Lanyard: The bag is hung via a 1-metre 550 paracord lanyard. Cleverly, this cord contains a wax-infused cotton strand.
- Waterproof Carry Pouch: One of the biggest complaints about Millbank bags is that they stay wet for ages. This kit includes a 210D Nylon dry bag, so you can stow the wet filter in your rucksack without soaking your spare socks.
How to Use It (The “Swell” Method)
One of the best features of this bag is that the instructions are printed directly on the canvas. You don’t have to worry about forgetting the technique in a high-stress situation.
- Soak: Submerge the bag in water and rub the fabric together. This “swells” the cotton fibres, creating the tight weave necessary for filtration.
- Fill: Fill the bag to the top with your raw water.
- The “First Run”: Allow the water to filter out until it reaches the “indicator line” (usually the first few inches). Discard this water—it’s used to flush the outside of the bag.
- Collect: Place your clean container underneath and collect the clear, sediment-free water.
Real-World Feedback
UK bushcrafters and preppers have given this a 4.7 out of 5-star rating. One user recently noted:
“I filtered water from a chalk stream… the bag did contain some slime/algae and other detritus. The water was boiled for purification and tasted clean. The tea I made was better than my home tap water.”
Another UK reviewers comments:
“FYI this is only the first stage of filtration and you will need a filter or purification tabs after you have used this.”
Top quality bag from Forest Fundamentals,
Love the fact is has the instructions for use printed on the side of it, perfect for someone who may not know how to use it in a situation where the main user can’t.
Nice little carry pouch as well,
Highly recommend
I used my Millbank bag for the first time at the weekend. I followed the instructions first, by wetting and rubbing the bag throughly. I then filtered water from a chalk stream. It was beautifully clear water anyway, but after filtering it the bag did contain some slime/alge and other detritus. The water was boiled for purification and tasted clean. The tea I made was better than my home tap water. The bag was dried by attaching it to the outside of my rucksack. Once home, I turned it inside out and brushed it and then pegged it on my washing line to be sanitized by the sunshine. Top quality, small, light, useful. Very good value.
Limitations ⚠️
⚠️ Not a Purifier: The Millbank Bag removes sediment, silt, and debris only. It does NOT kill bacteria, viruses, or parasites. You MUST use secondary treatment (boiling, [purification tablets](https://ukprepperhub.co.uk/aquatabs-review/), or UV) after filtering.
⚠️ Chemical Contaminants: Like all mechanical filters, the Millbank Bag does NOT remove heavy metals, agricultural chemicals, road traffic pollution, or industrial runoff. For chemically contaminated water, distillation or activated carbon filtration is required.
🧼 Maintenance Required: The canvas must be thoroughly dried after each use to prevent mould growth. If stored damp, it can become unusable. Hang in direct sunlight or a well-ventilated area to sanitise and dry completely.
📏 Heavy When Wet: While the included dry bag helps, the canvas remains heavy and damp for hours after use. Plan storage accordingly in your kit.
Verdict
If you live in an area with silty water or you want a filter that will never “break” or run out of batteries, the Forest Fundamentals Millbank Bag is essential. It’s a “buy once, cry once” piece of kit that turns brown water clear, protecting your expensive survival filters (like a LifeStraw or Sawyer) from clogging up.
