Daily UK Prepper News — 10 October 2026

📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Yorkshire has been officially moved into drought, joining all of central, southern and eastern England, and the Environment Agency says around 120 per cent of normal rainfall is needed between now and April for everywhere to recover by spring. Flu is circulating at its highest level for this time of year in four years, and a drifted H1N1 strain has now been picked up in the UK, so anyone eligible for a free jab should book it now. Wholesale diesel looks to have peaked, which should start to ease the £2-a-litre pump price over the coming weeks.

🔝 Leading Story

Yorkshire — Drought Declared After the Fifth-Driest April to September on Record

Status: Confirmed. The Environment Agency has moved Yorkshire from “prolonged dry weather” into drought status, PA via AOL reports. The region had its fifth-driest April to September on record, and Yorkshire received just over half its normal rainfall in September alone, leaving river flows and groundwater very low in many areas. Reservoirs such as Baitings, near Ripponden in the West Yorkshire Pennines, are visibly down.

Yorkshire now joins the rest of central, southern and eastern England in drought, while the North East and North West remain in prolonged dry weather. The Environment Agency’s Vicki Townend warned that “even if we receive a few weeks of rain, we cannot quickly reverse the effects” of the dry spring and summer. Nationally, the agency says around 120 per cent of typical rainfall is needed between now and April for every area to be out of drought by spring, and Anglian Water has warned conditions could run into 2027.

Yorkshire Water says it is not planning any restrictions on customers for now, thanks to leakage work and moving water around its network, but it is asking everyone to use a little less, according to The Independent. Water Minister Emma Hardy said the recent rain “is not yet enough to replenish all the water we’ve used”. For households across Leeds, Sheffield, York, Bradford, Hull and the rest of the region, nothing changes at the tap today, but a dry winter could change that quickly, so it’s a sensible moment to put a few days’ drinking water by.

🏛️ Government Preparedness & Resilience Policy

Scotland — Holyrood to Write a New “War Book” With the UK Government

Status: Developing. Scotland is to develop a new “War Book” jointly with the UK government, The Herald reports, as military leaders warn of a growing threat of large-scale conflict by 2030. A war book sets out the plans for how the country would keep running and respond if attacked by a foreign power, a concept first developed early last century. The plans themselves stay secret, but the move is another sign that national resilience planning is being taken seriously at every level of government, and the household side of that is the same as ever: a few days of water, food, light and a battery or wind-up radio covers most emergencies, whatever causes them.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

East Anglia, Thames, Somerset & East Yorkshire — 12 Tidal Flood Alerts in Force

Status: Confirmed. The Environment Agency has 12 coastal and tidal flood alerts in place this morning, all raised on Friday afternoon and evening ahead of high tides. They cover the tidal Thames from the Thames Barrier to Putney Bridge and from Putney Bridge to Teddington Weir; the Suffolk coast from Lowestoft to Bawdsey, Southwold and the tidal Deben estuary; the Suffolk and Essex coast from Felixstowe to Clacton including the Orwell and Stour estuaries; the Essex coast from Clacton to St Peters Flat (the Colne and Blackwater), from St Peters Flat to Shoeburyness (the Crouch and Roach) and at Coalhouse Fort; the Hunstanton coast in Norfolk; Porlock Weir on the Somerset coast; and the North Sea coast at Withernsea, Easington and Kilnsea. These are alerts, not warnings, meaning flooding of low-lying riverside paths, roads and land is possible rather than homes being expected to flood. If you live, park or walk near these stretches around high tide, check the live map before you go and keep cars off riverside roads.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Deeside & Chester — Broken Overhead Line Equipment Leaves 22 Postcodes Without Power Into the Night

Status: Confirmed. A fault on SP Energy Networks’ overhead line network cut power to 22 postcodes across Deeside and the edge of Chester on Friday evening, mostly in the CH5 2 and CH1 6 areas, The Leader reports. The network operator first hoped to restore supplies by 8.14pm, then pushed that back to 10.30pm once engineers found broken equipment needing repair. It’s a good example of how an estimated restoration time can slip by hours once crews actually reach a fault, so a torch and a charged power bank by the door are worth more than the first ETA.

Newport — High-Voltage Cable Fault Cuts Power to 1,565 Properties in Lliswerry

Status: Confirmed. A high-voltage underground cable fault cut power to 1,565 properties in the Lliswerry area of Newport at about 10.45am on Friday, including a Tesco Extra, the South Wales Argus reports. National Grid Electricity Distribution restored supplies to all affected properties within a few minutes, and permanent repairs are now under way.

💧 Water & Utilities

Sussex — Tougher Hosepipe Ban Now in Force, With Vulnerable Customers No Longer Exempt

Status: Confirmed. As previously covered (8 October), South East Water’s expanded hosepipe ban took effect on Friday for its Sussex customers, including Burgess Hill, Crowborough, Battle and Eastbourne, BBC News confirms. The only exemptions left are for health and safety and animal welfare, so people on the Priority Services Register and businesses such as window cleaners, gardeners and jet washers serving homes are now covered by the ban. South East Water customers in Kent, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire are still under a ban but keep their exemptions for now, and an application to restrict some business water use is still pending. See our Special Report “Why Is There a Hosepipe Ban?” first published on 8 August 2026.

Oldham — Flooding Hits Five Homes and Shuts Hollins Road

Status: Developing. Five fire engines were sent to Hollins Road in Oldham just before midday on Friday after water flooded the ground floors of five properties near the junction with Howgill Crescent, the Manchester Evening News reports. United Utilities, the fire service and Oldham Council were all at the scene into the evening, the busy main road remained closed, and the cause had not yet been confirmed. Water getting in at ground-floor level is exactly the moment to know where your stopcock and electricity consumer unit are, before you need them.

Waterlooville, Hampshire — Homes in PO7 5 Warned of No Water or Low Pressure

Status: Developing. Portsmouth Water works in nearby Purbrook left many homes in the PO7 5 area of Waterlooville without water or with a weak supply on Friday, The News reports, with Kennedy Close, Taylor Close, Bursledon Place and Calgary Close among the streets affected. The company said the problem was being investigated and it hoped to restore normal service soon. A couple of filled and dated water bottles in a cupboard turns this kind of outage from a problem into a minor nuisance.

🛡️ National Security

Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.

UK Security News

Cambridgeshire — Two Men Held Inside RAF Molesworth Released on Bail

Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (9 October), two Latvian men aged 36 and 32 were arrested inside the perimeter of RAF Molesworth, which is used by the US military and NATO for intelligence work. They have now been released on bail with strict conditions, BBC News reports. Counter Terrorism Policing London is still investigating, and its head, Commander Helen Flanagan, said there is nothing so far to suggest a link to the events at RAF Fairford last week.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

UK — Flu at a Four-Year High for the Time of Year, and a Drifted H1N1 Strain Has Reached the UK

Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (9 October), flu admissions are rising unusually early. New UK Health Security Agency data shows flu swab positivity rose from 5.0 to 6.5 per cent in the week to 4 October, with activity through September above the same period in each of the last four winters, and hospital admissions at 1.97 per 100,000, driven mainly by young adults, the York Press reports.

The new detail is that a World Health Organization report has found one of the A(H1N1) flu viruses, recently detected at low levels in the UK, has “drifted” away from the version used in this season’s vaccine, according to the Birmingham Mail. UKHSA says it is too early to tell whether that strain will spread widely, that H3N2 and H1N1 are currently circulating in roughly equal measure, and that the vaccine covers all three main flu types and usually still prevents severe illness even against drifted strains, as it did last winter. If you are eligible, book through the NHS App, your GP or a local pharmacy now rather than waiting for the peak.

🏭 Industrial Hazards

Perth — Explosion and Fire at North Muirton Industrial Estate

Status: Confirmed. Four fire engines and a high-reach vehicle were sent to a building near Arran Road on the North Muirton Industrial Estate in Perth just after 1pm on Thursday, following reports of an explosion, The Scotsman reports. Police closed the road while the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service put out the fire, and Arran Road has since reopened. No injuries were reported and police say the fire is not being treated as suspicious.

UK-Wide — Stop Using Pimple-Popping Squishy Toys That Come With Needles or Syringes

Status: Confirmed. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has told the public to stop using pimple-popping squishy toys that come with sharp needles or syringes straight away, and has directed online retailers to remove all listings, WalesOnline reports. The toys are filled by injecting air or liquid with an unsterile medical needle to make a “blister” to pop, and at least one child has already needed A&E treatment. Although many are sold as “adult stress toys”, OPSS says they fall under UK toy safety rules and pose an injury risk to all ages. If you have one at home, take it off children and dispose of the needle safely, ideally in a sharps container from a pharmacy.

Medical

Hospitals & Clinics — Nova StatStrip Ketone Test Strips Recalled Over Quality-Control Failures

Status: Confirmed. Nova Biomedical has recalled specified lots of StatStrip ketone test strips after they were linked to quality-control failures, and warns of a possible interruption to supply, according to the MHRA (alert DSI/2026/013). StatStrip is a point-of-care meter used mainly in hospitals and clinics for blood ketone testing, so the alert is aimed at healthcare settings. If you manage diabetes at home and use a different home ketone meter, this alert does not apply to you, but if your care team uses StatStrip, ask how your testing will be covered.

💷 Cost of Living

UK-Wide — Wholesale Diesel Looks to Have Peaked as Trump Strikes a Russian Diesel Deal

Status: Developing. The RAC says wholesale diesel prices have fallen significantly since the G7 agreed to release some of its strategic diesel reserves, and are now well below the mid-September high that pushed the UK average pump price over £2 a litre, the Birmingham Mail reports. The RAC’s Simon Williams said the lower price needs to hold for at least a week before drivers see a meaningful difference at the pumps, but called it “a strong indication that diesel prices are moving in the right direction.”

Separately, US President Donald Trump says Russia has agreed to release 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately, 500,000 tonnes in November and another million after that, BBC News reports. Diesel prices have risen sharply worldwide since the Iran war began in February, and more fuel on the global market tends to pull wholesale prices down for everyone. The UK government said its sanctions on Russia stay in place, according to the Manchester Evening News. England, Wales & Scotland — Warm Home Discount Reopens This Month, Cold Weather Payments From November

Status: Confirmed. The Warm Home Discount scheme reopens this month, giving eligible households on certain benefits money off their electricity bill this winter, with eligibility depending on your benefits, supplier and circumstances on a key qualifying date, the Northern Echo reports. Cold Weather Payments of £25 also open from November, paid automatically for every seven consecutive days when the average temperature in your area is recorded or forecast at 0°C or below, to people getting Pension Credit, Universal Credit, Employment and Support Allowance or Support for Mortgage Interest, according to the Birmingham Mail. Neither needs an application in most cases, so the main job is making sure your benefit and supplier details are up to date.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

Great Britain — Bluetongue Reaches 3,164 Cases With 83 More Confirmed in England in a Day

Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (9 October), bluetongue had passed 3,000 cases. The latest APHA figures put the 2026 to 2027 season at 3,164 confirmed premises: 2,644 in England, 473 in Wales, 47 in Scotland and none in Northern Ireland. England confirmed 83 new cases on 8 October, across Cheshire, Cornwall, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Devon, Gloucestershire, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Leicestershire, North Yorkshire and Somerset, with Devon alone now at 1,216. A further 589 suspected cases are under investigation. Keepers should watch for signs such as fever, mouth sores and lameness in sheep and cattle and report suspicions straight away.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ Fill and date a few bottles of tap water, about 3 litres per person per day for at least three days
  • ☑️ Check the Environment Agency flood map before parking or walking near tidal rivers and the East Anglian coast around high tide
  • ☑️ Book your flu jab now if you’re eligible, through the NHS App, your GP or a pharmacy
  • ☑️ Put a torch and a charged power bank somewhere you can find them in the dark
  • ☑️ Check your benefit and energy supplier details are current so Warm Home Discount and Cold Weather Payments arrive automatically
  • ☑️ Take any needle squishy toys away from children and dispose of the needles safely

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

Drought rarely turns the taps off overnight, but burst mains and local works do, as Waterlooville found on Friday. The cheapest insurance is free: next time you finish a large squash or milk bottle, rinse it, fill it from the tap, write the date on it and put it in a dark cupboard. Do that a few times over the next week and you’ll have a couple of days’ drinking water without spending a penny, and you can rotate it every six months by using it on the plants.
