Daily UK Prepper News — 18 October 2026

📰 Quick News Brief

Keith The Prepper reporting the daily news

Heating oil has risen by up to 82% since the start of the Iran war, and households in Devon and Cornwall say they are holding off filling their tanks for winter. In Greater Manchester, no trams will run to Altrincham, Eccles or Trafford Park for two weeks from Monday. With forecasters pointing to a colder winter ahead, now is the time to check your heating fuel, alarms and travel plans.

🔝 Leading Story

Devon and Cornwall — Heating Oil Up by as Much as 82% as Rural Homes Hold Off Buying

Status: Ongoing. Households in the South West have told the BBC they are struggling to heat their homes after heating oil prices climbed since the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran. Energy consumers minister Polly Billington said heating fuel costs have risen by up to 82%, and that rural communities with “so many people off grid” are among the most exposed. One Dunsford, Devon, resident said 500 litres cost about £340 this time last year and just over £600 now. A 76-year-old from Porkellis, Cornwall, said she will put the heating on less, and a St Agnes resident who saves £30 a month towards oil said she can no longer afford to fill her tank. Earlier this month the government promised tighter rules for the sector, more competition, clearer compensation when things go wrong and a review of minimum order levels. A £53m support package for low-income households on heating oil was announced in March. If you’re on oil, check your tank level now rather than waiting until it’s nearly empty, and plan a way to keep one room warm if you have to make a delivery last. We’re tracking the conflict’s knock-on costs in our Middle East Conflict: UK Household Impact tracker.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook

UK-Wide — Met Office Chief Warns of a Possible Colder, Drier Winter

Status: Monitoring. The Met Office’s chief meteorologist Ian Lisk has said “we don’t get normal weather any more”, adding that a colder and drier winter is being looked at, which would be bad news because “we need a lot of rain to make up for the existing deficit”, Surrey Live reports. Oxford climate researcher Chloe Brimicombe said this year’s El Niño looks set to bring a stormy autumn followed by a cold, calm winter, though the Met Office stresses El Niño is only one of several drivers. In the short term, rural frost is likely overnight this weekend, with rain or showers for parts of England and Wales on Monday and Tuesday, mainly in the south. With colder weather in mind, British Gas is advising log burner users to keep a supply of wood stored indoors in case the outdoor pile becomes hard to reach, and to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, the Birmingham Mail reports. See our Special Report “El Nino UK Winter 2026: The Record Storm Season” first published on 5 September 2026.

💰 Scams

UK-Wide — NatWest Warns of Fake “Update Your Account” Emails

Status: Confirmed. NatWest customers are being warned about phishing emails that copy the bank’s branding and ask people to review and update their account information through a link, the Birmingham Mail reports. The link leads to a fake website built to steal personal details. NatWest says genuine emails will include personal details such as your name and postcode, so be wary of generic messages. Don’t click links or open attachments in unexpected emails, and forward suspicious ones claiming to be from NatWest to [email protected].

🌳 Environmental Hazards

Kildale, North Yorkshire — Unattended Campfire Spreads Into Woodland

Status: Confirmed. Firefighters from Stokesley and Leyburn were called to Gribdale Gate, near Kildale, at about 10.40am on Saturday after an unattended campfire spread into surrounding vegetation, Hambleton Today reports. The fire covered an area of about eight metres by four metres, and crews used an all-terrain Argocat to reach it. It was caught early, but with much of England still in drought, ground cover is drier than usual for October. Never leave a campfire or disposable BBQ unattended, and put it out fully with water before you leave. See our Special Report “UK Wildfire Risk” first published on 30 June 2026.

Corby, Northamptonshire — Volunteers Find Metals at 52 Freshwater Sites

Status: Developing. Charity Earthwatch Europe says trained citizen scientists found potentially harmful levels of metal or metalloid at 52 freshwater sites across Corby, including cadmium in six samples taken in July, the BBC reports. The town is still living with the toxic waste scandal from the demolition of its steelworks in the 1980s. The charity says the results show where further investigation and clean-up may be needed. The Environment Agency welcomed the work but said some metals occur naturally and its own evidence does not show “widespread or significant harm”. Until more is known, keep children and dogs out of local streams and ponds, and wash hands after contact with the water.

💧 Water & Utilities

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire — Same Water Main Bursts Twice in Two Months

Status: Confirmed. A water main has burst on Weasenham Lane in Wisbech, leaving standing water on the road, Cambridgeshire Live reports. It is the second burst at the same spot in two months, after it last burst and closed the road on 4 August. Anglian Water and police were at the scene on Saturday morning, and police asked drivers to take care. Repeat failures on the same pipe are a reminder that mains supply can drop out at short notice, so keep a few days of drinking water stored at home.

Herne Hill, South London — Sewer Stench Blamed on Dry Summer

Status: Ongoing. An acrid smell from Thames Water sewers in Herne Hill has gone on for months and is thought to be caused by untreated sewage stuck in the drains after the summer’s lack of rain, the Guardian reports. A local bike shop has had to keep some customers out and its mechanics have been working on the pavement, and there is no date for fixing the problem. Drought doesn’t only affect the taps: low flows can leave waste sitting in the sewers. If you notice a persistent sewage smell near your home, report it to your water company so it is logged.

🔒 Cyber Security

UK-Wide — Fake Job Adverts Used to Steal Work Logins

Status: Confirmed. Scammers are posting fake job adverts that impersonate brands such as Disney and Coca-Cola, using more than 800 fake websites to harvest passwords and workplace logins, the Birmingham Mail reports. Fake recruiters, sometimes using real employees’ names and photos, send candidates to pages that copy interview booking tools like Calendly and show convincing but fake Google or Facebook login windows. The campaign is aimed at people in marketing and communications, whose accounts can open up company systems and advertising budgets. If you’re job hunting, go to the company’s own careers page rather than following a link, and never enter a login on a page you reached from a recruiter’s message.

🛡️ National Security

Current threat level: 4 (Severe – an attack is highly likely), according to MI5.

UK Security News

UK-Wide — Former National Security Adviser Warns Banking, Energy and Water Could Be Targeted

Status: Developing. Lord Ricketts, a former national security adviser and former head of the Foreign Office, has said ministers need to be honest with the public about the threat from Russia, warning that banking systems, energy and water supplies could be targeted by Kremlin cyberattacks, the Guardian reports. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, he said Russia’s “hybrid” attacks are “getting more reckless, more dangerous” and called for more investment in resilience for key sectors. His comments follow warnings this week from MI5 director general Sir Ken McCallum and the head of the Army, General Sir Roly Walker. The practical point for households: if banking, power or water were disrupted, a little cash at home, stored water and a way to charge a phone would cover the first few days. See our Special Report “Is Russia a Threat to the UK?” first published on 26 July 2026.

🚗 Transport & Travel Notes

Status: Confirmed. From Monday 19 October until Sunday 1 November, no trams will run to Altrincham, Eccles or Trafford Park while around 4km of track is replaced between Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield, the Bolton News reports. East Didsbury and Manchester Airport services will terminate at Firswood, and Rochdale line services will run to Exchange Square. The work is part of a £150m programme on one of the busiest parts of the network. If you commute on these lines, check Transport for Greater Manchester’s journey planner before Monday and allow extra time.

🧑‍⚕️ Health & NHS Updates

England — Health Secretary Warns of a “More Challenging” NHS Winter After Record Summer

Status: Developing. Health Secretary Yvette Cooper has warned the NHS faces a more challenging winter than normal after multiple heatwaves gave it its busiest summer on record in England, the BBC reports. Almost 7.3 million people attended A&E in England between June and August, the highest figure ever for a summer. She announced £140m for 14 schemes across England, including new urgent care centres, ambulance fleets and emergency department upgrades. Cooper has also asked NHS England to draw up urgent plans to end “corridor care” for children and to set new standards for how children are treated in A&E. In September, 50,582 people waited more than 12 hours in A&E between a decision to admit them and actually being admitted, up from 44,951 in August. NHS medical director Prof Frankie Swords said there are already “ominous” signs of winter pressure, with more patients than usual arriving with flu and other respiratory viruses. If you’re eligible for a flu vaccine, book it now, and keep a few days of any regular medication in hand so a busy winter doesn’t leave you short.

🚢 Supply Chain

England — Drought Shrinks Pumpkin Crops and Leaves Livestock Farmers Short of Winter Feed

Status: Confirmed. The summer drought has hit farm output in two ways this autumn. Pumpkin growers report much smaller crops, with Ruffins Farm in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, growing about 50 pumpkins this year instead of around 10,000, RTÉ reports. The farm kept its water for its 500 breeding ewes rather than irrigating, and said the grass for its sheep didn’t grow either. Writing in the East Anglian Daily Times, the Addington Fund farming charity said reduced grass growth and poorer forage yields have forced many livestock farmers to start feeding winter stocks early, and it has increased its hardship and forage aid grants. Early feeding now means tighter supplies and higher costs for meat and dairy producers later in the winter.

🏭 Industrial Hazards

Mossley Hill, Liverpool — Residents Told to Keep Windows Shut During Disused Campus Fire

Status: Confirmed. Eight fire engines and an aerial appliance were sent to a fire in the roof of an unoccupied student accommodation building, about 100 metres by 20 metres, at the disused Liverpool John Moores University IM Marsh campus on Barkhill Road on Saturday afternoon, the Liverpool Echo reports. Police put cordons on Barkhill Road and North Sudley Road, and people living nearby were told to keep doors and windows closed. The fire service advised anyone with a medical condition to keep their treatment close and call NHS 111 if they felt unwell from the smoke.

Cambridgeshire — Council Warns of “Extreme Risk” From Modified E-Bike Batteries

Status: Confirmed. Cambridgeshire County Council has backed a motion calling for better awareness of the dangers of illegally modified e-bikes and e-scooters, after an inquest heard that the failure of a charging battery pack was the “most probable” cause of a 2023 fire in Sackville Close, Cambridge, that killed a mother and her two young children, Cambridgeshire Live reports. A councillor said the battery had been replaced and wired in a way that made it dangerous, and that powerful batteries charged in homes overnight are “an extreme risk”. Only use the manufacturer’s battery and charger, don’t charge overnight or while you’re out, and keep charging away from escape routes such as hallways.

💷 Cost of Living

UK-Wide — Diesel Above £2 a Litre as the AA Shares Fuel-Saving Tips

Status: Ongoing. Diesel is averaging over £2 a litre and petrol more than 174p, driven by disruption in the Middle East, the Birmingham Mail reports. The AA says its tips could cut fuel costs by up to 20%. Driving at 70mph uses about 9% more fuel than at 60mph and 15% more than at 50mph. Accelerating gently, checking tyre pressures, taking off unused roof racks and sharing commutes all help. With prices this high, it’s also worth keeping your tank above a quarter full so a sudden price jump or supply scare doesn’t catch you short.

Quick Risk Summary — 48-Hour Checklist

  • ☑️ If you heat with oil, check your tank level today and get quotes from more than one supplier before ordering
  • ☑️ Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, especially if you use a log burner or other fuel-burning heater
  • ☑️ Keep a few days’ supply of dry logs or other heating fuel stored indoors or under cover
  • ☑️ Greater Manchester tram users: check your Metrolink route before Monday 19 October
  • ☑️ Don’t click links in emails asking you to “update” bank details; forward NatWest lookalikes to [email protected]
  • ☑️ Charge e-bike and e-scooter batteries only with the original charger, never overnight or while you’re out

UK Prepper Hub Tip of the Day

If heating oil, gas or electricity is costing more this winter, heat the room you use rather than the whole house. Pick one room, close the door, put a rolled-up towel along the gap at the bottom and draw the curtains as soon as it gets dark. Wear layers and a hat indoors, and keep a hot water bottle or a flask of hot drink handy in the evenings. It makes each litre of oil or unit of energy go further, and it’s exactly the routine you’d want ready if the heating ever failed altogether.
