One dead and hundreds ill in a new UKHSA national salmonella outbreak linked to imported eggs, while burst mains leave hundreds of homes without water in Enfield and Batley on top of an already-stretched drought. A second major fire in three months has broken out at a South London waste site, shutting rail lines and prompting an avoid-the-area warning. Store extra drinking water where you can, and if you’re near Deptford, keep windows closed.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook
UK — No Warnings in Force, But Drought-Breaking Rain Still on the Way
Status: Monitoring. The Met Office has no yellow, amber or red weather warnings in force anywhere in the UK today, and none are forecast over the coming week. As previously covered (18 August), a cold front is still expected to bring the first meaningful rain in weeks to parts of England — but forecasters continue to warn it will fall on baked, rock-hard ground that can’t absorb it quickly, so watch for localised surface water rather than a drought fix. 🧑⚕️ Health & NHS Updates
England, Scotland & Wales — National Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Imported Eggs
Status: Confirmed. UKHSA has declared a national outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis, with 207 confirmed cases recorded between August 2025 and this month — the majority in the past few weeks. One person has died and 38% of cases have needed hospital treatment, including two people who developed life-threatening bloodstream infections. Most cases are in England (199 of 207, including 47 in London and 38 in Yorkshire and the Humber), with a handful in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Investigators believe the outbreak is linked to food made with imported eggs, with no identified link to UK-produced eggs or poultry at this stage. If you’re using egg-based dishes that aren’t fully cooked — mayonnaise, mousse, homemade ice cream — check where the eggs came from, and make sure eggs and egg dishes for children, the elderly or anyone vulnerable are thoroughly cooked. UK — MHRA Recall: Rectal Catheters for Infants (Day 2)
Status: Confirmed. The MHRA has issued a National Patient Safety Alert covering all rectal catheters marketed as gas and colic relievers, warning they must not be used in infants — including for colic, gas-related discomfort or constipation. Anyone with one of these devices at home should stop using it immediately and dispose of any unused stock. Source: MHRA
🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts
UK & Germany — Pokémon Center Customers Exposed in Ceva Logistics Breach
Status: Confirmed. Pokémon Center is notifying UK and German customers that their personal details were exposed after a cyberattack on its third-party logistics provider, Ceva Logistics, between 29 July and 1 August. Names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and order contents may have been accessed, though payment card details were not held by Ceva and were not exposed. Some pending orders have been cancelled as a result. If you’ve ordered from Pokémon Center recently, be alert to phishing emails or calls referencing your order details, and don’t click links in unexpected “order problem” messages. Source: SC Media UK
🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
New Forest, Hampshire — A31 Closure Enters 11th Day, Reopening Expected Thursday
Status: Ongoing. The A31 remains closed in both directions through the New Forest, 11 days after the wildfire that started on 9 August. National Highways expects it to stay shut until at least Thursday 20 August while crews replace boundary fencing, repair vehicle safety barriers and resurface fire-damaged sections. Fire crews are now scaling back on site, dampening hotspots and handing the road back to National Highways for repairs. If you regularly use this route, keep checking National Highways diversion information before you travel rather than assuming it’s reopened. Source: New Forest District Council

💧 Water & Utilities
Kent — South East Water Restricts Use to “Essential Purposes” as Outage Enters Fifth Day
Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (18 August), around 8,000 South East Water customers in Kent have now gone days without normal supply after taps ran dry earlier this week. The company has escalated its advice, telling customers to use water only for essential purposes while engineers continue emergency repair work. If you’re in an affected area, keep bottled water and any stored supplies for drinking and cooking, not for anything that can wait. Source: The Guardian
Enfield, London — 750 Homes Still Without Water as Thames Water Battles “Complex” Leak
Status: Ongoing. Around 750 properties around Bramley Road, between Oakwood and Cockfosters (postcodes EN1, EN2, N14 and N21), remain affected by a burst water main first reported on Sunday. Thames Water says the repair is “complex” and has brought in specialist teams and tankers to pump extra water into the local network while work continues. Free bottled water is available for affected residents at Forty Hall Estate, and anyone needing extra support should register on Thames Water’s Priority Services Register. Source: Enfield Dispatch
Batley, West Yorkshire — Burst Main Cuts Supply as Emergency Repairs Take Place
Status: Developing. A burst water main around Upper Batley Lane has left residents with no water or low pressure. Yorkshire Water is on site and aiming to restore supply within four to six hours, though water may run cloudy or discoloured for a while afterwards — running a tap for a few minutes should clear it. Source: Dewsbury Reporter
Three separate burst-main incidents inside a week, on top of an already live hosepipe ban across Bath, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire, is a useful reminder that mains water isn’t infallible — even without a single drop of rain falling. A stored supply at home means an interrupted mains connection is an inconvenience, not an emergency.

UK — Inflation Rises to 2.9% as Iran War Pushes Up Energy Bills
Status: Confirmed. Official figures show UK inflation rose to 2.9% in July, up from a 15-month low of 2.6% in June — the first rise since March. The Office for National Statistics said the jump was driven mainly by rising gas and electricity prices, linked to the continuing impact of the Iran war on energy markets (see our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker for the wider picture). This adds fresh pressure to household budgets already stretched by the cost of living, and comes as economists warn further energy-driven price rises are possible if the conflict continues. 🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity
No significant geomagnetic activity to report today. NOAA’s current extended alert covers only a minor Kp-index of 4, below the threshold for a G1 storm — no aurora, HF radio or GPS impact expected for the UK. Source: NOAA SWPC

England & Wales — Sheep Farmers Urged Not to Delay Shearing Amid Bluetongue Spread
Status: Monitoring. With bluetongue virus continuing to spread and temperatures still high in parts of the country, industry bodies are urging sheep farmers not to put off shearing — the practice plays a role in animal welfare and in limiting conditions that help the disease-carrying midges thrive. This is background guidance for farming households rather than a change in restrictions; check the APHA bluetongue map if you keep livestock in an affected area. Source: Farmers Guide
🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports
No significant UK port or import disruption reported at this time.
🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards
Deptford, London — Second Major Fire at South London Recycling Centre in Three Months
Status: Ongoing. A large fire broke out at a waste facility in Landmann Way, Deptford, on Tuesday evening — the second major blaze at the same site in under three months. About 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines are dealing with roughly 50 tonnes of burning household waste. The London Fire Brigade has asked people nearby to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed because of heavy smoke, and rail lines running past the site remain shut this morning while crews continue to tackle the blaze. The cause has not yet been established. If you’re in south-east London near Deptford or New Cross, keep windows closed and check National Rail before travelling on affected lines. Emergency Water Storage
How much to store, how to store it in small spaces, and the reality of UK water rotation.
UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day
With three separate water outages hitting different parts of the country this week, now’s a good moment to check your stored water is actually enough — the general rule is at least three litres per person per day for drinking and basic cooking, more if you can manage it. A few large containers kept topped up and rotated occasionally costs nothing and turns a burst main from a crisis into a non-event.
