An amber heat-health alert covers every region of England today, with the Met Office’s own amber warning in force until midnight and London forecast to reach 36°C — expect hospitals, ambulance crews and vulnerable people to feel the strain. Wildfire crews remain stretched into a fifth day at both the New Forest and Cambridgeshire’s Holme Fen, with Hampshire’s A31 shut until at least Friday, while a house fire in Newbridge, Caerphilly has left five families needing new homes. Water suppliers across the east of England are asking customers to cut back further as the driest July on record bites.

🌦️ Weather Warnings & Outlook
UK-wide — Amber Extreme Heat Warning
Status: Confirmed. The Met Office has an amber extreme heat warning in force from 09:00 to 23:59 today, with London forecast to hit 36°C and much of England and Wales in the low-to-mid 30s. As reported yesterday (12 August), this is the fifth heatwave of the summer — today is the day the amber warning actually takes effect. The Met Office warns some heat-sensitive equipment and power supplies could fail, water safety incidents are more likely at open water, and road, rail and air travel may see delays.
Outlook — Cooler, Wetter Weekend Ahead
Status: Developing. BBC Weather‘s UK forecast shows temperatures easing from Friday (33°C) through the weekend (26°C Saturday, 25°C Sunday), with rain arriving by Monday — the first meaningful relief for the drought-hit south in weeks.
🧑⚕️ Health & NHS Updates
England — Amber Heat-Health Alert
Status: Confirmed. UKHSA has an amber heat-health alert in place across every region of England, meaning adverse health effects are likely even for people outside the usual high-risk groups.
London — Ambulance Service Busier Than Pandemic Peak
Status: Confirmed. BBC London reports the London Ambulance Service took more than 53,000 emergency calls during June’s heatwave alone, deploying 600 extra crews for cardiac arrests and breathing difficulties — busier than at the height of the Covid pandemic. With today’s amber alert live, the service is bracing for another surge.

Nottingham — Hospitals Struggling to Keep Wards and Clinics Cool
Status: Ongoing. BBC News reports Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has had to cancel outpatient clinics when air conditioning couldn’t cope, and the Royal College of Nursing says members have been “collapsing on shift” in wards it describes as “not fit for humans” in this heat.

UK-wide — Criminal Records Body Reprimanded Over Data Breach
Status: Confirmed. The Register reports ACRO, the body that processes police certificates and criminal record checks, ran an unpatched content management system for over three years, letting attackers sit undetected inside its systems for seven months. ACRO has notified 84,048 people that their names, dates of birth, addresses and National Insurance numbers — and in some cases passport, driving licence and bank details — may have been exposed. If you’ve applied for a police certificate or a DBS-linked check through ACRO in recent years, keep an eye on your bank statements and credit file for anything unfamiliar.
Global — Active Exploitation of Microsoft SharePoint Flaw
Status: Developing. BleepingComputer reports hackers are already exploiting a newly published proof-of-concept exploit for a critical SharePoint vulnerability. Any UK business or household running an on-premises SharePoint server should apply Microsoft’s patch without delay.
🚗 Transport & Travel Notes
Hampshire — A31 Shut Until at Least Friday as New Forest Wildfire Burns On
Status: Ongoing. The New Forest wildfire is into its fifth day, and National Highways says repair crews cannot safely access the A31 near Ringwood while smoke, heat and ash keep the fire moving — the road isn’t expected to reopen “until Friday at the earliest”. Plan an alternative route if you’re travelling through Hampshire today.
⚡ Power & Infrastructure
No significant new infrastructure disruption reported today — National Grid ESO’s live status shows no active margin notices or capacity alerts despite the heat.
💧 Water & Utilities
East of England — Anglian Water Warns of “Challenging” Supply Situation
Status: Ongoing. BBC News reports Anglian Water, which supplies 7 million customers from Grimsby and Lincolnshire down to Southend-on-Sea in Essex, and from Northampton and Milton Keynes across to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth, is asking households to cut water use to “only essential tasks” after the driest July on record. Rivers used for drinking water in Norfolk, including the River Wensum, are running exceptionally low, and a hosepipe ban is already in force across the region.
England — Ofwat Approves Further Bill Rises to Fund Infrastructure
Status: Confirmed. The Guardian reports Ofwat has approved an extra £3.4bn in spending by five English water companies, funded through higher bills. Southern Water customers face the steepest rise — an average of £43 in 2027/28, then a further £37 in 2029/30 — to pay for infrastructure upgrades and efforts to remove “forever chemicals” from supplies.

If you’re under a hosepipe ban, your fruit and veg don’t have to suffer. Watering food crops by hand with a watering can — filled from a water butt or leftover washing-up water — is exempt from every hosepipe ban in the country. It’s slower than a hose, but it’s completely legal, and it’s actually the better way to water a productive vegetable patch anyway, since it goes straight to the roots instead of the leaves.
