Millions across England and Wales received an emergency phone alert on Friday night warning of a national wildfire risk, as homes lie destroyed in Stourbridge, Cambridgeshire and Wales and 37 fires burn nationally — disposable barbecues are now banned and the military has been deployed. Rail disruption continues into the weekend after derailments in Essex and East Sussex, and Heathrow access is restricted today after a burst pipe flooded two terminals. With drought now covering almost three-quarters of England and the ground tinder-dry, don’t light anything outdoors this weekend, and check your evacuation plan if you live near open land.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook
England & Wales — Heatwave Easing After the Hottest Day of the Year
Status: Confirmed. Thursday was the UK’s hottest day of the year and the fifth-hottest on record, with the Met Office recording 38C in Pershore, Worcestershire, and temperatures reaching 34C in London. No Met Office weather warnings are currently active, and the extreme heat is easing today, with BBC Weather forecasting highs of around 27C in London and similar levels across the South East over the weekend. The ground remains extremely dry after weeks of heat and minimal rainfall, so wildfire risk stays high even as temperatures fall — see Industrial & Environmental Hazards below.
🧑⚕️ Health & NHS Updates
England — Amber Heat-Health Alert Expires This Morning
Status: Ongoing. An amber heat-health alert issued by UKHSA remains active across the East Midlands, West Midlands, South East, South West, London and East of England until 10am today; the alert covering the rest of England expired at 9pm yesterday. UKHSA says the elevated risk applies particularly to people aged 65 and over and those with existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, with increased demand on health and care services likely while the alert remains in force.

UK — No FSA or MHRA Recalls in the Last Two Days
Status: Confirmed. No new food or medicine recalls were issued by the Food Standards Agency or MHRA in the last two days.
🔒 Cyber & National Security Alerts
UK-wide — NHS Blood and Transplant Admits Data Breach Over Unencrypted Pagers
Status: Confirmed. NHS Blood and Transplant has admitted a data breach after a BBC investigation, reported by digit.fyi, found transplant patients’ names, dates of birth, tissue-match scores and organ information were routinely sent over an unencrypted pager network. NHSBT said it was “deeply sorry”, has stopped sending patient data via pager, and has reported the breach to the Information Commissioner’s Office — but cannot confirm how many people were affected, since pager message recipients can’t be tracked. If you or a family member are on the transplant register, there’s no action needed at this stage, but it’s a reminder that hospital communications systems aren’t always as secure as patients assume.
🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
Essex & East Sussex — Rail Disruption Continues After Two Derailments in 24 Hours
Status: Ongoing. A Greater Anglia service derailed at Wickford, Essex, on Friday afternoon; nobody was injured, but Network Rail has warned “major disruption” will continue into today for routes including Southminster and Braintree. It came less than 24 hours after two passengers were seriously injured when a Southern train derailed near Lewes, East Sussex, with cancellations on that line also continuing this weekend. Network Rail says it’s investigating whether the summer’s heat played a role in either incident.
West London — Heathrow Terminals 2 and 3 Access Restricted After Pipe Leak Floods Terminal
Status: Developing. A leak in a pipe within the airport grounds has flooded the central terminal area at Heathrow, meaning passengers travelling to or from Terminals 2 and 3 cannot use the roads to reach them this morning. Heathrow says the leak has been isolated and repairs are ongoing, and is advising affected passengers to travel by rail or Tube instead. The disruption falls during the school holidays, one of the airport’s busiest periods.

England & Wales — Drought Now Covers Almost Three-Quarters of England and All of Wales

Environment Agency data shows five reservoirs are now “exceptionally low”, including Wimbleball in Somerset at less than half full. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced a new £65 million support package for farmers, including help with reservoir building and water access, saying “farmers should not carry the risk of a changing climate alone.”

West Midlands — Stourbridge Blaze Destroys 19 Homes, Fires Also Hit Pershore, Stoke-on-Trent and Birmingham
Status: Ongoing. As reported yesterday (14 August), a fast-moving grass and woodland fire tore through Stourbridge on Thursday, destroying 19 homes and damaging a further 18 in what West Midlands Fire Service’s chief fire officer called one of the most significant incidents the service has ever handled. Overnight into today, some relief came as Norton Road partially reopened, though firefighters are still damping down hotspots. Elsewhere in the region, homes were destroyed or damaged in Pershore, Worcestershire (30 evacuated, around 200 properties left without power), Stoke-on-Trent (four homes destroyed in Goldenhill, two arrested on suspicion of arson), and Birmingham (Castle Vale, Kings Norton, Druids Heath and Highters Heath all affected), with three more homes and several gardens destroyed in Willenhall.
Wiltshire, Dorset & Hampshire — Major Incident Declared as New Forest Fire Enters Its Sixth Day
Status: Ongoing. A major incident has been declared in Wiltshire and Dorset, where fires are burning across grassland including near the Westbury White Horse in Bratton. In Hampshire, firefighters are tackling a wildfire in the New Forest for a sixth day, with an area equivalent to around 230 football pitches affected, though the fire’s perimeter has now been brought under control.
Cambridgeshire — Holme Fen Nature Reserve Wildfire Continues
Status: Ongoing. A wildfire has engulfed roughly half of Holme Fen nature reserve near Peterborough, with the local MP calling for further government support as crews continue to fight the blaze.
Wales — Major Incident Near Llandovery, Arson Arrests in Rhondda
Status: Ongoing. A major incident was declared near Llandovery in Carmarthenshire after dozens of homes were evacuated and roads closed. Overnight into today, four 14-year-olds from Porth in South Wales were arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with a wildfire in the Rhondda valley and have since been bailed. Gurkha logistics teams with water tankers, along with military engineers, have been deployed to assist Welsh fire services.
England, Scotland & Wales — Disposable Barbecues Temporarily Banned, Military Deployed Nationwide
Status: Confirmed. The government has temporarily banned the sale of disposable barbecues across England, Scotland and Wales (not Northern Ireland), saying they “cannot be considered a safe product” in current conditions. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said 37 fires were burning across England and Wales, four of them major incidents, warning “Britain is a tinderbox right now” and urging people not to light any outdoor fire this weekend. A total of 1,017 wildfires have been recorded in England and Wales so far this year, matching last year’s record. Two hundred military personnel have been deployed to support fire services, with more available if needed.

England & Wales — Most Extensive Use Yet of the National Emergency Alert System
Status: Confirmed. On Friday evening, millions of phones across England and Wales sounded a siren alert warning of a “serious risk of wildfires nationally” — the most extensive activation of the UK’s Emergency Alert system to date, according to the government. The message, sent at around 7pm, urged people not to light barbecues, campfires, fireworks or garden incinerators, and to call 999 immediately if they saw a fire starting.
