Wessex Water’s first hosepipe ban in 50 years takes effect today, banning garden hoses for 1.4 million customers across Bath, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire as record demand meets deepening drought. Rain due later this week won’t fix the drought, but forecasters warn it could trigger flash flooding on parched, rock-hard ground — so watch local surface water risk even as the taps stay dry outdoors.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook
England — First Meaningful Rain in Weeks, But Flash Flood Risk on Parched Ground
Status: Developing. A cold front moving in from the Atlantic tonight is set to bring the “first meaningful rain for a long time” to parts of England, according to the Met Office, with temperatures forecast to fall by as much as 15°C compared with last Thursday and dip around 3°C below the seasonal norm by Thursday. No amber or red weather warnings are currently in force. After weeks of scorching, bone-dry conditions, the change brings its own risk: rain falling on baked, rock-hard ground can’t soak in fast enough, so intense downpours could bring surface water and flash flooding in places rather than easing the drought.

England — Met Office Flags Possible Sixth Heatwave in September
Status: Monitoring. The Met Office’s long-range outlook for 30 August to 13 September says there is “a chance that late-season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south,” though it stops short of forecasting a definite heatwave. It would be the UK’s sixth heatwave of a summer that has already brought record-breaking temperatures (38.1°C at the fifth heatwave’s peak), widespread drought, and more wildfires across England and Wales in 2026 than in the whole of 2025. Nothing to act on yet, but worth bearing in mind if you’ve only just restocked cooling and hydration supplies after the last spell — the Met Office itself flags longer-range forecasts like this as less reliable, with clearer detail expected closer to the time.

Status: Confirmed. The NHS national booking system opened today, allowing millions of eligible people to book their flu jab as the health service starts winter preparations earlier than in previous years. Eligible groups include over-65s, pregnant women, and people with certain long-term health conditions — check your eligibility and book online or through your GP surgery.

UK — MHRA Recall: ResMed Astral 100 & 150 Ventilators (Day 2)
Status: Confirmed. The MHRA has issued a National Patient Safety Alert for ResMed Astral 100 and 150 ventilators, along with associated circuit board spares manufactured before October 2024, after identifying a fault that can cause an unexpected interruption to ventilation therapy. Anyone using an affected device at home should follow the manufacturer’s Field Safety Notice and contact their clinical team if unsure whether their unit is affected.

UK Employers — Vodafone Among Firms Hit by Azure Credential Theft Campaign
Status: Confirmed. A threat actor is selling employee data allegedly stolen from several large organisations’ Microsoft Azure and Entra systems using compromised login credentials, including around 425,000 records linked to Vodafone alongside McDonald’s, Tata Consultancy Services and HCL Technologies. The data reportedly includes employee names, emails, phone numbers, job titles and workplace addresses — exactly the details used to craft convincing follow-up phishing attempts. If you work for, or deal with, an affected organisation, be wary of unexpected emails or calls referencing your job title or workplace.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
East Sussex — Lewes to Haywards Heath Line Shut For At Least 10 More Days
Status: Ongoing. The railway between Lewes and Haywards Heath remains closed following last week’s derailment near Lewes, in which three carriages left the tracks and around 20 people were injured. Network Rail says the complex recovery operation means the line will stay shut for at least another 10 days, with rail replacement buses running via Cooksbridge and Plumpton and disruption continuing across routes linking Brighton, Eastbourne and Seaford.

Hampshire — New Forest Wildfire Road Closures Causing Gridlock, Emergency Access Fears
Status: Ongoing. The A31 has been closed through the New Forest since 9 August because of a wildfire that started in a van and has grown to roughly the size of 230 football pitches. Drivers are increasingly ignoring the official closures and diverting through the small hamlet of Linwood, where the single-lane road has repeatedly gridlocked — Hampshire County Council, Forestry England and the fire service have all warned this could block emergency vehicles from reaching the fire or the New Forest’s free-roaming animals. The tailbacks have spread well beyond Linwood itself, with slow-moving traffic for more than eight days affecting Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Salisbury and Lyndhurst during what’s normally the peak summer tourist period. If you’re travelling through the New Forest, follow the official diversion rather than a navigation app, which may still route you onto unsuitable roads.

Bath, Somerset, Dorset & Wiltshire — Wessex Water’s First Hosepipe Ban Since 1976
Status: Confirmed. From today, Wessex Water’s 1.4 million customers across Bath, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and parts of Gloucestershire and Hampshire are banned from using a hosepipe — for watering gardens, washing cars, cleaning patios and driveways, or filling paddling pools. It’s the company’s first restriction in 50 years, since the drought of 1976, triggered by more than 40 days of record-breaking demand and the region’s formal drought declaration. Everyday indoor use — drinking, washing, cooking — is unaffected, but breaching the ban can mean a fine of up to £1,000.
Gardena Rain Barrel Pump

Kent — 8,000+ South East Water Customers Without Supply for Fourth Day
Status: Ongoing. More than 8,000 South East Water customers across Kent have been without normal supply for four days, with Cranbrook and Benenden the worst affected. Bottled-water stations are open in Cranbrook, Canterbury, Challock and Herne Bay (most Herne Bay customers should now have supply restored). The company blames prolonged hot weather, high demand, recent pipe bursts and overnight power issues, and says it cannot yet give a firm restoration date. Defra publicly criticised the response as “simply not good enough,” saying South East Water “needs to go further and faster to reduce leaks and follow their drought plans.” If you’re in an affected area, check South East Water’s incident page before travelling to a bottled-water station, and keep some water in reserve given the company itself describes the picture as “ongoing, changing.”

England & Wales — Wider Water Restrictions on the Table as First Non-Essential Use Ban Filed
Status: Developing. More than 27 million people in England already have hosepipe restrictions in place, and Whitehall officials are now drawing up a “reasonable worst case scenario” for going further if rainfall stays low — including Non-Essential Use Bans (NEUBs) covering car washes, window washing, and refilling private swimming pools, including at gyms. Southern Water has become the first company to formally submit a NEUB application, which the Environment Secretary will decide on. A government spokesperson said it is “clear the water sector is not working for bill payers” and pointed to plans for record infrastructure investment and nine new reservoirs. Worth watching if your usual water-dependent routines (car washing, topping up a paddling pool) aren’t already covered by a hosepipe ban in your area — a NEUB could extend further restrictions even where a hosepipe ban doesn’t apply.

UK — Wage Growth Slows as Iran War Squeezes Household Budgets
Status: Confirmed. Official ONS figures released today show UK wage growth, including bonuses, slowed to 4.1% in the three months to June, down from 4.3%, with unemployment holding at 4.9%. Economists point to the economic fallout from the continuing US-Israel-Iran conflict as a factor squeezing households further, with oil prices climbing back above $91 a barrel today after the US-Iran ceasefire window expired without a deal — a move that risks feeding through to pump prices and household bills in the weeks ahead. See our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker for the ongoing detail.

UK — Government Pushes Back on Water Company ‘Surge Pricing’ Plans
Status: Developing. Ofwat is consulting on plans that would let water companies charge more during droughts — dubbed “surge pricing” — with higher prices in summer and lower in winter, plus “rising block tariffs” that charge more once a household passes a basic usage threshold. Most schemes would require a smart water meter. There are no firm plans yet, but the Prime Minister has publicly pushed back, accusing water companies of treating customers like a “blank cheque” and saying unnecessary cost increases will be challenged. Water campaigner Feargal Sharkey was blunter, telling the Telegraph companies have failed for 40 years to help customers reduce demand and are now “penalising consumers for their own failures.” Nothing to act on yet, but worth watching if you’re on or considering a water meter — this is squarely a household-bill story, not just a policy debate.

🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity
Minor Geomagnetic Activity Only
Status: Monitoring. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a watch for a G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm on 19 August, with today expected to stay below G1 threshold. No impact on UK power, GPS or HF radio is expected at this level, and aurora is unlikely to be visible outside the far north of the UK on a clear night.

England — Bluetongue Outbreak: Farmers Call for More Support Amid Vaccine Shortages
Status: Ongoing. DEFRA has confirmed 447 bluetongue cases on UK farms since 1 July, with around 2,000 more suspected and still under investigation — more than 800 sheep and 150 cattle affected so far. The whole of England remains a bluetongue restricted zone. Farming groups are pressing DEFRA to speed up vaccine supply and help with fallen stock disposal costs, and the Addington Fund has opened emergency grants for affected farmers. Sustained livestock losses can eventually feed through to tighter meat and dairy supply and higher prices, though there’s no immediate shortage.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist
- ☑️ Check if you’re in a hosepipe ban area — Wessex Water customers across Bath, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire are banned from today
- ☑️ Switch to a watering can or stored rainwater for the garden rather than risk a fine of up to £1,000
- ☑️ If rain does arrive, don’t assume it’s refilled supplies — the ground’s too dry to soak it in quickly, so watch for surface water on roads and in low-lying areas
- ☑️ Book your flu jab now if you’re eligible — the NHS booking system opened today
- ☑️ If you or a family member uses a ResMed Astral 100 or 150 ventilator, check it against the MHRA alert
- ☑️ Be wary of unsolicited emails or calls referencing your job title or workplace — a large-scale credential theft campaign is actively targeting UK employees
- ☑️ Kent households in the South East Water outage area — check the incident page before travelling to a bottled-water station, and keep some water in reserve
- ☑️ Travelling through the New Forest? Follow the official A31 diversion, not a navigation app, and don’t attempt the Linwood back road

If you’re in a hosepipe ban area, now’s a good moment to set up a water butt with a pump rather than reach for the hose once the rain finally arrives — rainwater you’ve collected yourself is exempt from any ban and works just as well on the garden.
