📰 Quick News Brief

The government has set up a new Flood and Drought Resilience Taskforce that meets for the first time on Wednesday, as the Environment Agency warns 6.3 million homes and businesses in England are at risk of flooding and a third of people at the highest risk don’t know it. The Food Standards Agency has told anyone holding shell eggs stamped 3UA1012066 not to eat them after Salmonella was found. If you’ve never checked your own flood risk, ten minutes on GOV.UK this weekend is the single most useful thing you can do before the wetter winter forecasters expect.

England — New Flood and Drought Resilience Taskforce Meets on Wednesday
Status: Confirmed. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced a new Flood and Drought Resilience Taskforce, which will meet for the first time on Wednesday 14 October, according to a GOV.UK press release. Floods and Drought Minister Emma Hardy will chair a group of more than 50 organisations, including the Environment Agency, the Met Office, mayoral authorities, fire and rescue services, and the farming, water and insurance industries.
The first meeting will assess how prepared the country is for flooding this winter and what has been learned from the current drought, which is England’s third in five years after the driest July in almost two centuries. The government says community groups will have a direct voice in the taskforce, and that £1.4 billion is being spent on building and repairing flood defences in 2026/27.
The timing matters. The Met Office says its seasonal outlook points to a wetter than average autumn, partly driven by El Niño, and has described a “heightened potential” for wet, windy and stormy weather in the months ahead, BBC News reports. The Environment Agency says around 6.3 million homes and businesses in England are at risk of flooding, and that the odds of repeated storms, prolonged rain and saturated ground are higher than average this winter.
The bigger worry is awareness. Caroline Douglass, the Environment Agency’s director for flood and coastal risk management, said a third of people living in those 6 million at-risk properties don’t think they are at risk, according to Birmingham Live. That’s around two million households. Her advice is simple: check your flood risk on GOV.UK, sign up for free flood warnings, and if you are at risk, write a flood plan so everyone in the house knows what to do.

💰 Scams
UK-Wide — “Add Me on WhatsApp” Robocalls Hit a Five-Year High
Status: Ongoing. The Information Commissioner’s Office received more than 3,600 complaints in September about automated “add me on WhatsApp” calls, nearly three times July’s figure and the highest in five years, The Northern Echo reports. A recorded voice, usually calling from what looks like a UK mobile number, asks you to add them on WhatsApp, often dangling part-time work. The ICO believes millions of people may have been called. The rise appears to have followed WhatsApp letting users block messages from people not in their contacts, which pushes scammers to get you to add them first. If you get one of these calls, don’t add the number, and don’t reply to any job offer that arrives this way.
💧 Water & Utilities
Glasgow — Barlinnie Prison Water Supply Problems Run Into a Third Day
Status: Ongoing. Prisoners in two halls at HMP Barlinnie, Scotland’s largest jail, have been without reliable running water since Thursday night, and visitors were unable to use the toilets on Saturday, BBC News reports. The Scottish Prison Service says it is working with Scottish Water to fix the problem, which has proved harder to resolve than expected. Supply came back on Friday night only to fail again, and prisoners have been handed two-litre bottles of water, with no showers and laundry piling up. It’s a useful reminder for any household: when the taps stop, the first things to go are washing, flushing and laundry, not just drinking water, and the fix can take days rather than hours.
🔒 Cyber Security
Thames Valley — Police Warn of Rising Email and Social Media Account Hacking
Status: Confirmed. Thames Valley Police is urging people to lock down their email and social media accounts after a rise in hacking, the Oxford Mail reports. There were 44,355 victims of email and social media account hacking last year, and hijacked accounts are being used to impersonate their owners, send fraudulent messages and run scams on friends and family. The force recommends switching to passkeys where they’re offered, using a strong, unique password for every account, and checking any request for money, tickets or personal details through a different, trusted route before acting on it. Compromised accounts can be reported at reportfraud.police.uk.
🛡️ National Security
Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.
International Security News
Saudi Arabia — Riyadh Airport Evacuated After Another Suspected Attack
Status: Developing. King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was evacuated on Saturday after a loud blast, with several people reported injured, BBC News reports. It comes days after Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis claimed two attacks on the airport, and Saudi authorities say three Saudi nationals, including a pilot, were killed in attacks the day before. Saudi authorities have not commented on Saturday’s blast, but western embassies have warned their citizens away from the airport, several Gulf airlines have cancelled flights, and flight trackers show all flights to Riyadh diverted or cancelled. Anyone with travel booked to or through Saudi Arabia should check the Foreign Office travel advice and their airline before setting off. 🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
Canterbury to Whitstable — A290 Pean Hill Shut Until 22 October After Gas Leak
Status: Ongoing. The A290 Pean Hill between Canterbury and Whitstable has been closed for two weeks between Fox’s Cross Road and Pye Alley Lane while gas network SGN repairs a leak and replaces a section of main, Kent Online reports. The work is taking longer than planned and a Kent County Council notice says the road could stay shut until Thursday 22 October. Elderly residents in Blean, many without smartphones, have been left stranded at bus stops as services divert, and schoolchildren faced a two-mile walk until SGN laid on a weekday shuttle bus between Blean Common and St Edmund’s School. One gas leak, three weeks of disruption: worth keeping in mind if you rely on a single bus route to get to the shops or the GP.
Prestwich — Burst Sewer Keeps Heywood Road Closed for Weeks More
Status: Ongoing. Part of Heywood Road in Prestwich has been shut since a sinkhole opened last month, caused by a burst sewer pipe, and the closure has now been extended to the Heys Road roundabout for up to two more weeks, the Manchester Evening News reports. United Utilities says it is replacing further sections of pipe and lining them to stop it happening again. Ageing pipes under the road can fail with no warning, and the repairs rarely take days.
🚨 Recalls
Food
UK-Wide — Ukrainian Shell Eggs Stamped 3UA1012066 Recalled Over Salmonella
Status: Confirmed. The Food Standards Agency has issued a Food Alert for Action after Salmonella was found in shell eggs from Yasensvit Ltd in Ukraine. Any egg stamped with the code 3UA1012066 should not be eaten, and the FSA says other eggs carrying the same stamp may also be affected. The code is printed on the egg shell itself, so check any loose eggs or eggs bought from a market or smaller shop, not just the box. If you have any, don’t eat them; return them to where you bought them or throw them away, and wash your hands and any surfaces they touched.
🦠 Animal & Agricultural Disease Alerts
Great Britain — Bluetongue Passes 3,200 Cases, Isle of Wight and Wiltshire Among Latest
Status: Confirmed. As reported yesterday (10 October), bluetongue had reached 3,164 cases. The latest APHA update puts the 2026 to 2027 season at 3,235 confirmed premises: 2,709 in England, 478 in Wales, 48 in Scotland and none in Northern Ireland. England confirmed 64 new cases on 9 October across Cornwall, Cumbria, Derbyshire, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, the Isle of Wight, Lancashire, North Yorkshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Worcestershire, in both sheep and cattle. Keepers should watch for fever, mouth sores and lameness, talk to their vet about vaccination, and report any suspicion straight away.
🌞 Space Weather & Geomagnetic Activity
UK-Wide — Northern Lights Seen as Far South as Devon, Hampshire and Kent
Status: Confirmed. Strong geomagnetic activity brought the Northern Lights to skies across the whole of the UK on Friday and Saturday nights, with sightings as far south as Devon, Hampshire and Kent, BBC News reports. Activity reached 600 nanotesla on Saturday evening, three times the level normally needed to see the aurora in the north of the UK, after coronal mass ejections from the Sun late last week. Displays were reported from Kendal, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, Winterton-on-Sea, Herne Bay and Holmwood in Surrey. The Met Office says sightings could continue on clear nights until Tuesday. No disruption to the power grid or GPS has been reported, but storms of this strength are the same solar activity that can affect satellites and power networks when they grow larger.

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day
Flood plans sound like something for people living next to a river, but the Environment Agency says a third of those most at risk don’t think they are. Take ten minutes this weekend: put your postcode into the GOV.UK flood risk checker, sign up for warnings if it shows any risk, and make a list of the things you’d carry upstairs first, such as medication, documents, chargers and the pet carrier. Keep that list with your house insurance details, so if a warning comes through at 2am you aren’t trying to think straight in the dark.
