📰 Quick News Brief
A yellow wind warning is in force for Friday across south-west England, south and west Wales and the south coast as far as West Sussex, with gusts of up to 70mph and a small risk of power cuts, and the system could become Storm Austen, the first named storm of the autumn. Offshore workers on platforms linked to the Forties Pipeline, which carries around 30% of the UK’s oil production, are due to strike for 24 hours from 6am on Wednesday, and the union says it could disrupt fuel supplies. Use the next three days to tie down anything loose in the garden and put torches, a charged power bank and a radio where you can find them in the dark.

South-West England, South Wales and the South Coast — Yellow Wind Warning for Friday as Storm Austen Looms
Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (19 October), forecasters were watching a deep area of low pressure heading for the UK. The Met Office has now issued a yellow wind warning from midnight to midday on Friday 23 October, covering south-west England, south and west Wales and the south coast towards West Sussex. Gusts of 50 to 60mph are expected widely, with 70mph or more possible on exposed coasts and hills, plus spells of heavy rain. The Met Office says there is a slight chance of tiles blown off roofs, power cuts that could also knock out mobile phone coverage, road and bridge closures, and large waves throwing beach material onto seafronts and coastal roads. In Wales the warning covers Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Neath Port Talbot, Newport, Pembrokeshire, Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea, Torfaen and the Vale of Glamorgan, WalesOnline reports. BBC Weather says this will be the wettest and windiest week of the autumn so far, with heavy rain spreading across England and east Wales today and more rain on Wednesday, including over drought-hit areas. If the Met Office, Met Éireann or the Dutch KNMI judge the impacts medium or high, the storm will be named Austen. Before Thursday night, bring in or tie down bins, garden furniture and trampolines, charge your power banks, and check your torches and battery radio work. Lydiard Millicent and Marlborough, Wiltshire — Repeated Power Cuts Leave CPAP User Without Breathing Support
Status: Ongoing. Lydiard Millicent, near Swindon, has had intermittent power cuts for two weeks, with the longest lasting about 12 hours, BBC News reports. More than 100 homes have been affected and the village school had to close for a day. Resident Sharon Dudley, who has sleep apnoea and uses a CPAP machine at night, says her life is put at risk every time the power drops while she is asleep. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has given her a back-up battery supply, installed a new generator and expects faulty generator repairs to be finished by the end of the week. Separately, a fault on overhead lines between Swindon and Marlborough cut power to homes from about 7.30am on Monday, the Swindon Advertiser reports. If anyone in your home relies on powered medical equipment, join your network operator’s free Priority Services Register by calling 105, and ask your supplier or clinic about a back-up battery before Friday’s winds arrive.
💧 Water & Utilities
Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, East Sussex and West Sussex — Public Water Supplies Put First in Severe Drought Areas
Status: Developing. The Environment Agency has been directed to prioritise public water supplies in the severe drought areas, Water Magazine reports. The direction allows temporary changes to environmental releases and abstraction limits across four reservoir areas, while keeping statutory environmental safeguards in place. Water Minister Emma Hardy has told the agency to put public supplies first where environmental rules and supplies can’t both be met, which lets water companies hold more water back in depleted reservoirs, Smart Water Magazine reports. Local Resilience Forums are being stood up so support can be put in place quickly if needed, and water companies must now check reservoir and river levels every day. On the ground, Tottiford Reservoir in Devon is down to 18% and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service has stopped using mains water for training drills, the Teignmouth Post reports. In Cornwall, Stithians Reservoir is around 20% full and Falmouth and Truro residents are being urged to use water carefully, the Falmouth Packet reports. This week’s rain will help, but one wet week won’t refill reservoirs this low. Keep a few days of bottled water in, about 2 litres per person per day.

Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire — E. coli Traces Confirmed, Other Samples Clear
Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (19 October), residents of Martin Close, Bullfinch Court, Magpie Lane and Chaffinch Way were told to boil their water. Portsmouth Water has now confirmed the hydrant sample contained traces of E. coli and coliforms, the Daily Echo reports. Further samples from nearby hydrants, customers’ homes, treatment works and service reservoirs have all tested clear, and the company believes the first result may have come from external contamination of the sample. Keep boiling your water until Portsmouth Water tells you the notice is lifted.
Malvern, Worcestershire — Burst Pipe Floods Road and Cuts Supply
Status: Confirmed. A burst water pipe flooded Albert Road South in Malvern on Monday, and Severn Trent says it is working to repair it and restore supplies as soon as possible, the Malvern Gazette reports. A filled kettle and a few bottles in the cupboard cover the hours it takes to fix a burst like this.
Cambridgeshire — Council Warns Winter Freeze-Thaw Will Punish Pipes After Record Summer of Leaks
Status: Confirmed. Cambridgeshire County Council will write to the government and regulators asking for an urgent, planned upgrade of the county’s ageing water pipes after a summer of record leaks, Cambridgeshire Live reports. Councillor Ros Hathorn said the heatwaves were “absolutely brutal” to the pipes, and warned that “the freeze-thaw cycle always punishes the pipes” in winter. Know where your stopcock is and check it turns before the first frost, so you can shut off a burst in your own home quickly.

Nantgarw and Taff’s Well — Green Dye in the River Taff Is a Tracer, Not New Pollution
Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (19 October), kerosene leaked into the River Taff from the GE Aerospace site at Nantgarw. Natural Resources Wales says any green colour in the river is a tracing dye its officers are using to follow water flows and find the route the fuel is taking through underground drains, WalesOnline reports. NRW says the amount of fuel reaching the river has been significantly reduced, and fuel is still being recovered from the drainage system. Keep children and dogs out of the water until NRW gives the all-clear.

Northern Ireland and Scotland — Hoax Bomb-Threat Emails Close Schools
Status: Confirmed. Up to 300 schools in Northern Ireland received an email on Monday morning claiming an explosive device had been placed inside, and some closed and asked parents to collect children immediately, BBC News reports. The PSNI says the email came from outside the UK, checks found nothing untoward, and it is being treated as a hoax with the risk to the public considered low. Police Scotland is investigating similar emails sent to Scottish schools and is also treating them as a hoax, and the PSNI says some schools elsewhere in the UK received the same message. Head teachers told the BBC the guidance they received was conflicting. Make sure your child’s school has your current mobile number and a back-up contact, and agree with your children who collects them if you can’t get there.
Sheerness, Kent — Masts Removed From the SS Richard Montgomery Bomb Ship
Status: Confirmed. Engineers have removed all three masts from the SS Richard Montgomery, the wartime cargo ship that sank in the Thames Estuary in 1944 with around 1,400 tonnes of munitions on board, The Guardian reports. Maritime minister Keir Mather told the Commons the masts had put significant load on the wreck and could have collapsed onto its cargo, and their removal reduces that risk. The work finished ahead of schedule at an estimated £9.5m, but the bombs themselves remain in the wreck, which stays under constant guard. See our Special Report “SS Richard Montgomery” first published on 11 September 2026.

Poland — NATO Jets Scrambled and Two Airports Closed After Russian Drone Strikes
Status: Confirmed. NATO aircraft were scrambled over Poland on Monday and airports at Lublin and Rzeszów suspended flights after Russia launched drone strikes on western Ukraine, the Birmingham Mail reports. Polish forces put ground-based air defences and radar on standby and called the measures preventive. If you’re flying to eastern Poland over half term, check with your airline on the day you travel.

Leeds Bradford Airport — Half-Term Strike Suspended for Talks
Status: Confirmed. Strikes by more than 130 workers at Leeds Bradford Airport, including air traffic controllers, passport control and passenger assistance staff, planned from Friday 23 October to 2 November, have been suspended while Acas brokers new talks, the York Press reports. Unite says its members still have a mandate and it will announce new strike dates if talks fail. Half-term flights should run as normal, but keep an eye on your airline’s updates, and remember Friday’s wind warning could cause separate delays.
Canary Islands — Emergency Alert Test on Tourists’ Phones on Thursday
Status: Confirmed. Holidaymakers in Tenerife may get an emergency alert on their mobile phones between 9am and 2pm on Thursday 22 October during a major volcanic emergency drill, the Manchester Evening News reports. The ES-Alert test could also reach Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. It’s only a test, so there’s no need to act on it, but it’s worth telling the family before you go so nobody panics.
🧑⚕️ Health & NHS Updates
Broomfield Hospital, Essex — NHS Trust Prosecuted Over Two Children’s Sepsis Deaths
Status: Confirmed. Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is being prosecuted by the Care Quality Commission over the deaths of two young girls with sepsis, BBC News reports. Three-year-old Zadie Ajetunmobi died within hours of being taken to Broomfield Hospital with a temperature of 40°C in November 2022, and was not given potentially life-saving intravenous antibiotics for more than seven hours. Two-year-old Selina Samarina was sent home by a doctor in April 2024 and died two days later. The trust is due before Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court in December. If a child or adult is getting worse rather than better, has mottled or bluish skin, is breathing very fast or is unusually drowsy, ask the doctor directly: “Could this be sepsis?”
London — Guy’s and St Thomas’ Facilities Staff on Strike Until Wednesday
Status: Ongoing. Nearly 300 cleaners, porters, store workers and food service assistants at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust are striking from Monday 19 to Wednesday 21 October over pay and working conditions, the Evening Standard reports. The trust says negotiations are continuing. If you have an appointment at Guy’s or St Thomas’ this week, go unless the hospital contacts you to say otherwise.

Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire — Charging Battery Blamed for House Fire
Status: Confirmed. A house fire in Ashby-de-la-Zouch on Saturday afternoon is believed to have been started by a lithium-ion battery left charging in the kitchen, Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service says, AOL reports. Nobody was hurt, but the kitchen was badly damaged. The service says crews are attending more lithium-ion battery fires both locally and nationally. With power banks and rechargeable lanterns coming out for storm season, use the correct charger, charge on a hard surface while you’re awake and at home, never charge where a fire could block your way out, and stop using any battery that swells, gets hot, smells or hisses.

North Sea — Offshore Strike From Wednesday Could Disrupt UK Fuel Supplies, Union Warns
Status: Developing. More than 160 offshore workers at Apache are due to strike for 24 hours from 6am on Wednesday 21 October, with a second strike planned for 4 November, The Guardian reports. The walkout covers five Apache platforms linked to the Forties Pipeline System, which handles about 30% of UK oil production, and Unite says a halt in production could cause a sharp drop in pressure across the pipeline and “severely disrupt” UK fuel supplies. Seven platforms are expected to be affected, including the Forties and Beryl developments, the Herald reports. A separate 48-hour strike by Wood Group workers on Harbour Energy platforms was already planned from Tuesday. Pay talks through Acas continue on Wednesday. Don’t panic-buy, but if your tank is low, fill up as normal this week rather than waiting. See our Special Report “Is There a Diesel Shortage? UK-Wide — Bluetongue Cases Pass 3,400 This Season
Status: Ongoing. There have now been 3,424 confirmed cases of bluetongue serotype 3 (or unspecified serotype) in the UK in the 2026 to 2027 season, according to the latest update from APHA, updated on 19 October. That’s 2,883 premises in England, 490 in Wales and 51 in Scotland. Keepers of sheep, cattle and goats should watch for signs of the disease and report any suspicion to APHA.
England — Farmers Urged to Flood-Proof Buildings as 1.12 Million Hectares Are at Risk
Status: Confirmed. The Environment Agency says around 1.12 million hectares of agricultural land in England is at risk of flooding, and the new Rural Flood Resilience Partnership has published guidance on protecting farm buildings, Farmers Guide reports. The guidance covers preparing for floods, reducing damage and recovering faster. Smallholders should move feed, fuel and machinery off low ground and plan where livestock would go before the winter rain arrives.

UK-Wide — Unemployment Falls to 4.7% but Job Vacancies Hit a Five-Year Low
Status: Confirmed. The unemployment rate fell to 4.7% in the three months to August, down from 4.9%, while job vacancies dropped by 21,000 to 691,000, their lowest level in more than five years, BBC News reports, citing the ONS. Small firms say higher labour and energy costs are why they are hiring less. Regular pay rose 3.7%, which is 0.8% after inflation. With fewer vacancies about, a few months of essential costs in savings is the best cushion if your own job changes.
Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist
- ☑️ Check the Met Office warnings for your area on Wednesday and Thursday, as Friday’s warning could be upgraded
- ☑️ Tie down or bring in bins, garden furniture and trampolines before Thursday night
- ☑️ Charge power banks and test torches and a battery radio, and keep them where you can find them in the dark
- ☑️ If anyone at home uses powered medical equipment, call 105 to join the Priority Services Register
