Daily UK Prepper News — 12 August 2026

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

The Prime Minister is chairing an emergency Cobra meeting today as the Met Office issues a rare amber extreme heat warning for Thursday, when parts of England could hit 38°C, while the New Forest wildfire enters its fourth day and keeps the A31 shut. Nearly three-quarters of England and all of Wales are now in drought, nine water companies have hosepipe bans in force, and thousands in east London queued for bottled water today after a burst main cut supply. Check today’s heat-health guidance, plan around Thursday’s peak heat, and keep a few days’ water in store — mains supply isn’t guaranteed even during a drought.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

England — Emergency Cobra Meeting Called as Amber Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Thursday

Status: Confirmed. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is chairing an emergency Cobra meeting this afternoon on the government’s response to extreme heat, wildfires and drought, with ministers from Defra, the Home Office and the Department of Health and Social Care attending alongside Environment Agency officials. It’s the second heatwave Cobra meeting this year. The Met Office has issued a rare amber “extreme heat” warning for Thursday 13 August, 9am to midnight, covering London and the South East, the East Midlands, the East of England, the West Midlands and South Yorkshire, with temperatures likely to reach 37-38°C. Today itself is forecast to hit 33°C. It’s the UK’s fifth heatwave of the year, and the country has now recorded 35 days at or above 30°C in 2026 — a new record, beating the 34 days set in 1995. The Guardian reports the National Fire Chiefs Council says firefighters have responded to more than 950 wildfires across England and Wales this year, including 185 in the first ten days of August alone, and the government has announced £97m in new funding to upgrade firefighting equipment. Households in the amber warning area should plan to avoid outdoor activity between 11am and 3pm on Thursday and check on vulnerable neighbours and relatives before then.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

England — Amber Heat-Health Alert Now Covers Every Region

Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (11 August), the UK Health Security Agency has an amber heat-health alert active across all nine regions of England, with the North East upgraded to amber alongside the rest of the country. The alert runs until 9pm Friday 14 August. UKHSA’s advice: drink plenty of water, avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day, keep indoor spaces cool by closing curtains on sun-facing windows during the day, never leave anyone in a closed vehicle, and check that medication is being stored at the temperature its packaging requires — several common medicines lose effectiveness if they overheat.

UK-wide — MHRA Field Safety Notices, 3-7 August

Status: Confirmed — Day 2 of 2, final day of coverage. The MHRA published its weekly digest of 12 field safety notices for the period 3-7 August. Most affect hospital equipment only (ventilators, patient monitors, cardiac devices), but a handful touch kit some households use directly: defibrillation electrodes, blood glucose monitoring strips, and orthopaedic bandages are among the items flagged. If you or a family member use any of these at home, check the MHRA page above for the specific manufacturer and batch details — this is the last day this notice will be reported.

🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts

UK-wide — Ransomware Gangs Actively Exploiting SharePoint Flaw

Status: Confirmed. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has confirmed that ransomware groups are actively exploiting a high-severity remote code execution vulnerability in Microsoft SharePoint, flagged as under attack since early July. BleepingComputer reports the flaw affects on-premises SharePoint servers, which many UK small businesses and local organisations still run. If your household runs a business, church group, club or charity with its own SharePoint server, this is worth flagging to whoever manages your IT — patching is the only fix. No new UK-specific breach was confirmed via a working source today; monitoring continues.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

Hampshire — A31 Shut for at Least Two More Days

Status: Ongoing. The A31 through the New Forest remains closed in both directions as Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service continues to tackle the wildfire that has been burning since Monday. National Highways says the closure will remain in place for at least another two days — the fire has damaged the road surface, safety barriers and boundary fencing badly enough that repairs are needed before it can reopen, and there’s no confirmed reopening date yet. If you’re travelling through Hampshire towards Bournemouth or the New Forest this week, plan an alternative route and check before you set off.

⚡ Power & Infrastructure

Great Britain — Solar Eclipse to Cut Grid Solar Generation This Evening

Status: Confirmed. Today’s partial solar eclipse peaks around 7pm and will briefly knock out the last of Great Britain’s solar power generation for the day — at the same time as the heatwave is driving up demand for fans and air conditioning. Octopus Energy has asked customers to turn off unnecessary lights and fans during the eclipse to help ease pressure on the grid, according to the Guardian’s business live coverage. No outage is expected — this is a precautionary conservation request, not a warning of a power cut.

💧 Water & Utilities

England — Nine Water Companies Now Enforcing Hosepipe Bans

Status: Ongoing. Nearly three-quarters of England and the whole of Wales are now officially in drought, the Environment Agency confirmed this week, with Kent the latest county to be added on 10 August after its driest July on record. According to a tracker compiled by Water Industry Hub, nine hosepipe bans are now active: Thames Water (London, Thames Valley, Home Counties), South East Water (Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire), Anglian Water (Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Nottinghamshire, Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire), Affinity Water (Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Surrey and parts of London), Cambridge Water, Southern Water (Hampshire and the Isle of Wight), Welsh Water (west Wales), Essex & Suffolk Water (its first ban since 1997) and South West Water, which extended its ban to its entire supply area — Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset and the Isles of Scilly — on 8 August. Not every area is affected: Portsmouth Water has confirmed it has no plans for a ban despite the drought declaration covering Hampshire, and Yorkshire Water says its reserves remain healthier than this time last year.

Hampshire — Southern Water Applies for Rare Business Water Ban

Status: Developing. Southern Water has applied for a non-domestic drought order that would ban businesses in the Southampton West supply area from non-essential water use — including washing cars and filling swimming pools — citing an “exceptional” lack of rain threatening supplies for around 165,000 people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. If approved by the Environment Secretary, it would be the first order of its kind since May 2006. This doesn’t affect ordinary household use beyond the existing hosepipe ban already in place in the area.

See our Special Report “The Southern Water Drought Order: A First in 20 Years for Hampshire Businesses” first published on 12 August 2026.

East London — Burst Main Leaves Thousands Queuing for Bottled Water

Status: Confirmed. A large trunk main burst on Chigwell Road in South Woodford, cutting off water across fourteen postcodes spanning east London and Essex (E4, E10, E11, E17, E18, IG2, IG4-IG10, RM4). Thames Water has opened a bottled water station at Fairlop Waters Country Park and is delivering bottled water directly to vulnerable customers on its Priority Services Register, but residents have reported queuing for up to two hours in the ongoing heat, according to Yahoo News UK. Engineers are working to repair the main; even once supply is restored, Thames Water has warned customers in the affected area may see lower water pressure while the network recovers. It’s a reminder that mains water can fail without warning even during a drought — storing a few days’ supply at home costs nothing to set up and covers exactly this kind of incident.

🏦 Banking, Finance & Cost of Living

UK-wide — Food Prices Set to Rise into 2027 as Drought Hits Crops

Status: Confirmed. The Food and Drink Federation has warned that UK food prices will keep rising into 2027 as drought and record heat cut fruit, vegetable and grain supplies across the UK and Europe. According to Business Matters, UK-grown crops including broccoli and cherries are already in short supply, and poor grain harvests are pushing up the cost of animal feed — which the FDF says could feed through to higher meat prices as farmers reduce herd sizes. The pressure is expected to reverse some of the recent progress made in bringing food inflation down.

Global — Oil Prices Near $90 a Barrel Amid Iran Talks Impasse

Status: Ongoing. Brent crude is hovering near $90 a barrel as talks with Iran hit a new impasse, according to the Guardian’s business live coverage — the same pressures we’ve been tracking in our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker. Travel firm Tui has already flagged higher fuel costs hitting its profits, which typically feeds through to fuel and flight prices for households over time.

🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity

No significant geomagnetic activity is forecast for the UK today. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center cancelled its minor G1 geomagnetic storm watch this week, and Tuesday’s brief geomagnetic sudden impulse passed with no reported UK impact on power or communications.

🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts

No new notifiable disease outbreaks, restriction zone changes, or newly affected counties were reported today. APHA’s bluetongue monitoring continues at routine levels with no change to the current risk picture.

🚢 Supply Chain, Ports & Imports

No significant port, freight or import disruption affecting UK household food, fuel or goods availability was reported today.

🧪 Industrial & Environmental Hazards

West Sussex — Red Wildfire-Risk Warning for Arun

Status: Developing. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service has issued a red wildfire-risk warning for the Arun district ahead of Thursday’s peak heat, with the Fire Severity Index rated “exceptionally high” as temperatures are set to reach 36°C in parts of Sussex. According to Sussex Express, dry grass and vegetation mean fires can spread rapidly — residents and visitors are urged not to use disposable barbecues in parks, woodland or open countryside, and to dispose of cigarettes carefully.

Hampshire — New Forest Wildfire Fight Continues into Fourth Day

Status: Ongoing. Firefighters are continuing to tackle the wildfire burning across more than 100 hectares of heathland in the New Forest, with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service reporting visible smoke has reduced significantly since the weekend, though hotspots remain. Experts say the fight will continue for several more days as wind changes and desiccated ground keep fuelling the flames.

Suffolk — RSPB Minsmere Reopens After Dunwich Heath Fire

Status: Confirmed. RSPB Minsmere has reopened most of its nature reserve after an 11-day closure following the wildfire that tore through Dunwich Heath in late July, which grew to the size of roughly 220 football pitches at its peak. According to the East Anglian Daily Times, the fire-damaged heathland itself remains closed while crews monitor for reignition risk, but it’s a welcome piece of good news after a genuinely difficult few weeks for Suffolk’s fire services.

☑️ Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ Check whether today’s amber heat-health alert and Thursday’s amber extreme heat warning cover your area, and plan outdoor activity outside 11am-3pm
  • ☑️ Confirm whether your water company has a hosepipe ban in place before you next reach for the hose
  • ☑️ Close curtains on sun-facing windows during the day; open them again once it cools at night
  • ☑️ Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours and relatives before Thursday’s peak heat
  • ☑️ If travelling through Hampshire towards the New Forest or Bournemouth, check for the A31 closure before setting off
  • ☑️ Keep a few days of drinking water in store — mains supply isn’t guaranteed even mid-drought, as East London found out today
