England’s fifth heatwave of the summer is set to peak at 34°C on Thursday, with the National Drought Group meeting today to decide whether more of England joins Wales and half the country already under water restrictions. Wildfires are still active in Hampshire’s New Forest — where the A31 remains closed in both directions — and in Norfolk, where two homes were damaged in Kenninghall over the weekend. Rail passengers heading to Heathrow and Gatwick face severe disruption today after a water leak and a lineside fire hit both routes.

Royal Meteorological Society chief executive Liz Bentley told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the UK had experienced an “exceptional, unprecedented summer” that was becoming “the new norm”.

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts
UK-wide — Nearly a Third of Manufacturers Hit by Cyberattack in Past Year
Status: Confirmed. A survey by manufacturing lobby group MakeUK has found that 30% of British manufacturers experienced a cyber-incident affecting their business or supply chain in the past 12 months, according to The Guardian. The findings come almost a year after an attack on JLR, Britain’s largest automotive employer, halted production for weeks. Only half of manufacturers surveyed said they had a response plan in place should they be hit.
🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
London — Heathrow Express and Elizabeth Line Severely Disrupted
Status: Confirmed. A water leak has forced the closure of a tunnel between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Terminals 4 and 5, BBC London reports. There are no Elizabeth line services to Heathrow for the rest of Monday, and Heathrow Express services from Paddington are running at 50% capacity — just two trains an hour. Network Rail says tickets are being accepted on the Piccadilly line and on replacement bus routes 105, 278, 350 and 482, with major disruption expected until the end of the day.
South London — Gatwick Rail Line Disrupted by Lineside Fire Near Purley
Status: Confirmed. Rail services to Gatwick Airport are also disrupted today due to a fire on the line near Purley in south London, Network Rail has confirmed. Passengers travelling to either London airport today are advised to check National Rail before setting off.

England and Wales — More Areas Set to Be Declared in Drought Today
Status: Developing. The National Drought Group — made up of regulators, government officials, water companies and agricultural bodies — is meeting this afternoon to assess whether more of England should be formally declared in drought, BBC News reports. East Anglia, Hertfordshire, London, the Thames Valley, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Devon, Cornwall, the West Midlands and Wessex (Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire and south Gloucestershire) are already officially in drought, alongside the whole of Wales. North West England — currently classed under the less severe “prolonged dry weather” status — is expected to be among the areas added today.
England and Wales recorded their driest July since records began in 1836 last month, with less than 10mm of rain across England for seven consecutive weeks. The Environment Agency says almost all reservoirs across England are below normal levels, with five classed as “exceptionally low”, and has warned of navigation issues on the Thames, Lark and Ouse. The National Farmers’ Union has warned that continued dry weather could affect food supply, with wheat and oat yields described as “very, very poor” this year. 23 million people are currently subject to hosepipe bans.
Braintree, Essex — Hosepipe Ban in Force While Water Company Leak Remains Unfixed
Status: Ongoing. A resident of Braintree has criticised Anglian Water for enforcing a hosepipe ban while a water leak she reported in June remains unrepaired, BBC Essex reports. Anglian Water said the current dry weather “can cause ground movement that results in an increase of burst water mains or leaks” and that teams were prioritising repairs with the greatest impact on customers’ supplies.

UK-wide — Government Brings Forward Ban on ‘Subscription Traps’ and Fake Discounts
Status: Confirmed. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has brought forward a package of consumer protection measures, including a ban on “subscription traps” and fake “was” pricing on discounts, BBC News reports. Businesses will be required to give clearer up-front information, regular reminders and an easier exit from contracts that auto-renew at a higher price. The government says the changes, now due to come into force by January 2027, will save consumers up to £170 per person, with 10 million unwanted, active subscriptions currently held across the UK.
England, Scotland and Wales — Warm Home Discount: Check You’re Named on Your Energy Bill by 23 August
Status: Confirmed. Households on means-tested benefits are being urged to check they are named on their electricity bill ahead of a 23 August deadline, after which suppliers use customer records to determine eligibility for the £150 Warm Home Discount, BBC News reports. Around six million households on Universal Credit, Pension Credit, income-related ESA or housing benefit qualify, but the discount is only automatic if the account is registered in the claimant’s name — a common gap for anyone who has recently moved house or uses a prepayment meter. 345,000 low-income Scottish households will now receive the rebate automatically for the first time this winter.
🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity
Minor G1 Geomagnetic Storm Possible Wednesday
Status: Monitoring. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts conditions to remain below G1 today and tomorrow, with a G1 (minor) geomagnetic storm possible on Wednesday 12 August. No impact on UK power infrastructure, GPS or HF radio is expected at this level.

No new notifiable disease outbreaks or restriction zone changes have been reported by APHA or DEFRA in the last 48 hours.

🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards
Kenninghall, Norfolk — Field Fire Spreads to Homes, Two Roofs Destroyed
Status: Confirmed. A fire that broke out in a field adjacent to School Close in Kenninghall, near Diss, spread to nearby homes on Sunday afternoon, BBC Norfolk reports. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service sent eight crews and had the blaze out by 16:15, with aerial pictures showing the roofs of two homes destroyed. No injuries were reported, and the village hall was opened for anyone affected. Norfolk crews were called to more than 20 separate fires in the open on Sunday alone as the exceptionally dry weather continued.
New Forest, Hampshire — A31 Shut Both Directions as Vehicle Fire Spreads to Heathland
Status: Ongoing. Crews are still tackling a fire that began as a vehicle blaze on the A31 near Ringwood on Sunday evening before spreading into surrounding heathland, BBC South reports. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service sent 26 fire engines along with crews from Dorset and Wiltshire after receiving more than 160 emergency calls. The A31 remains closed in both directions between Picket Post and junction 2 of the M27, with motorists advised to find alternative routes.
Holme Fen, Cambridgeshire — 80+ Firefighters Battle Second Peatland Blaze in Two Weeks
Status: Ongoing. More than 80 firefighters have spent days tackling a blaze at Holme Fen Nature Reserve near Peterborough, the second fire at the site in a fortnight, BBC Cambridgeshire reports. Because the reserve is peatland, the fire is burning at least a metre below the surface, which crews say can keep it going for days rather than hours. Several local roads remain closed and the original fire, which broke out on 27 July, is being investigated as suspected arson.
📻 Emergency Alerts & Communications Infrastructure
No changes to the national Emergency Alert system, and no major mobile network or broadband outages, have been reported today.
